Why don't people wear helmets anymore when cycling??
Is it just me, or does it seem like more and more people on bikes these days are not riding with helmets?? I am completely mystified by this, b/c it's literally a NO-BRAINER, in my book. (Pun intended.)

Mine saved my life recently in a fall, so I can testify to their worth. I am also a helmet Nazi with my kids.

I live near a college town and everyday I see these young adults riding around, wearing earplugs, completely clueless...I just want to shake them and say, "YOUR MAMA LOVES YOU! WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?!?"

Life is precious and fragile and we appreciate more when we don't take it for granted.

2. competing for the Darwin awards
I swear I saw two clueless helmetless woman bike riding in my neighbourhood. One was pedalling up the steep hill in front of my place DIALING AND TALKING ON THE PHONE (not hands free) and yesterday, McIdiot #2, drinking a fancy coffee. Damn

4. Yeah, the stupidity is shocking.
It's also kind of sad, actually.

I go back and forth between Pity, b/c they apparently don't know any better, and Anger, because I think they SHOULD.

17. My sis goes blasting through here
(It's a good hill) and she would not THINK of not wearing a helmet.

Mind you, Ms. Fashion Conscious had to have the pants, gloves and shoes first.
Her then-boyfriend, had been telling her that helmets were necessary, when they came across a guy on a trail out in the sticks (Bainbridge Island) who was unconscious and bleeding from his headholes (mouth, nose and ears), not wearing a helmet.
She walked her bike miles to the ferry, after realising life in a persistant vegetative state was not very fashionable at all.

Edited on Fri Sep-23-05 07:01 PM by Skittles
where it actually does get cold and you have a lot of wet chilly days - then a two day period in February with ice and snow where the whole state practically shuts down - then it starts getting hot again, oh, around the end of March. :o

OH - look for the yearly news article declaring WINTER BLAST HITS TEXAS! This will mean temps have dropped to 50's or 40's!!!!!!!!!!!

8. Yeah, I hear ya on the heat thing...but is it really worth the risk,
just to keep cool and to avoid "helmet hair"?

I've always just worn a bandana tied around my forehead to deal with the sweat when I'm cycling...but hey, that's just me.

Ride safe, Skittles!! Things can change fast on the road.... :hi:

Peace,
~Shine

16. Yeah, I'm a "roadie" girl, so I'm out there on the roads all the time...
That is, until I finish recovering from the concussion I got on my recent fall. My front tire slipped in a miniscule amount of water as I was making a turn and I banged my right temple against the curb. Cracked my helmet. Seriously, I am lucky to be alive.

I guess it wasn't my time to go....

18. Well, when people ride on sidewalks on the time...
I'm sure some innocent person will cushion the fall.

Sorry, I just can't walk outside anymore without being nearly hit by cyclists whipping by on the sidewalk.

(((rant ends))))

I see you are a SMART cyclist, good for you. :D

20. Yeah, good answer!! "Serious cyclists wear helmets"
The "slow ones" who don't wear helmets may someday end up being literally slow...i.e., in a vegetative state!
