I didn't realize that cereal had become so EXPENSIVE!
I wanted to revisit my childhood eating habits with a bowl of Lucky Charms, so I went to the store to buy some. The cost for a box?

$5.95!

What happened! When I was a regular cereal consumer, it wasn't over $3.00 for a box!

They better be magically delicious for what I spent.

4. When we were kids,
and there were six of us, cereal was about all we could afford for breakfast. Now I rarely buy it unless it's on a really good sale.

7. Everything seems to have gone up.
BTW-the cereal price increase is being blamed on Katrina because of the sugar.

9. yes it was.
but the recent increase is being blamed on that. Coffee has jumped sky high too in the past month.

10. The hubband
is in a tough spot over the coffee but seems to be making do with the really cheap stuff. We were experiencing coffee prices going up and down like crazy this whole past year. Everytime I found it for $5-$6 for the big can, I would buy a couple cans. Wish we could afford fair trade coffee but that is an occassional luxury, very occassional.

22. I've been watering it down.
I have to make it stretch somehow. It had gone up in the last year but I've really noticed a huge increase in the last month.
I hate whining about something like this when it's attributed to a tragedy. OTOH, grocery prices that had already jumped in the past year have now dramatically increased in my area and I've had to make some big cuts. Plus, my garden did not come in at all this year(drought in my area) so I have more groceries that I have to purchase this year than usual.
I know I'm not the only one who is having budget problems between the price of gas and groceries. People are hurting all around.

13. It's horribly expensive
And kids will eat several bowls at a time - to keep teenagers in cereal alone will break a family.

I hope you enjoy your Lucky Charms though.

14. I always buy the stuff in bags...
that usually doesn't cost over $3.00 a bag, and you get more cereal than what comes in the box-and they have a "Lucky Charms" knockoff. We only buy the "Cheerio" variations. My kids have the choice of that or oatmeal, otherwise Sheee-it! I'd go broke!

15. Cereal stinks, anyway. Preprocessed garbage.
Of course you are entitled to eat your treat every now and then, but I can't believe that that stuff makes up a major proportion of a lot of people's diets. It's got a TON of simple sugars, preservatives, etc. So bad for you.

into natural vanilla yogurt for breakfast and a great snack... and suddenly, our asses are getting smaller.

16. So you'll have them for a treat and not buy them for a while.
I stock up on spoon-size shredded wheat when the store sells them 2 for $5. I also buy Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios, and I tend to stock up when those are on sale. The only other cereals I buy are occasional boxes of Kix, Rice Krispies, Raisin Bran, Grape Nuts Flakes or granola.

Or rather: quite shocked.

I can get a pound (500 grammes) of organic granola for well under €3 here...

20. That's reasonable.
But cereal is just insanely expensive here.

I thought grains were supposed to be the cheap food?

Yet another reason why I eat managed-carb now. ;-) I don't have to buy that stuff.

23. They are cheap, but ...
When gas prices go up, so too does the price of shipping that cereal around and eventually to your store. They're getting you for it at the checkout counter. :)

24. well,
I had a few weeks at an US university: no car, just a room near campus.

I went into a nearby Shaw's and I was like "You gotta be kidding" when I saw the prices :D .

28. All the name brand stuff is outrageous
Probably because of advertizing.

I buy the store brands. Kellogs frosted flakes - $4 a box. Store brand frosted flakes $1.50 a box.

29. There has been a deep shortage of leprechauns
And what few are left, will not willingly have their charms cut off them so they can make more boxes of that tasty cereal. (wild guess  )

30. I get..
bags of bran flakes and corn flakes in bulk, mix them with sliced almonds, sometimes raisins, flax seeds and chocolate chips to make my own cereal. My kids love it and I feel better by not giving them sugar coated carbs.
