Greatest Movie Endings?
The thread about surprise endings got me to thinking... even when things turn out mostly (or completely) like you expected, a good ending can still pack a punch.

Best endings include:

"The Godfather" - when Kate Corleone mournfully realizes the truth about Michael, as the door shuts on her.

"The Player" - the ultimate satirical send-up of Hollywood happy endings, neatly, perfectly wrapping the movie.

"Revenge of the Sith" - when Lars, Beru, Obi-Wan, and the infant Luke watch the twin suns set on Tattooine. One of the great self-homages to one of the most iconic scenes in movie myth: the adult Luke in 'A New Hope', which was Joseph Campbell's hero in a snapshot.

77. No.
I've seen both, and the US version isn't even the same movie.

Surprise! A US remake of a foreign film is sub-par!

See: Vanishing.

See: Chronos.

See: Her Himmel Uber Berlin/Wings of Desire.

And not just for the twist value but the implications of what Rosebud really meant to Kane.

THX-1138 as the music soars and that gigantic sun.

Millenium Actress, since it is not as well known I will not say why, but it makes me cry with both happiness and sadness at the same time, hell I am tearing up just thinking about it.

45. Included a great quote from Lincoln's first inaugural address
"We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the

better angels of our nature.

Especially taken after the newly suited Darth Vader and the Emperor looking on the building of the Death Star.

In addition to that, I would add "The Silence of the Lambs" That clip of Hannibal saying"I do wish we could chat longer, but....I'm having an old friend for dinner." Then, walking off into the crowd.

Like I said, it was funny like that in the hood sometimes. I mean you never knew what was gonna happen or when.

I've done too much to turn back, and I've done too much to go on. I guess in the end it all catches up with you.

62. Bob Roberts
I liked the Jefferson Memorial shots and the Woody Guthrie song, but I'm a little annoyed that the Woody Guthrie song is impossible to find on a reasonably priced CD; and it wasn't realistic since the Jefferson Memorial isn't centrally located

When Verbal Kint (Kevin Spacey) morphs into Keyser Soze, and Dave Kujan's (Chazz Palminteri) realization that he's been conned by Verbal.

One of my all-time favorite movies!

. ... I LOVE Vanishing Point - I saw that when I was about 17 and I thought it was the coolest movie ever.

Watched it again a couple years ago and even knowing the ending I loved it.

I've never seen Jacob's Ladder, probably need to :)

I can see why Smith didn't put it in the final version, but it was good to see it on the DVD. And the bit after the credits was perfect.

102. "Dirty Mary and Crazy Larry"
I remember seeing that when I was about 9 years old and it freaked me out. Talk about an abrupt ending. As soon as they thought they had found freedom, their car crashes into the side of a train at about 100 mph. Credits roll.

105. 2 Italian movies: "La Strada" and "Il Sorpasso"
When the brutish Zampano (Anthony Quinn) finally breaks down on the beach and cries after he learns that Gelsomina (Giulietta Messina) has died, that was to me one of the greatest movie endings of all time. The camera just pulls out with the lonely figure crying on the beach.

In "Il Sorpasso", the kind, timid, naive law student (Jean Louis Trintignant) goes over a cliff in the sports car, while the shiftless, bombastic, hedonistic Bruno (incredible, incredible, INCREDIBLE! performance by Vittorio Gassman) leaps to safety. That tragic ending just leaves me stunned every time I see this great flic from the '60s. This film is in my top 20 favorites.

106. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (spoilers)
After Gwyneth Paltrow's girl-reporter character has been hoarding her camera's film throughout most of the wonders she encounters in the adventure, she is finally presented with one of the most fantastic tableaus imaginable. As she sighs in satisfaction at having gotten the perfect snap, Jude Law looks at her tenderly, and gently says...

..."Lens cap."

Hilarious!
