I just can't quit listening to this: The Billie Holiday Collection, Volume 1, with "Easy to Love" and "A Fine Romance"...the early recordings with Teddy Wilson. She's so beautful, upbeat and witty..."Pennies From Heaven" has such a sweet, wistful tone to it.

(Thanks for this idea Patton and R.K.Z. - love the book graphic!)

2. Well.....as long as no one laughs
I bought the CD version of the soundtrack to the 1973 movie, Lost Horizon and have been listening to that over and over again, especially the main theme song. Just before that one, it was the soundtrack to the 1973 version of Willy Wonka.

I have this thing for soundtracks. Maybe because I worked for a while at Universal Studios in the Music Business Affairs area. But soundtracks are always fun for me.

15. I love that Ballet!
I saw it perfomed by the Stutgart Ballet back in the late 60"s. Since I had worn out the record (yes record), I knew all the music by heart and that is what made it truly great>

10. "La mort du cerf" - vocals and bugles only...
I usually listen to everything from opera to Irish folk songs and even some Heavy Metal; sometimes I get stuck with something for awhile. "La mort du cerf" - the Death of the Stag - has completely captured me... I think (but do not know) it's a French folk song. French hunting horn players have played it on stage (at an event where there were only bugles) and I've fallen for it so much that my SO has forbidden me to play it because I get the blues every time big time...

I could listen to the Alkaline Trio for the rest of my life. Since you like the Trio, I heartilly recommend the self-titled compilation from a band called "Slapstick". It will make you weep with joy, I promise. It's also got a member from the Trio in it! I believe it's Dan.

John Prine the album Fair & Square

Have you ever noticed
When you're feeling really good
There's always a pigeon
That'll come shit on your hood
Some humans ain't Human

Or you're feeling your freedom
And the world's off your back
Some cowboy from Texas
Starts his own war in Iraq

Some humans ain't human
Some people ain't kind
They lie through their teeth
With their head up their behind
You open up their hearts
And here's what you'll find
Some humans ain't human
Some people ain't kind

Mmmm Mmmm
Mmmm Mmmm
Mmmm Mmmm

25. Hourglass (for Diana)
From Current 93's "Earth Covers Earth". I've been listening obsessively. (And, no, the spelling is not wrong).

My life is measur'd by this glasse, this glasse
By all those little Sands that thorough passe
See how they presse, see how they strive, which shall
With greatest speed and greatest quicknesse fall
See how they raise a little Mount, and then
With their owne weight doe levell it agen
But when th'have all got threw, they give o're
Their nimble sliding downe, and move no more
Just such is man whose houres still forward run
Being almost finisht ere they are begun;
So perfect nothings, such light blasts are we
That ere w'are ought at all, we cease to be
Do what we will, our hasty minutes fly
And while we sleep, what do we else but die?
How transient are our Joyes, how short their day!
They creepe on towards us, but flie away
How stinging are our sorrows! where they gaine
But the least footing, there they will remaine
How groundlesse are our hopes, how they deceive
Our childish thoughts, and onely sorrow leave!
How reall are our feares! they blast us still
Stil rend us, still with gnawing passions fill;
How senselesse are our wishes, yet how great!
With what toile we pursue them, with what sweat!
Yet most times for our hurts, so small we see
Like Children crying for some Mercurie
This gapes for Marriage, yet his fickle head
Knows not what cares waite on a Marriage bed
This vowes Virginity, yet knowes not what
Lonenesse, griefe, discontent, attends that state
Desires of wealth anothers wishes hold'
And yet how many have been choak'd with Gold?
This onely hunts for honour, yet who shall
Ascend the higher, shall more wretched fall
This thirsts for knowledge, yet how is it bought?
With many a sleeplesse night and racking thought
This needs will travell, yet how dangers lay
Most secret Ambuscado's in the way!
These triumph in their Beauty, though it shall
Like a pluck't Rose or fading Lillie fall
Another boasts strong armes, alas Giants have
By silly Dwarfes been drag'd unto their grave
These ruffle in rich silke, though ne're so gay
A well plum'd Peacock is more gay than they
Poore man, what art! a Tennis ball of Errour
A ship of Glasse, toss'd in a Sea of terrour
Issuing in blood and sorrow from the wombe
Crauling in tears and mourning to the tombe
How slippery are thy paths, how sure thy fall
How art thou Nothing when th'art most of all!

(Lyrics by John Hall 1627-1656)

Khash.
(AVH should recognize this, I only made her listen to it over and over)

30. Liz Phair - Somebody's Miracle
Edited on Sat Oct-08-05 10:40 PM by mvd
I'm saving this one along with a few others for end-of-year Christmas gifts, but I've heard a lot of it on the full album listening party. To me, it's like a more pop, but more varied whitechocolatespaceegg. I love it! Better than the self-titled, which had some great songs ("Red Light Fever," "It's Sweet," "Rock Me," "Little Digger," "My Bionic Eyes,") but also had about 4 clunkers. And the lyrics weren't as good as I expected from Liz. I'd even call Somebody's Miracle tied for her best.

Other music I've listened to lately:

Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine (again, from full album listening party)- a couple more songs have grown on me, but I think too many songs have a sterility that doesn't suit her quirky style and compelling voice. A B-. I bought a few songs on iTunes since there are quite a few albums above this one in purchasing importance.)

Stuff from:

Julie Gribble - I'll definitely get the CD

Brandi Carlile - Another great lesser-known artist I'll get the CD from

Franz Ferdinand - new CD sounds worth purchasing; will try to hear more since wasn't a fan of self-titled CD

t.A.T.u. - I just don't like t.A.T.u. New stuff could be even worse.

Hope 7 - self-titled (power pop gem from my collection)
