My Fur Coat. Sure I miss it. Flame away

It looked exactly like this without the trim on the sleeves.
I wore it all over downtown Chicago once the temps hit 30.

There is nothing WARMER, more lightweight, and durable than fur.

Your parka won't cut it when it's 40 below zero outside. Sorry.

59. mink is a renewable resource.
The stuffing in your down parkea? Don't think about it? The petroleum byproduct super waterproof fabric? Nevermind.

Mink would be exterminated as vermin if not used as fur. Better to live & die & be worn by me than never live at all.

I don't get the unethical or immoral part. I am otherwise a cafeteria buddhist/methodist/catholic/jew/etc. and do not harm animals. In fact I catch & release the various snakes, gekkos, lizards, red wasps, birds, turtles, etc. that wander into the house or onto the property. I cried when the damned squirrels nest blew out of our palm tree (it was the softest, most perfect bowl of the BEST, cleanest, finest spanish moss...), and again when she ran by with her baby in her mouth.

I am firmly against Circuses, most private and MANY public zoos, hunting exotic or captive species--in fact, hunting for trophies altogether-- unecessary testing anything on animals, blah blah blah. But the cavemen and native people were RIGHT about fur. Farmed fur, that is.

71. The fur trade is not environmentally friendly.
Direct environmental damage

The farming of animals for fur, while a profitable venture for fur farms, has proven to be an environmental disaster for the planet. So much so, that advertising claims by the fur industry that it is "environmentally friendly" have been deemed false advertising by the Advertising Standard Committees in England, Holland, Finland, Italy and Denmark. Why?

<snip>

- Finland is the world's largest producer of fox. The Finnish National Board of Waters and the Environment said "Environmental problems in the functioning fur farms are still remarkable". In the Finnish town of Kaustinen the taking of ground water had to be halted, and the direction of the current changed due the the waste dumped by fur farms.

- Fur farms are a source of air pollution as well. Finnish fur farms produce 1,500 tons of ammonia every year!

<snip>

Processing of Fur

- In dressing furs, caustic chemicals such as formaldehyde and chromium are used, and these are environmental contaminants which the fur industry has been in trouble for, such as in 1991 when two fur processing plants were fined $1.6 million for "total non-compliance with hazardous waste regulations".

- Tests carried out for the Ford Motor Company found that the production of wild-caught fur costs over 3.5 times as much as fake fur in energy terms, while farmed fur costs over 15 times as much as fake fur.

And BTW, I have no problem with leathers for bikers. I consider it safety equipment. I physically cringe when I see an *asshole* on a bike in sandals, shorts and a t-shirt. Still, it's their choice, and maybe they'll prove Darwin was right, once again.

I wear leather too. But only for warmth.

where the weather is very similar if not identical, you really don't need fur these days. you can get by perfectly well with a good parka-- even when the windchill is -50° and you've got two feet of snow to shovel out of the drive.

and if it ever gets TOO COLD for that, just stay the hell indoors! chances are nobody else will be out either! :hi:

11. My mom gave me a fur coat once.
It evidently was made of unborn calf skin (and fur) Completely grossed me out. Not off a mink farm obviously--low end fur. She has one of seal fur. I eat some meat and wear items from leather, but I've also read books like "Earth Ethics" which heightened my awareness considerably. I've changed many of my habits regarding to animal products and what I buy and don't buy. I continue to educate myself regarding this issue. Fur is one of those items I would never buy. But, until my own side of the street is clean, I won't throw stones.
Peace.

The ice from your breath breaks out of it better than any synthetic. I wear biker leathers frequently. The leather has saved my hide more than once. I don't know of anyone who does not use animal products of one form or another.

unless you are wearing a short dress an addition of long underwear will do you much better. They make the kinds that are easily and comfortably worn under even good clothes. Seriously, I work in Kansas outside on my farm and it gets -40 windchill sometimes and I have never needed fur.

My guess is that the little animals who originally wore that fur also miss it and their lives.

50. Now, I'm not saying I wear fur, but I am saying this.
If my ancestor hadn't have worn fur, then there is a distinct possibility that I would not be here. The Don River valley is exceedingly cold, especially since Summer and Winter are basically the only seasons. I see no problem with people wearing fur in environments that they are necessary in.

That being said, I nearly slapped someone at my High School prom for wearing a fur coat in April in Little Rock, Arkansas. Stupidity for stupidity sake is just wrong; however, we cannot tell Native American tribes in Alaska and Canada, or Russians to not wear fur and leather, to them it is a necessity of life.

