Why are some big movies not being released on DVD?
Edited on Thu Jul-24-03 02:44 PM by TXlib
Star Wars IV, V, VI
Schindler's List
etc

There are a number of great movies that would probably clean up if re-released on DVD. So what are the studios waiting for?

2. Animal House was out, but it's not available anymore.
Also, Raiders of the Lost Ark.

It's not a movie, but I've been waiting for Seinfeld to be released, too.

...in what they're calling a "Double-Secret Probation Edition." Due out in August.

3. My prediction:
George Lucas is waiting to release the original trilogy DVD's in 2007, which will be the 30th anniversary of Star Wars.
Since Episode III comes out in 2005, with the DVD to follow, it makes sense to have something big to offer for the 30th, and AFTER the prequel trilogy is finished.

This is the most logical scenario from a marketing perspective.
It allows LucasFilm to go overboard pushing the DVD set in 2007.

And yes, I've heard all about the "originals" NOT being released to DVD but that the Special Editions and/or the possible "ULTIMATE Editions" will be.

My response to that is, wait and see.
You may be surprised at what we get.

8. By then, blue laser DVDs should be common.
Blue laser DVDs will allow multiple versions of the same movie on a single sided/dual layer DVD. This will mean that we could get the original versions of IV, V and VI on single DVDs (with the enhanced picture and sound of the special editions of course), plus have the option of watching the directors cut or special edition by selecting to do so in the DVD menu.

Blue laser DVDs will not only hold much more, but they'll have higher bandwidth as well allowing for up to 1080 lines of resolution compared to 480 coming out of today's progressive scan players. I can't wait for the Star Wars DVDs to come out, I've been waiting for them for eons now, but I have a feeling it will be worth it.

By the way, if you really need to see Star Wars in digital picture and sound, here's what to do. Go on ebay and pick up a cheap laserdisc player that has dolby digital capability. Pick up a converter so that the player can output a dolby digital stream, and pick up a dolby digital receiver if you don't already have one. Then just pick up the THX versions of the trilogy on Laserdisc and you are set. You can now listen to Star Wars in glorious dolby digital sound.

10. A great place for these questions is...
http://www.hometheaterforum.com/

Registration is free, but issues of politics, personal attacks and religion are strictly forbidden. They will ban you in a heartbeat.

But, about 25-30,000 members know what they're talking about.

SW: Last I heard, somewhere around 2006-7. More special effects upgrades are in store for the original trilogy.

Schindler: Who knows, but there are rumors that Universal and Spielberg are working on it, and this Nov, will be the 10th Anniversary. But, would Spielberg want to compete one of his movies with...

Indiana Jones...Nov 4th! You can pre-order it here...

And just in case you were wondering, but nobody asked yet...on Oct 7, you'll hate the sound "MUSTAFA" once again...

12. Regarding Star Wars
From what I understand Lucas is having negotiation problems with the folks at THX, and therefore is unable to put the original trilogy on DVD. Haven't heard anything on changes...

13. Star Wars
simple, easy answer. Lucas has said that he wants to do it right. and that he doesn't have enough time to focus on them right now. So expet them in 2007 or so.

16. Lame excuse
What, he wants to make a "special special edition" out of them?!

He's released eps 4-6, even the "special editions" on LaserDisc format (1998) in THX quality and all that.

What involvement does he want to have in it? Judging by the story quality of eps 1 and 2, he's not focusing enough on the prequel trilogy... And if the best SW ep is ep 5 (because Lucas' involvement in it was minimal, oh how odd...), I don't expect ep 3 to be anything even remotely spectacular either...

The films are there; he's already meddled with them once already, all he needs to do is to tell the tech people "prep it and release it". Big deal.

Or, maybe ep 3 will be such a flop that people won't care for SW and won't buy eps 4-6.

Of course, we have the flip side which is Paramount creating new box sets of all 10 movies every time the latest Kirk movie gets a 'special edition' treatment... As it currently stands, 1-4 are special editions whereas 5-10 are substandard releases and they're all boxed in one, what a waste... :eyes:
