not into leaving marks.

I didn't know you left. I've been away for a while.

I do have a scar on my left eye brow that you can't see 'cause it's under my eyebrow. 70 some stiches by a plastic surgeon to put my face back on and he hid it all under my eyebrow. I was very lucky that a PS was working the ER that day.

10. I've got 2 on my face.
A half-inch vertical scar down from the corner of my right eye. Same side, an inch-long horizontal scar about an inch-and-a-half below my eye.

The first was from being tripped by my brother and hitting the corner of the coffee table at around age 6 or 7. The second was a bite from a German Shepherd when I was 4.

Have several on my knuckles on my left hand from a bike accident, it was cool, I saw BONE!!!! Have another on my right eyebrow from an industrial accident. Several on my arms from cats, one under my tongue when it was cut, after my tonsillectomy. I also have one that is one tenth of a millimeter away from my iris on my left eye from a bottle rocket that exploded in front of it. That was the weirdest thing I ever experienced, hurt like hell, but I had to have the powder removed from around the eye by the eye doctor. Imagine having a suction cup put over the eye, it being SLOWLY removed from the socket, and a q-tip being used to remove gunk from behind it. No drugs, never forget that medical procedure ever.

39. Yep, I was one tenth of a millimeter from being blinded in one eye...
Also, I have like a 55% chance of getting glaucoma in that eye at old age, have to get it checked EVERY time I'm at the eye doctor. I was like 10 at the time, and I remember the doctor telling me that if I flinched or moved the eye, I could be blinded during the procedure. It was just freaky.

34. I have one on my right hand wrist just above the wristbone
A few years ago I was walking across an office parking lot from one building to another holding a huge stack of checks just printed. Millions of dollars in checks, and I tripped and fell, scattering the checks everywhere. I was so worried about them that I didn't realize right away the patch of road rash up and down my arm. Fortunately there were other people around, I was taken care of and the checks were recovered. It all healed without a scar except for that one patch on my wrist.

36. Many, mostly from weird accidents.
One on my right index finger from where I sliced it with a knife while I was trying to dislodge a dried lump of glue from a model of the Empire State Building I was building for my 7th grade history class.

One on my left ring finger from a bread knife at work.

One on my right middle finger from the cheese slicer at that same job (I used to work in the Safeway deli).

On high up on my right thigh from when I was ten and flying back from India. I got up to use the bathroom on the plane and walked into the back of the arm rest on the seat in front of me. How that resulted in a deep gash on my leg, I don't know but it's the only thing that could have done it.

I have many more, mostly on my fingers, that I can't remember where they came from.

In other words, I have a lot of scars. I've also given a lot people a lot of scars, but that's another bunch of stories.

Edited on Thu Sep-29-05 12:21 PM by rbnyc
between my breasts-impaled on fence
forehead, left arm, tummy - chicken pox
left hand - giving an enema to a cat

Once I was in the bathroom of this tiny bar in Grand Isle, LA with some locals whom I could not understand at all--not a word. We were smoking what I thought was just a regular joint, but god knows what the hell it actually was, because eventually everything just completely melted. But while I was standing there, one of the guys was showing me all his scars. He would point to each one and, I'm assuming, explain how he got it. Of course his Cajun accent was so thick, and with everything melting and all, I had no clue what he was saying. I just kept nodding and saying wow as he showed me hideous scar after hideous scar. Eventually, I was rescued by a girlfriend. But I'll never forget this weird little moment.

45. I have 27 scars on my chest
I was the rear passenger in a car that rolled over, and I wasn't wearing a seat belt. When the car rolled, all of the windows broke and I hit the ceiling. When it rolled back upright, I fell back onto the seat below...which was covered in shattered glass at that point.

I spent three hours having 24 pieces of glass removed from my chest in the ER after the accident, and three additional pieces have been removed since. Still, my doctor and I know of seven more tiny ones that are still in there but aren't worth removing.

I have countless other scars on my body, but that's pretty much the norm for a person who spent his youth skateboarding, rock climbing, and backpacking the Sierra's. I have a long one that runs from my knee to my hip thanks to a runin between my skateboard and the hood ornament of a Mercedes, and a scar halfway around one of my arms from the fingernail of a pissed off ex girlfriend.

A quick inventory
A circular scar on my forehead from when I was about ten. I shot my BB gun at a tree and hit the head of a nail that had been hammered into the tree. BB ricocheted and hit me in the forehead. What were the chances of that happening?

A 2 inch scar across my right index finger. I dropped a skill saw in the floor, it bounced back up without the guard closing and landed on my finger. Ouch. This happened while my father and I were working on an addition to his house. My mother had just gotten new carpet for the living room. I remember going inside to the bathroom and my mom yelling at me not to drip blood on the new carpet. Thanks mom.

A hernia operation scar from when I was six months old.