53. You didn't have to throw it away
You could have had it made into a blanket, you could have had it made into Teddy Bears, you could have done a lot of things with it. Someone thought highly enough of you to leave you something that was very valuable and to which they probably attached a lot of importance. And you just threw it away because it meant nothing to you.

Man, that's really sad. I don't wear the fur coat that was left to me, but all I have to do is touch it and think of the person who left it to me, how her husband gave it to her for their wedding anniversary, and how he had worked two jobs to get the money to buy her a really nice fur, no short hairs and no small pieces. When it was first given to me, it still smelled vaguely of her perfume. I could never just throw it away like it was just another piece of trash.

33. If that were true, you'd think that
all those polar explorers would have been wearing fur instead of parkas. Which, they weren't. So, I'm betting if warmth is the only issue, you just haven't found a good parka.

81. Thank you SO much for that link!
I have been saying it SO many times over the course of the last two years why couldn't I just collect all the shed fur of the cats and have it made into yarn. I can't weave or knit or even crochet, but this is definitely a superb idea!!

49. is fur even considered fashionable anymore?
Edited on Fri Aug-12-05 04:13 PM by Neo
Even in these cold Ohio winters I've never seen one. I saw some in San Francisco at the opera, and it was like 40- 50 outside. The rich brats were just looking for an excuse to wear their furs. I'm sure it's still worn a lot in the nordic countries.

I highly doubt fur is more durable than synthetic coats. If your into the look than just wear the guilt-free fake fur. I'll stick with my battered 15 year old trench coat. Parkas just look stupid and I keep warm enough from the car to the doorway.

Even here, in Tampa, FLORIDA, you'll see them at any society event from November to March.

55. I grew up around men who trapped and hunted for fur.
It was done so inhumanely. My father, brother and their hunting buddies killed animals out of season to keep the dogs fresh, then threw the unusuable carcasses on the road so it would look like cars, not dogs, had done the damage. To keep the dogs "fresh," they would allow them to harass live raccoons on leashes. When the brave hunters :sarcasm: were finished training the dogs, they would pull the raccoons out of the trees, usually ripping off several nails from the animal's sensitive hands and feet.

One of my father's friends used leg-hold traps to catch bobcats. Have you ever seen an animal in a leg-hold trap? I have. I set one in the garden to catch rabbits. The rabbit I caught had twisted around so violently in the trap that its legs were hardly recognizable, but it was still alive. I had to shoot it with a pellet gun several times to put it out of its misery. Ever since then, I've hated leg-hold traps and what they do to animals. Luckily, they've been banned in my state. I also deplore the activity of hunting for furs and trophies. I've seen it up close. Hell, I've done it. Never again. Never again.

The only reason I would ever hunt again is to feed or clothe myself. I even have mixed feelings about eating meat, but right now I can't afford to change my diet too much (diabetes).

57. I don't live in severely cold temps, so I would never attempt
to shame anyone who chooses to wear fur. But I'll never wear it. I don't care where I live. I don't want to have anything to do with that. Many years ago, I bought a beautiful fake beaver-look coat. Gorgeous. But I rarely got to wear it when I lived further north and even less now.

96. what's the difference between fur and a leather jacket?
or belt? or shoes?

I guess it's okay to kill ugly animals right?

Seriously, where's the outrage over leather?

And it seems to me that if you aren't a 100% vegan/vegetarian you have no room to criticize someone who wears a leather jacket/fur coat because you partake in the slaughter of animals to eat.

Killing animals is just that, no matter whether it's garments or food, ugly or cute.

And if you have a problem with that, then don't eat meat or buy fur coats.

99. For me, the difference is more aesthetic.
Leather isn't a status symbol, but fur in the lower 48 is. Fur is tacky looking and just screams "Look at me!!! I want you to notice that I'm a member of the affluent class." I don't feel that way about all status symbols, because some of them actually have a function, like a sports car. But fur is all about the vanity, and nothing more, unless you're near the arctic circle.

I don't think most people aren't as impressed as the fur wearers imagine they are. Personally, I think they are vulgar.

100. i see your point
i don't suppose i ever thought of fur as a status symbol, though it clearly is.

i would never wear fur because i think it looks hideous.

Do you think the affluent say "oh, only poor people hate fur because they can't afford it?"

i'd imagine they do.

104. well both are bad but there is are levels of evil
leather is bad because, besides being the skin of cattle, it increases the profit margin of slaughtering cows but the difference between leather and fur is that animals killed for their fur are killed solely for their fur. I am not talking about small time trapping in which the meat is also eaten, I am talking big time fur farms
