Who's Your Favorite Singer ... That's No Longer Alive?
Karen Carpenter? Cass Elliott? John Denver? Minnie Riperton? John Lennon? Patsy Cline? Johnny Cash? Tammy Wynette? Jim Morrison? Janis Joplin? Curt Cobain? Jerry Garcia?

Those are just a few that come to my mind... which ones do YOU admire and enjoy listening to the most?

59. In 1968, I was a college student.
Phil was a big Eugene McCarthy supporter.

Phil came to Valparaiso University, in Valparaiso, Indiana, where I was a student. He appeared at the McCarthy headquarters, which was just a storefront with a big attic loft. He sang in the loft, and we all sat on the floor and listened. It was strictly a word of mouth event, and there were fewer than forty people there.

I was a Bobby Kennedy supporter, but who would pass up a chance to hear Phil Ochs in a setting like that? He talked and sang, and told us to vote for McCarthy. Shit, I wasn't even old enough to vote. And Bobby was killed a few weeks later.

It was an amazing evening. I spoke to him, and he spoke to me, but I can't remember what we said.

Do you remember that he was involved in the convention fracas in Chicago in 1968? He testified at the Chicago 7 trial. He and Abbie Hoffman bought a pig from a farmer, and tried to nominate it for president.

I always wished that I could go back in time, to that loft. I would have told him not to kill himself. The war would end, but we would need him at the turn of the century. Worse things were going to happen. Even if his voice was old and whiskey soaked, we would still need him to sing louder than the guns. We would need him here to sing Cops of the World to my kids, because nothing has changed. I cry when I think about it.

I have played his music for my kids. I tell them that I grew up in interesting times so that they would not have to. It sucks that we have to do this all over again. We could sure use Phil.

102. think of how much more music there might have been
he was a leading and musically progressive voice in the community that largely defined popular music well into the early 80's. Perhaps it would have been less insipid had he lived longer.

Great singer and an adventurous musician.

I also thought of Frank Zappa, but I miss him more as a philosopher than as a singer.

And Patsy Cline. There isn't a gay bar in the world that doesn't have her on the jukebox.

70. My list or the thread? If the latter, I have no idea. Probably because
they were more great songwriters than great singers, at least in most people's eyes (ears?).

83. Joey Ramone is definitely the first singer that comes to mind.
Next would be Kurt Cobain. And believe it or not, Sid Vicious was a good singer too. I especially liked his versions of "Something Else" and "Come on Everybody" a lot.