A chunk of pencil lead embedded in my thigh. Kathy Edwards jabbed me with a pencil in Sunday School class when I was ten.

A nasty indentation and scar just below my knee cap. I was drunk and running through a field trying to avoid the cops who had arrived at an out of control high school party. The field suddenly became a ditch and I fell on a tree limb in the ditch.

A circular scar in the web of skin between my thumb and first finger. I was working in a cabinet makers shop and was standing next to a coworker who dropped an air hammer. Finishing nail right through the the skin. It hurt more to pull it out.

Several on my back from losing control of my bike on a gravel road. Sliding on your back on gravel hurts.

A big one on my left leg. Double compound fracture. Both the tibia and fibula came through the skin when I broke my leg in a motorcycle accident. Note to bikers: Motorcycle + inattentive farmer in pickup truck = big pain.

49. Right knee and chin (the visible ones)
I cut open my right knee when I was nine years old. I fell of my bike and cut it open on a rock, exposing my kneecap. Seven stitches closed that one up.

I have another scar on my chin. I fell out of my crib when I was two years old and cracked my chin open on the hardwood floor. We lived out in the country and my mom didn't have a car, so she had to call my grandfather to pick me up and take me to the ER for stitches.

I may have one on my skull from when a tree fell on me in a tornado, but I've never been bald so I've never seen it.

And then there's the emotional scars, but I won't go there.

51. I'm hot-blooded ... apparently....
I have one on my palm where I was stabbed while playing Tarzan.

I have another on two fingers where I was cut when fighting for possesion of a knife.

I have another where I almost sliced off a knuckle putting my hand through a plate glass window. Oh, and there's the long, thin, horizontal gash on the underside of my forearm from the same incident.

Are you afraid of me yet? This is just a small sample. I had a turbulent youth.

(cue AC/DC: "I'm a problem child!")

53. I have 4 that I can think of
The first ones I got from chicken pox. I picked off two really big ones on my forehead and they've left permanent marks. Fortunately, they aren't miscolored and just look like dimples. Some people have even told me they're cute!

One time I was climbing a chain-link fence when I was about 8. I was wearing shorts and when I got to the top, the back of my thigh got caught on a sharp piece of the fence that was sticking up and it gave me a really deep cut that almost required stitches.

Now for the battle scars:

In 4th grade this girl and I were bored and decided to have a scissors fight. Of course, we didn't want anybody to get stabbed so we agreed to fight with the handles while holding the blades in our hands. That worked well until she hit the top of my scissors, driving the blade down into my hand. I have a barely visible scar from that on the heel of my hand. It hurt really bad at the time, but I was mostly just embarassed at having to explain it to my mom.

Lastly, one time before a high school tennis match I cut my 4th finger opening the ball can. It got in the way as I peeled the aluminium lid off. I didn't know anything happened until I was like "what's all this blood on the ground? Oh! It's mine!!!" I sliced a pretty deep scar on the side of my finger. It appeared to have healed a couple weeks later, but a patch of white dead skin the size of half a dime was hanging off the side. Nobody knew what to do with it, so rather than go to the doctor I just bit it off with my own teeth. Didn't hurt, no harm done and everything healed fine. I just have a little translucent scar there.

54. I once jumped out of a girlfriend's moving car.
It was an exceptionally immature way to end a relationship, and it left scars all around.

My scars document my utter idiocy as a child and young man. I fought. I played with fire, explosives, toxic chemicals and high voltages. I fried my skin in the sun. And quite a few times I slid down the road at high speeds, sometimes wearing nothing more than shorts and a t-shirt.

I'm sure my guardian angel hates me, but he is good at his job.

56. LOL! Okay, that's the first time I've encountered that question on..
the internet.

I have two large surgical scars from osteomyelitis. One on the inside of my left thigh and one on my left hip/buttock. The IV scar from those surgeries is located on the inside of my right ankle. The scar on my thigh used to be up near the groin. When I was growing up I had hopes that it would eventually be covered by shorts and skirts. No luck. We grow down from our groin area, not up from our knees. The scar is almost down to my boney knees and very noticeable. Thank you 1970-era Army surgeons.

Having given birth three times, once with an episiotomy, I'm sure I have another scar but I couldn't begin to guess what it looks like.

Other than that I think I'm mostly clear except for an incredibly annoying tendency to bruise when breathed upon.

57. Ok....
I have a scar on my forehead from running face first into a tree.

I have cigarette burn scars on my arms, fingers and toes (don't ask - it was just me and my exwife getting kinkier than was good for us).

I have hesitation marks on both wrists (bad adolescence).

I have my exlover's name carved into my left bicep.

I have a really bad scar on my nose where my Mom's cat bit me and wouldn't let go.

I have scars on my shoulders from a fairly brutal public flogging (but a good time was had by all).

Damn, most of those were intentional, huh?

Khash.
