Paying for it. How do people eat this on a regular basis? I mean, it's absolutely shattering. My stomach feels like there's elves with blowtorches working away at it.

1. Not one of my favorites!
My mom loved to make it, but I hated to eat it!

3. The only time I've really liked Meat Loaf was in Fight Club...
Not a huge fan of his music, so I see where you're coming from.

(I know, you're talking about the food. I'm trying to be funny.)

I have seen some recipes that have some salsa in them -- I wonder if yours had that. I wouldn't want to eat that either! Hope you feel better.

11. my mom made the best meatloaf
home-made might be the way to go. It was wonderful. I pretty much gave up eating red meat, so I have not had meatloaf in years.

13. My mom always made it with Lipton Onion Soup Mix and
ketchup on top. It wouldn't kill ya but it could give you some heart burn.

Do they make it that way in Canada?

14. I've had several versions
The one that I liked best was from the college dining hall when the chef made meat loaf with spices and salsa. I wrote a positive comment about that. The dining hall management was upset though and told him that he would be fired if he made it again. They thought that we should only be served bland food.

17. We don't often eat meatloaf in Canada - it's more of a US thing
Oddly we eat a shitload of Kraft dinner, if that was the connection you were trying to make. (WHich I doubt)

Did you know that Canadians eat the most Kraft Dinner per capita of any nation in the world? We're crazy for the stuff.

19. Gotta love meat loaf
I get comps to the buffets here in Las Vegas, due to job-related ties to the sportsbooks. A friend of mine who is a supervisor at one sportsbook always knows when I'll show up, and greets me with a smile: "What a surprise. It's meat loaf night at the buffet. Here, I wrote it for you hours ago."

20. Some people treat meatloaf like a garbage disposal
and think they can throw any kitchen scraps in it. So if you ever hear someone say no two meatloafs taste the same that why. Meatloaf can be great if made right.

I've got to question how decent the restaurant you had it at was because no meal should ever make your stomach feel like that.

21. we're having meatloaf for dinner tonight
don't know how yours was made, but mine is great!

ingredients:

Hamburg (1 lb - feeds 3)
bread crumbs (1 cup
2 eggs
milk (1/2 cup)
onions (1 large)
italian seasoning (varies depending on how spicy you like things)
parmasan cheese (1 cup)
can of tomato sauce

1. Dice up the onion

2. in a mixing bowl - put in the hamburg, onion, eggs, parmasan cheese, italian seasoning. mix it all together. add bread crumbs and milk - mix it together. should be moist. if too dry add a splash more of milk. if too wet add a bit more bread crumbs

3. oil down a small baking dish - add some tomatoe sauce to bottom on the dish just enough to cover the bottom

4. form/mold meatloaf mix into a loaf shape and put in the baking dish

5. pour remaining tomato sauce over it, covering top and sides

6. bake at 350deg for about an hour

23. All meatloaf is is a hamburger in loaf form
Of course, a lot of people make them poorly.

But a meat load should be no different than a burger, except for the use of breading (or eggs) to hold it all together.

24. It's a bit more than than -- Recipe Follows
Edited on Sun Oct-02-05 07:56 AM by Jeff In Milwaukee
Brown Sugar Ketchup Glaze

1/2 cup ketchup
4 tablespoons brown sugar
4 teaspoons vinegar (any type)

Meat Loaf

2 teaspoons vegetable oil
1 medium onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves minced
2 large eggs
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon hot sauce
1/2 cup milk
1 lb ground chuck
1/2 lb ground pork
1/2 lb ground veal
2/3 cup crushed saltine crackers, about 16
1/3 cup minced parsley

For the glaze, mix all ingredients in small pan, set aside. For the meatloaf, heat oven to 350 degrees. Heat oil in medium skillet. Add onion and garlic; sautîfntil softened, about 5 minutes. Set aside to cool. Mix eggs with salt, pepper, thyme, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and milk. Add to meat in large bowl along with crackers, parsley and cooked onion and garlic. Mix with fork until evenly blended and mixture doesn?t stick to the bowl. If it sticks add milk. With wet hands, pat mixture into 9x5-inch loaf shape. Place in foil lined baking pan for easy clean up. Brush with half the glaze. Bake until crisp, about 1 hour. Cool at least 20 minutes and serve with the remaining glaze.

Edit: The combination of beef, pork and veal is basic to most meatloaf recipes. Unless you like a truly gourmet hamburger, a good meatloaf is somewhat more complicated.

29. Then you're not living right!
But seriously, some chain restaurants (i.e., Applebee's and others) are offering meatloaf as a "comfort food" entree. But I would look for the meatloaf from a good Mom n' Pop restaurant; more likely that it will be made from scratch.

28. All meatloaves are not the same,
There could be some spices or sauces or too much grease in it that upset your stomach.

Hope this doesn't cause you to give up on meatloaf. It really can be good.

31. Not the way my mommy makes it.
She makes it with onion soup mix, a bit of parsley, some other herbs and spices. It's the best meat loaf I ever tasted. I'm never been a big fan of meatloaf, including hers, until she started making it this way.

33. my cousin makes meatloaf whenever i come over, only its
a goddam frozen costco "stomach plug" special (barf bag not included) -- that she puts some of her own sauce on. Being hungry, I eat in and boy, I pay the price, too. I feel for you. Give me a nice salad with a little lemon juice and olive oil. The key to life is eating a mediterranean diet, not skipping breakfast and drinking lots of water.
