4. I've never liked it either
It's silly and rather childish, like "wifey." :puke:

I'm also not a fan of "spouse," as it sounds like some sort of gardening implement. Or perhaps a plumber's tool.

"Ralph, you seen the 9/16" spouse? I need it to degauze this curmudgeon widget."

17. I do too - vehemently
It's so white, bourgeois, and mindlessly suburban. It reeks of Tupperware parties and soccer mom brain death.

"Hubby will beat me if I don't have a beer ready for him when he gets home!"

It has this vague feel of subservience, which is disturbing when the marriage is actually equal. If nothing else, it's too self-consciously cutesy for its own good.

:puke:

35. Gosh, Woof, I've never been a soccer mom!
And I hate Tupperware parties.

Neither am I subservient. I've been married for 29 years and I'm just not the kind of person who would allow myself to stay in a relationship for that long unless it was equal.

It's an affectionate term and not meant to offend anyone. Sorry you're offended. I don't like the puke smiley. :(

36. I am not offended, just dismissive
Edited on Tue Oct-11-05 11:54 AM by ZombyWoof
And I said it SOUNDS vaguely subservient, even in equal relationships. PLEASE read what I wrote, word for word. The other day in a pet peeve thread, someone mentioned that cherry-picking what one says in a post, and replying only to that, is their peeve, and I agreed.

I have very strong feelings about language and its usage. "Hubby" just has negative bourgeois connotations with me, but that doesn't mean each and every one of you who uses it needs to be defensive, or that it applies to you, to a person.

As for the argument offered above that "it is easier to write", that is a very weak defense, indeed. ifweawlwanted2typthings2maykthemeezier2writRsentinceswudluklykthis

That's a slippery slope argument waiting to happen.

I am pretty sure the extra effort to type 3 extra letters will not make one's fingers fall off, but I could be wrong. ;-)

38. OK, but I did read it.
What you said was,

"It has this vague feel of subservience, which is disturbing when the marriage is actually equal." I guess I interpreted it differently from what you meant. I didn't think I was cherry-picking, just trying to say that it meant something different to me.

41. I said 'actually equal'
Which means that the term is even worse when the marriage is NOT subservient or unequal, because the term is generally associated with something emanating from the mouth of "the little woman".

In other words, it is jarring and rather off-key when someone like you uses it, versus Mrs. Cleaver for example. :-)

I am admittedly a hardass about language. "Hubby" is just too fucking cutesy for my ears.

In fairness, any man who says "wifey" should be shot on sight.

And I agree with you about "wifey". The men I used to work with said "the wife" a lot, which I found demeaning. It's interesting how words are interpreted by different people.

Thanks for not blowing me off, Woof! :hi:

29. Ick.
I've read some divorce-related message boards, and some of the phrasing is horrible there:

"Oh no! Hubby punched me in the eye and then left! Will I ever see Hubby again?!!?"

(Not even "my hubby," just "Hubby.")

Isn't it supposed to be a term of endearment?

40. Wow, what an odd thing to get uptight about
No, I'm not going to spell out the word "husband" because this is the internet and abbreviations are pretty standard here. Personally, I find "LOL" rather annoying but I use it and I don't protest when others use it - it's an abbreviation.

I use the word "hubby" because a) it's shorter and b) it's a quick and easy way of referring to the person I'm with who is NOT my husband, by the way. I don't particularly care for "significant other" or "SO" which sounds very generic and devoid of any kind of special feeling, "boyfriend" sounds absurd when you're 44 years old - "hubby" is my word of choice.
