RIP, Trinity
I just got into the office.

When I woke up this morning, Streak kept coming into the bathroom whining and wanting me to pet her -- rubbing against my legs as I was standing at the sink.

If you know Streak, you would know that that is w-a-y abnormal behavior for her.

Something told me to check on Trinity. Last night she was acting real strange -- didn't want me to pick her up and wouldn't leave the dining room. There are covers on the chairs in there, and the cats hide under the chairs from time to time.

I started calling her, and nothing. I was on my way to the front of the house and there she was, lying very still.

I touched her to see if she was breathing and nothing.

I called the vet and they told me to bring her in ASAP.

She was DOA.

The vet was very puzzled, because he had just seen her on the 15th, and she was pronounced very fit and healthy.

I'm not taking this too well -- the only reason I came to work is because I don't want to go home.

The vet is asking for $200 to do an autopsy. I don't know if I want him to do that. I'll call him later today after I decide.

I can't stop crying.

Trinity was the sweetest cat ever. She was named for the Matrix character because of the way she was always diving and flipping around in mid air.

RIP, Trin.

I can understand your not wanting to have an autopsy done, but if you have the money, please do consider it. It's very worrisome that she died so unexpectedly after having just been pronounced healthy. There might be a health risk to your other cat(s). And it is only Trinity's body, after all. Trinitiy's soul--the essence that made her such a beloved companion--has moved on. If it turns out to be a problem that's communicable to other pets, I'm sure Trinity would not want her dealth to be in vain if she could help her family.

You need another hug. My thoughts are with you and all the beings in your home.

If you can afford it, get the autopsy done. If for no other reason, then because it will ease your mind--it's somehow easier to accept a death from a known cause than a sudden, mysterious death, in my experience.

Sorry to hear about your loss. If you don't do the autopsy you will always wonder if you did something wrong and you don't need that on your back.

Did she ever go outside? If so, you have to have it done because someone might have done something to her.

We had something similar happen with our shar-pei a couple of years ago, except he had been acting fine the night before. He'd had an aneurysm in his sleep.

Our only comfort was that he died easy, safe and warm at home. It's cold comfort at best, but at least he didn't suffer. Trinity died like that, too; in her "spot", at home, with her companions and you. That cat was loved by you very much, and she knew it. When her time came, she was in safe and familiar surroundings, with a minimum of suffering. We should all be so lucky.

77. A BIG hug for Cat Woman
Edited on Tue Jul-26-05 11:38 AM by KzooDem
I'm really saddened to hear about your cat :-(

My dog was diagnosed with lymphoma last month and was given about a month to two to live. At least I have the benefit of knowing it's coming. It must be hard to have your pet die so unexpectedly.

Thinking about you and sending you a big cyber-hug. I'll make my monthly contribution to the Humane Society in honor of Trinity.

i'm so sorry to hear this!

i can't imagine what you're going through right now, honestly.

i can't offer advice on the autopsy, b/c that does seem rather expensive, but i CAN say it'd likely settle things a lot for you. i know if i were in your situation and it seemed to be something mysterious, i'd want to know, if for no other reason than to make sure my OTHER cats are out of harm's way.

i bet your other kitties are pretty upset and confused right now, too.

again, i'm terribly sorry for your loss, and will be thinking of you today.

please keep us updated on whether or not you decide to do the autopsy, and also how you and your other cats are doing.

how old was trinity?

79. Damn, Catwoman. I am very sorry.

How horrible. If you do get the autopsy, you'll know if she was contagious in any way (though I'd be surprised since they're all indoor kitties, all the time) and you'll know what happened so you don't feel guilty (and you shouldn't, but sometimes it's a hard emotion to avoid).

One of our cats, many years ago, appeared the picture of health. But one afternoon we got back from errands and he was stretched out on the stair landings, barely alive. We took him to the vet and he died; apparently he'd had a tumor in his stomach and it burst through the stomach wall and he bled to death. It was better to know what had happened, and that there really was no way for us (or the vet) to know w/o specifically looking for it.

Anyway, I am truly sorry.

82. Trin was only three years old
the vet says she may have had a heart attack, or a brain tumor -- things that wouldn't show during a regular checkup, but rather during a cat scan. As I said, he had just seen her on the 15th, and she was the picture of health.

I feel so bad. I loved her so much. She was so friendly and lively.

I got her and Streak at four months old, and they just took over the house from the outset. Especially Trinity.

