Poll question: Got a strong stomach? The Battle of the GDR fast-foods
Edited on Sat Jul-30-05 05:00 PM by Kellanved
The Ketwurst: a sausage in a bun; the communist Hot Dog. Designed by a team of young nourishment specialists, the supply-solution "ketwurst" was a winner at the 3rd "young masters" expo in 1977.
Additional man-power went into developing adequate buns and a high-tech machine to create the holes for the sausages.

The Grilletta: A patty made from ground meat(mostly), served inside a roll. 'nuff said.

The Goldbroiler: In an attempt to reduce the average socialistic citizen's hunger for the expensive and unhealthy pork and beef, large-scale chicken farms were introduced during the early 70s.
Along with that, big stylish restaurants selling fried chicken - Goldbroiler- at hip places were opened to raise the acceptance for chicken meat. It worked splendidly - within a few months chicken was an article in high demand and low supply.
The pork and beef consumption wasn't influenced by it , though.

The Currywurst:
Fried sausage in ketchup, topped with yellow curry powder and onions - a west-German dish copied by a few entrepreneurs in the GDR. In total, there were three places selling Currywurst in the GDR(AFAIK).

Ambrosia, I tell you. It's not up to the Döner, but a good Currywurst is among the best things a greasy stand can sell.

5. Most socialistic is definitely the ketwurst...
food designed by a committee of "nourishment specialists"? Can't beat that.

The Goldbroiler looks to be the most edible.
