Sports Establishment?

Okay, I'm just a 40-something-year-old mom .. but .. my Chargers just beat one of the most powerful teams in football! Fair and square! I don't want to hear any whining about losing Rodney.

Boomer Berman, on ESPN, was congratulating Eli Manning, and we kicked Eli's buttocks last week!

Why didn't he or Tom give their gameball to Drew Brees or L.T.?

Hineyheads!

2. How come all I ever hear is whining about "East Coast bias"
when all I ever hear about with regards to college football for the past 3 years is how good USC is?

There were a LOT of great performances in the NFL today. Only two got recognized. I fail to see the bias involved.

7. Eh ... I was just whining.
USC .. uh .. my snooty aunt went there.

Only spend a few minutes at my wedding - I haven't visited with her since.

I would hate to hear about SC all of the time myself; I guess I don't pay attention to that.

Hmmm ... I'll admit I did not see the entire NFL Primetime program today; I will have to re-evaluate my words.

I will have to watch the highlights of our win ... again and again.

4. 2-2
Lost first playoff game last year. At home. Otherwise, no significant recent success, unless you count 1994 as recent.

ESPN Primetime made this game their "Prime Cut," or the focus game of the week with the longest segment of highlights.

Berman loves the old '60s uniforms. The week your Chargers wear those, I guarantee he'll give the game more coverage than it warrants, regardless of the outcome.

6. Well, I like those unis too.
We went 12-4 last year, and I went to my first playoff game!

8. I love those unis!
That shade of blue is awesome. I can't believe they don't go back permanently. The Jets wised up and returned to their Namath-era helmets and color scheme. Not that it's been consistently effective for them...

I went to USC, BTW. Admittedly, plenty of snooty future aunts there. But tons of great people, too. This week is homecoming, and a huge number of events commemorating the 125th anniversary of the school. I'm expecting to see friends who have been AWOL for more than a decade.

That Chargers/Pats segment on NFL Primetime was near the end. Should be replayed late tonight. It included an interview with Tomlinson and highlights of almost every TD.

10. Thanks. No offense intended.
I'm sorry.

Yes, I'm sure that there are very nice people who go to USC, like yourself; I should not have stereotyped.

16. It would only have offended me if you wrote Southern Cal
Now, talk about a media pet peeve. That's mine. Bigtime. The eastern and midwestern press is ignorantly insistent on using that term, even though it's not an accepted one by my university. Our sports information department makes annual requests of the media covering USC games NOT to use that term. Most of them blatantly ignore it. Although I must commend Dan Fouts of ABC. He used to be a regular practitioner/botcher but now gets it right every time.

You wrote SC, Maat. That was perfect! And evidence you're a Californian. I live in Las Vegas now, and can always identify the Californians. They'll say, " When does 'SC play?" Sometimes I'll hear a moron from elsewhere tell them, "Southern Cal doesn't start until 3:30."

9. L.T. is killing em out there.
I wish the Chargers had pulled that one out against the Cowboys.

The Chargers seem to be the best team in their division, now. Denver has won one more, but I think the Chargers are a stronger team.

11. We shot ourselves in the foot.
We were so anxious to get a deal signed with Antonio Gates, that the Chargers' office pulled some contract-related maneuver such that Gates was not allowed to play for three games, including the first one (kind of equivalent to a suspension for three games):

http://www.chargers.com/news/headline_detail.cfm?news_key=2269 .

I was there at the Q for one of the games we lost; everyone on the team seemed possessed by aliens - sluggish, disoriented ones. It was weird.

Oh, well. They seem back on top now.

I'm like the team - we lose the easy ones in life, somehow winning the hard ones.

14. I think the Chargers and Oakland are better than their records.
After this week, you could also add New England to that list.

I will be interested to see if Washington can keep something going. They have 3 close victories, last year they would have lost them close. They need to put more points on the board, though.

The Chargers don't seem to have a problem in the points department.

12. Charger fan here
And this is true about the east coast sports establishment in general. Consider the PAC-10 college football conference - with the exception of USC this year, they usually downplay PAC-10 teams in favor of southeast or midwest teams.

Never mind that the PAC-10 conference has given us many of pro football's very best players.

13. The same reason the Yankees are guaranteed to be on prime time
during the playoffs. East Coast bias. And for anyone who thinks there is excess talk about USC in the college football ranks is because there is no better team in the NCAA at this time. Congrats to the Chargers on their pasting of the world champion Patriots.

Yes, losing to Dallas... but they also started at 1-2 last year, finishing at 12-4. No soft schedule either.

As well as the rest of the ESPN staff.

I do agree with your major point though. The Chargers dont' get a lot of hype from the media.

Seriously, I'm sorry you will miss the game. It's always a fun one.

One thing I can say is ... T.O. is ALWAYS entertaining. I think his antics are funny (but, I accept that others don't).
