defeat from the jaws of victory? (tennis spoiler alert)
Tennis sure seems to be a strange game. First I watched the end of Dementieva against Davenport. She was ahead 4-3, dropped to 4-5 and had a match point against her. Went to 6-5, and then lost on serve, went up 5-2 in the tie breaker, dropped to 5-6, and then won 8-6. It's like "she's won, no she's choked, no she's won, no she's choked, no she's won, she's choked, and finally she's won.

Now in today's match she beat Pierce handily in the first set. It seemed that the 30 year old Pierce was hurt trying to keep up with the youngster. She had her leg taped up and worked on for about five minutes. Then lost the first game at love, but then won the 2nd set handily, and has another break point in game 3 of the third set, seemingly in control.

I expected Dementieva to be tired from yesterday's match, but I guess we will see.

Watching the current match - for whom are you rooting?

2. well I was leaning Dementieva
for the malest of reasons, then I started hoping it was not a pathetic blow-out. Now the blow-out seems to be going the other way. I would at least like to see Pierce lose the current game, but I despise come-backs.

3. I like them both - doesn't matter to me
I'm definitely for Clijsters in the next match!

5. I like Clijsters a lot and want to see her go all the way here
Sharapova is good, but I don't think she lives up to the hype. My husband can't stand her; he resents the media manipulation (good for him!)

Serena lost to Venus, and Venus lost to Clijsters. Venus looked good at first, but the wheels fell completely off the cart as the match went on.

6. I wonder if Serena wore her out.
The unforced errors by Dementieva in the third set look like partially fatigue to me as well. I am glad to see that Serena can now compete with her sister. I would lean against Sharapova also, and also because of the hype. I was sort of a Clijsters fan when she was challenging a Williams sister. Then she seemed to disappear for a while, at least from the semis. Tennis is getting more TV time now, for those of us without cable or dish. I used to only be able to watch the semis and finals on TV unless I was visiting mom. Mom always seems to root for people that I don't like, and against people that I like. She watches alot of tennis though. I may have gotten her started since that was the sport I lettered in, but she probably bought us all raquets and sent us to the summer tennis program.
