Name the best television characters, of all time!
Edited on Sun Sep-18-05 12:07 AM by bliss_eternal
TV Guide did this a several years ago, and their list pissed me off because it left off some of my favorites.

I'll start the list with Rev. Jim, played by Christopher Lloyd on Taxi.

:hi:

180. Diane, 11:30 a.m., February Twenty-fourth.
Entering the town of Twin Peaks, five miles south of the Canadian border, twelve miles west of the state line. I've never seen so many trees in my life. As W. C. Fields would say, I'd rather be here than Philadelphia. Fifty-four degrees on a slightly overcast day. Weatherman said rain. If you could get paid that kind of money for being wrong sixty percent of the time, it'd beat working. Mileage is seventy-nine thousand three hundred forty-five, gauge is on reserve, riding on fumes here, I've got to tank up when I get into town. Remind me to tell you how much that is. Lunch was, uh, six dollars and thirty-one cents at the Lamplighter Inn, that's on Highway Two near Lewis Fork. That was a tuna fish sandwich on whole wheat, slice of cherry pie, and a cup of coffee. Damn good food. Diane, if you ever get up this way that cherry pie is worth a stop. Okay. Looks like I'll be meeting up with the, ah, Sheriff Harry S. Truman. Shouldn't be too hard to remember that. He'll be at the Calhoun Memorial Hospital. I guess we're going to go up to intensive care and take a look at that girl that crawled down the railroad tracks off the mountain. When I finish there I'll be checking into a motel. I'm sure the sheriff will be able to recommend a clean place, reasonably priced. That's what I need, a clean place, reasonably priced. Oh Diane, I almost forgot. Got to find out what kind of trees these are. They're really something.

72. curiouser and curiouser. But turkeys can fly
My nieces love this story. I was playing fetch with my dog on my property in a little clearing. When she plays fetch, it becomes tug of war because, while she brings it back, she does not want to give up the stick. So I am chasing around after her and I jump into a fight stance, arms and legs spread apart and do my "duck call" which sounds like a kazoo, except I use the back of my throat. Right after I do this a turkey just explodes out of the tall grass about four feet behind my dog. It took off flying, making a sound like a cross between a lawnmower starting up and half a dozen playing cards on a bicycle tire. Scared the crap out of both of us! My dog is standing there with her mouth hanging open :wow: and I am doing this

So, yes big guy, they can fly, but the commercial ones have their wings clipped so they can be kept in open pens and not escape before Cursegiving. I love the line "Turkeys are falling to the ground, like, like bags of wet cement."

Ducks can fly too, but Daffy usually forgets to when he steps off of a cliff.

138. "One just went through the windsheild of a parked car!"
WKRP was hilarious! I couldn't decide who was a better character; Les or Herb Tarlek.

Remember the "Real Families" episode with Peter Marshall, where Herb enters his family in a "reality" show? There's this one sequence in which he and Lucille are startled awake on Sunday morning by the camera crew, and put on this sharade of going to church...

Herb tells the daughter (Bunny?) that they're going to church.

Bunny: "Where?!"

Herb: "Church, just like every sunday"

Then they drive around and around while being followed by the Real Families camera crew, as they look for a church to go to. They find one, and pull into the parking lot, but it's empty.

It's empty because it's a synagogue.

So Herb peels out of the parking lot and races through suburbia in an attempt to lose the camera crew's van.

And then there was the one where Herb, dressed as a giant fish (the WKRP "KARP") tries to sneek under the door of a pay toilet, and gets caught by the WPIG "PIG"... and hilarity ensues...

I hope it comes out on DVD soon... The Comedy Network was running WKRP for a while here in Canada, but at some ungodly time like 5:00am.

198. Turkeys
Turkeys fly well. They also roost in trees at night . They roost in flocks in the same tree . I once watched 8 turkeys come off their roost as day was breaking. They will use the same tree if not bothered. A male Tom will attack just about anything when hes in the mood for love. Males arent real bright come mating season. But yes, wild turkeys are strong fliers.

26. Can't believe I was first on that one!
:D

I have been ADDICTED to All in the Family since I returned to the USA after four years abroad. It seems to be the only thing on Nick/TVLand that is pre-1980. Although I think they are showing them in order... this week has been all Archie's Place, and, not only am I really bummed out by THAT, but I am afraid they will stop showing them when they get to the end, just like they did Donna Reed, Patty Duke, and the Monkees!

