I really don't care about Natalee Holloway
Edited on Sat Jul-30-05 12:03 AM by MrScorpio
I know that I'm not the only one.

I'm sure that there are a lot of people out there who think that there a lot more important things to be concerned about.

Sure, the whole deal is tragic, but is this more important than, let's say... This?

Make sure that you read the very last line.

1. I don't get it
Instead of having headlines that say "Missing in Aruba: Day 50something" on the Cable News channels, why don't they have headlines that say "Missing in Afganistan: Day 1412" and have daily reports on how the search for Osama bin Laden is going.

3. It's not that I don't care...
But there's certainly nothing that I (or the American public) can do to help in this case. Not to mention that the frequent new stories (Yup. Still nothing happening. Back to you, Greta) aren't really news.

6. Well said.
I think it's absolutely horrible and I wish there was something I could do, but it is not really national news.

7. It's not that I don't care but jeezus
I'd feel the same if she was a Black, Brown, or Asian American who chose to go on vacation. She is innocent but there are millions of innocents that no one cares about.
One person in Aruba while our soldiers are dying everyday. Nobody gives a shit about them.
Don't blame and start hating us blonde, light eyed women. We are NOT in charge.

9. Approximately 125 U.S. troops have died in Iraq since she went missing
And all put together they haven't received the news attention that this one missing tourist has gotten. Truly pathetic.

that there is only one missing person in america? :eyes:

yea, its sad. its local news at best. there are missing children locally that get less coverage than she does, and hell, i actuially have a chance of spotting the missing local kids around town. give the poor kid from the wrong side of town some airtime, he only went missing 10 miles away, i have a chance of runnin into him.

13. It is only an important LOCAL story, in Alabama and Aruba
Edited on Sat Jul-30-05 08:42 AM by El Fuego
Why do we have to hear about this night after night? It is blatant sensationalism. People have disappeared who are not pretty young blond girls and they get no attention whatsoever.

14. Another low point in the real news cycle ... and abusive to Aruba
Their economy depends on tourism, and their image is unfairly damaged by this single crime.

Look at the rate most murders are solved in any urban jurisidiction.

It is all about pretty blond girls on vacation.

15. I am thinking this started in the 90's
Where there is a story that totally domininates the news that really has no effect on life for many.

OJ, Jon Benet, Chandra Levy, Elian Gonzalez, MJ, Terri Sciavo, on the list goes.

This has been the dumbing down of America. I like to watch BBC news, or PBS, because this stuff doesn't get mentioned on there.

It is not that I don't feel for the parents, and the kid. It is more, really a question of how useful the coverage is when it goes on for months. All these would have been an interesting secondary story that lasted a week, with periodic updates.

But, for now and probably the future, we will deal with these types of stories, and stories about how you can die, whether it is by terrorist, car, restaurant, and other things we would never imagine if it weren't for the "news" plugging it at us.

16. Natalee Who?
I refuse to give the network and cable porn news any of my time. I get my news from The Daily Show and the internet. So, the positive thing is, I had no idea who you were talking about when this came up. The same method worked for Amber Frey and the runaway bride. Don't know a thing about either one of them, too-and I couldn't be happier.

17. Yeah Natalee who is right.
Before this thread I hadn't even heard the name. This is a tragic story. But it's not a national front-page story. That is unless you're looking for anything at all to bury this government's screw ups.
