I saw this movie in the early 1970s. Rich Little who did a great impersonation of Tricky Dick Nixon on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show played the lead role. Herb Voland of MASH played Spiro Agnew. At the same time, they were doing Laurel and Hardy schtick. The movie was written and directed by Super Dave Osborne (Bob Einstein).
There were several absolutely hilarious moments in this movie: a farting scene in the Presidential Limousine, Tricky Dick smoking reefer, and a lot of slapstick humor. There's a scene where Nixon awakens in the morning and looks at his face in the mirror, shaking his jowels, that had me nearly collapsing to the movie theater floor in laughter. There's no great storyline and it's pretty childish slapstick, but I guess seeing this kind of fun poked at Nixon while he was still in office made it outrageously funny.
I think Nixon and the Republican Party put pressure on the theater chains to cut short the distribution of the movie. I don't think it's ever been on network television or released in video or DVD. It should be a major cult classic. Can you imagine a full length feature film comedy of the Chimp and Cheney? The Chimp could be doing cheerleader routines or entertaining White House manwhores while Cheney emerges from his bunker like one of the living dead. I think I'll start working on the screenplay right now.
Anyway, I'd be interested in knowing if anyone else has seen this film and what they thought of it.
