Believe it or not, that song was actually written by none other than Lou Gossett, Jr. :). I heard Richie tell the story around it when I saw him in California back in '97 or so.
Evidently, (he tells the story and only mentions the name at the end), a young actor sent him these lyrics and asked if he'd be interested. . . well he just put them aside and didn't do much. He finally picked them up one day and started playing it, then recorded it. The actor, in the meantime, was out of work and about to be evicted from his apartment, and basically got a royalty check for the song out of the clear blue one day just in time to pay his rent . . . or so Richie tells the story :).
