Just show up and wait until the LAST possible minute to talk to scalpers. They know their inventory is worthless once the show is over, and are usually a lot more willing to cut you a break and sell closer to the face value.
A year or so ago, I saw Lewis Black was coming to town and POUNCED on Ticketmaster the first day, managed to score seats in the folding chairs in the orchestra pit. This was WEEKS before the show... so we went, found our seats and everything was great. The seats next to me remained empty until about five minutes before curtain, when a local couple wandered in and sat down. They'd seen something on TV about 20 minutes earlier and just turned up and the scalpers practically GAVE them the seats. I think they actually paid less than I did because they avoided the TicketBastard charges!!
Not saying that's always going to happen, but it might. Also, check the box office a few days before the show... sometimes primo seats are "blocked" for VIPs who might claim them, and at some point, the venue will re-release the unclaimed seats into the wild. This is especially true if the venue is "old school" with a lot of classical concerts or broadway stuff -- generally these seats are held for big patrons, but they usually don't go for rock shows or comedians.
Or you could always just walk in backwards like you're walking out. ;)
On edit... saw Jon Stewart a couple years ago, and he was insanely funny, even though I think about 80 percent of what he was doing was off-the-cuff rambling. Find a way to get in...