I am not even old, but I don't know about you... I DO NOT turn on Nick at Nite to see The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air or Who's the Boss. And they show almost NOTHING from the 50s/60s now...

:(

Some of the older shows are in licensing limbo at the moment... Honeymooners, I love Lucy, Secret Agent, Get Smart. They're all on limited broadcast deals because their owners are pushing DVD boxed sets instead.

46. And it had that annoying kid.
"Danielle Brisbois", the "Cousin Oliver" of New York.

What the fuck was Norman Lear ever thinking when he supported the continuation of AItF after Mike and Gloria moved to California? The whole point of All in the Family, just like it's inspiration "Till Death Us Do Part", was the conflict between two ideological absolutists.

The post Mike/Gloria shows, and the horrible "Archie's Place" were just an embarrassing cash-grab.

that awful spin-off, for Gloria?! What were they thinking?

You're right, the dynamics of the show really suffered without Mike and Gloria--and probably should have ended then and there. I think I heard that they had considered stopping prior to them actually having to leave. Not sure why they didn't just all agree to end it simultaneously.

but Radar, Henry Blake, Klinger, Frank Burns...all in all, M*A*S*H has to rank among the best shows in terms of number of classic characters.

184. Dr. Who definitely

And Yes Tom Baker is my favorite, but how can you compare any other character on TV to The doctor. He's been played by 10 different actors now.

William Hartnell
Patrick Troughton
Jon Pertwee
Tom Baker
Peter Davison
Colin Baker
Sylvester McCoy
Paul McGann

..lastly

Chistopher Eccleston

...and now

David Tennent

and as a runner up, I'd say Max Headroom (the 1st virtual tv star).

from Charmed was my personal favorite. A half human, half demon who knew more about love and sacrafice than the stupid bimbo who claimed to love him and then abandoned him to his fate after he risked his life and soul to save her. All he ever wanted was to become fully human and fully loved.

I also like Christian Troy on Nip/Tuck needing and wanting to be stopped from hurting himself and others, but whose never sure he's worth being saved.

Hercules from Hercules The Legendary Journeys, A good guy with great one liners

Iolaus- HerK's little buddy who was a hero in his own right

K.C. from China Beach- Tried to pretend she was a hard hearted Hannah but who actually had a lot of caring inside her.

Colleen McMurphy from China Beach- The one television character I related to more than any other: "There are no such things as good Catholics only Catholics who are never good enough." It was how I was taught to look at my whole life.

And 17 People...that's one of my favorites. Goood Josh/Donna episode. It's long past due for those two. Like I posted in an earlier thread, if those two don't start something soon, I may throw things.

And with that, I'm going to bed. Bio and World Musics exams tomorrow at 8:30 and 9:30 respectively. Not good a lowly history/international relations major like myself. :)

136. goodnight!
:-) :hi:

unfortunately do to a limit on number of cast members, i had to limit the play to just bartlet, toby, and leo. but it still turned out good. you're definitely right about Josh and donna. i was so pissed when they left the 5th season with josh over donna's bed, then forgot about it completely in the 6th season.

best of luck with your exams!

:hi:

162. Walter Brennan as Grandpappy Amos
The Real McCoys was good hearted fluff but the acting was superb. Walter Brennan, one of American cinema's greatest character actors did a tour de force in creating the personna of Amos McCoy, with the accent, the limping gait, the cantankerous attitude, the high-pitched voice, and the colloquial language. He was the show and it was the greatest role for this outstanding professional.

Mr J: Is there anywhere they do French food?

Basil: Yes, France, I believe. They seem to like it there. And the swim would certainly sharpen your appetite. You'd better hurry, the tide leaves in six minutes.

Basil : ...Oh! Oh, I see!...It's my fault, is it?...Oh, of course, there I was thinking it was your fault because I left you in charge, or Manuel's fault for not waking you, when all the time it was my fault! Oh, it's so obvious now, I've seen the light! Ah well, I must be punished then, mustn't I? (slaps his bottom) You're a naughty boy Fawlty, don't do it again!

Basil : Right, right!! Just stay where you are, because obviously if there was a fire you'd all be standing around here like this in the lobby, wouldn't you?...I don't know why we bother, we should let you all burn...

The American Guest: Couldn't find the freeway. Had to take a little back street called the M5.

Basil: Well I'm sorry it wasn't wide enough for you. A lot of the English cars have steering wheels.

Giles was amazing in Band Candy, when he regressed to his teen years.
