Poll question: Generally female dogs and male cats make the better companions
Key word here is generally. I have had the pleasure of spending long periods of my life with lots of dogs and cats and can think of exceptions to the above statement in some of them. But as things go do you thing that generally female dogs and male cats do make the better companions? Or not? And don't forget generally?

1. I have both male and female cats and
the boys are all bragsters and brats. They're always in the middle of a pissing contest (figuratively!) and they really are too indolent to be much good at anything else. My girls, on the other hand, have historically been the sweethearts of my life. The only male I had that was worth his salt was Dax, and I lost him in February, 2003. He was a "protector" and watched over me every night as I slept, and wouldn't tolerate any crap from the other males as the alpha.

As far as dogs, I have known both male and female, and the male ones in my life have also had the "protector" gene and been always there when you need them. Many of the females I've known have been primadonnas.

I also like hearing about other peoples. Puts a smile on my face. And that is a good thing.

2. I have two
female dogs, who are wonderful companions...though a trifle demanding (as all females are). Three cats, two are female and one is male. I have to admit the male is the least high maintenance of the crew...a real sweetheart, but he also is not affectionate. The females are a pain in the ass a lot of the time, but very loving and cuddly. (Sorry, for you guys out there...probably cuddly is not something you really think about!):P

4. I have a male dog and 2 female cats
that get along disgustingly well. But the male cats I've had over the years all hated dogs. Maybe I just pick bad cats?

5. I sure agree about male cats!
My daughter-in-law told me this and it took me awhile to agree. I have 2 male (speutered) cats who are honeys. I can't sit down without one of them getting in my lap. My female (speuteres) cat is trying to murder me one scratch and bite at a time. She picks fights with the boys, if they are eating she claws them on the head, if they are sleeping she pounces on them, if I am asleep she hisses til I wake up.
But oddly, I love her just as much as I love the boys!

Sorry about the made up word but I can never remember which is for males and which is for females.

6. I can only speak about cats, but
most of the males I've known over the years (and there have been many!) are lovey and friendly, but I've had very intense relationships with some of the females. My 13-year-old girl is very intelligent and we have such a strong bond. We communicate a lot through eye contact; it's hard to explain unless you've experienced such a connection.

I've also got two boys. They're both big on affection, but sometimes they chase my poor girl, to the point where she doesn't want to go downstairs to use the litterbox for fear that she'll be ambushed by the bully boys. I have to remember to escort her as much as possible.

7. Generally speaking, yes,
but I love Dobermans and oddly enough the females are more challenging than the males. They will test you at every turn.

8. Female cats rule
though we did have a male orange tabby who was so affectionate we called him our "sponge".

Besides, 99.99% of calicos are female, and without calicos, what would keep Asscroft from mounting a comeback?

10. I have a BIG 11 year old male grey tabby. He has never sprayed once
Edited on Sat Oct-15-05 11:36 PM by NNN0LHI
In the house anyway. He does spray his property line outside though when he is patrolling for stray cats to evict. Trees, fences, and such. He has never even had a litter box and never has had an accident in the house. He goes out to the farm field right behind my house for that. He goes to the door like the dogs when he has to go.

He is the first one into the bed at seven at night...beats the two dogs handily...and the last one out of it in the morning at six. I have had other males that did spray though. This is the best cat male or female that I have ever owned by far.

He is the most gentle cat I have ever owned too. He has never once even accidentally scratched anyone since we got him. He doesn't just put up with the dogs either. He genuinely like them. Goes out of his way to be near them. And they like him. The three of them are inseparable.
