Who is the greatest rock guitarist of all time??
Edited on Fri Oct-07-05 03:39 PM by SmileyBoy
Just rock and roll in general, any sub-genre.

Too many choices for a poll (there's at least 20 people who could have a say in #1), so I'll give my choice:

ZAKK WYLDE

Honourable Mention goes to:

Jimmy Page
Mark Knopfler
Pete Townshend
Daron Malakian

Who do you think??

Some brilliant stuff, in my opinon. Much better than the Peppers (and I love the Peppers).

15. I really recommend his albums "Inside of Emptiness" and...
"Shadows Collide With People"

So good.

And then there's the work he's done with The Mars Volta. Only a few tracks, but some really great guitar work.

10. Eddie Hazel
Edited on Fri Oct-07-05 03:57 PM by enigmatic
Far and away. The stuff he did w/ P-Funk is a monument to how for a short time, he was Hendix's equal as a guitarist; w/ "Maggot Brain" (still the greatest extended guitar solo of all-time, if only for Eddie's emotional playing)he exceeded Hendrix, IMO.

The guy was a Legend, and left us far too soon.

35. So THAT'S who Jimi Hazel (24-7 Spyz) named himself after!
I always thought the Hazel part was just derived from Purple Haze; good to have that cleared up. (Suspect that most listeners would have just as well had him call himself Vernon Reid, Jr., but that's another story.:))

20. quibbling about the premise
My opinion is that one of the key components of rock and roll is living in the moment. It's not something to hang in a museum. It's something to enjoy at the time. Nevertheless, I think any list would be woefully imcomplete without mentioning Chuck Berry

23. Jimi Hendrix reinvented rock guitar
Edited on Fri Oct-07-05 04:42 PM by aint_no_life_nowhere
There's a clear demarcation in rock guitar pre-Hendrix and post-Hendrix. Even in the playing of Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, and Eric Clapton you can hear the influence. How anyone could even mention people like Jimmy Page, Mark Knopfler, or Townshend without including Hendrix is ever-perplexing to me every time I see these frequest posts. Even Stevie Ray was in awe of Hendrix and considered him a God. Listen to the live albums of Hendrix such as the ones produced by the contraband label Rubber Dubber in the 1970's and Hendrix' versions of tunes like "Hear My Train A Comin'". They're great. They're beyond great.

I don't mind someone having their favorite rock guitarist. There are many great technicians and even some with true genius who have expanded rock guitar. I would mention John McLaughlin in that select group.

But to always leave Hendrix out is just beyond belief to me. I consider the impact his music every bit as important and revolutionary as the Beatles on rock and roll.

(edited for terrible spelling)

He was a great musician and also a fascinating personality in the world of rock. The Who were never the same after his untimely departure.

I just said I don't take things seriously and there you go tossing around terms like untimely departure. Does anyone have a timely departure? Should we start a rock stars that should be dead thread? BTW, have you seen the movie the Gene Krupa Story? It's where Moon got most of his moves and persona

28. Hendrix. No one else comes close.
I love Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Jerry Garcia, Jimmy Page, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Pete Townsend..., bunch of others.

but hendrix did things with a guitar that no one else came close to -- before him or after.

everybody playing today owes him.

Why? If not for him, I would've thought Kiss was what rock music was all about. Not that Ace Frehley isn't talented himself, but c'mon.

For folky acoustical stuff, I like Kevn Kinney.