I need to go home because I can't concentrate on anything right now. And I have a splitting headache from crying so much.

in his leg. There was nothing I could do for him but ease him out of life. It truly did me in. There probably would have been nothing you could do if you were standing over her. I am so sorry, honey. Time is the only helper for this. I thought I would NEVER be able to stop crying over my Tippy but it will ease as time goes by. Just wail to God now. It helps.

139. It may have been cardiomyopathy (HCM)
my beloved Peewee died from HCM just two years ago. It's a genetic disease that often strikes down cats from age 2-5 (Peewee was 15-extremely old for a cat carrying the gene). It doesn't show up during routine exams. Please consider the autopsy; if it is HCM, then you can have her sibling examined. There are medications that can help if it's detected early enough.

My tortie foster kitten is at the vet right now; she came down with a violent case of coccidia Sunday night and nearly died. She's still not out of the woods, but there's still hope. I've got the others on Albon to keep them from suffering the same fate. I know that thinking about an autopsy is very difficult now, but please consider it.If it's something contagious or hereditary, I'm sure you'll want to know.

86. Trinity and your other kitties bring lots of joy to my kids...
I am so sorry for your loss.

I just wanted to let you know that the pictures of your kitties brings smiles and laughter to my 2 preschool-aged girls.

They love the winking pictures and they practically howl when Trinity sticks out her purple tongue.

There have been a couple times--when our kid have had boo boos--and they need cheering up. I ask them, "Do you want to see the winking kitties and the kitty with the purple tongue, on the computer?".

I'd search DU for one of your messages, and sure enough--the kitties would provide a much-needed distraction.

I just wanted to share that Trinity and your other kitties are loved by many others--and that we feel your loss and sadness too.

It's so hard to lose a pet. I don't know what would happen if my one of my cats died. I'm so sorry! I can't believe this... the most terrible things happen to the best cats. I'm praying for you and Trinity.
I've had a close call with one of my cats, named Carmel. A few years ago, I found him at the bottom of the stairs, and he wasn't moving. We took him to a vet, and he figured out that Carmel had swallowed a piece of dental floss that twisted around in his stomach and intestines and almost killed him. We had to pay $2000 to get him right. So I don't know exactly what you're going through, but I have a little experience.
IMO, it might be best to have an autopsy done. That way you can know why, and make sure, if it was preventable, it doesn't happen to your other kitties.
Hang in there....

I recently lost my cat Nosey and my dog Max within 3 months. Two pets that were just like family. And my beautiful German Shepperd Ember the year before.

I am not sure of how life works sometimes, but I know there is a Heaven where we will all reunite with out loved ones again.
All three sometimes visit my dreams and they are healthy and happy.
It seems real while I sleep and I always remember the dream when I wake up.... And I smile.

108. I feel so guilty
I knew she wasn't feeling good last night, but I thought it was just the valium she had been taking. She was so listless, but didn't want to be bothered. Being around cats most of my life, I know to leave them alone when they don't want to be bothered.

Now every where I look I think of her.

Streak keeps walking around looking for her and calling for her.

It's no telling how long she was laying there. I feel so bad.

I left work early and went to the vet's to pay for the autopsy, and to collect her pet carrier. They had to take it apart to get her body out.

This is such a rotten day

Edited on Tue Jul-26-05 03:46 PM by BrklynLiberal
She knew the end was near and that is why she stayed where she did. You know how they are.
I would be willing to bet lots of money that you gave her a wonderful life, and that anyone of us would be thrilled to come back as one of your cats when it is our time to pass.
She is not suffering any more. She is at peace. It is okay to feel sad and to miss her, but guilt is such a pointless emotion. Don't allow yourself to get lost in it.
If you want to pay tribute to her..(and I am sure I don't have to really tell you this) the best way would be to rescue a little kitty from a shelter and shower her with the love and care that would have been focused on Trinity.
Us animal people are such easy marks for little furbabies in need.

128. I've felt what you fell quite often lately
I've had three kittens die this year. The first one(the one included in the sig), the smallest, was gasping, had an eye swollen shut, and we took it to the vet. the vet predicted that it had half an our left, with a heart rate of 67beats/min, when it should of been in the low-mid 100's, and was euthanized.
A week ago, "Patches", named after a calico from my toddler hood days, died, without warning, and I lost it of the reincarnated cat that I was reunited with for just one day.
the next day, a kitten fell sick, and had excessive swelling between the tail and ribs(I suspect from infection of the eye spread). I comforted it all day, and in her final hours, it seemed paralyzed from the front legs down. at 2:00 that night, it was gasping like the first kitten. 50 minutes later, it asphyxiated in my hand, and was severely dehydrated, as her tongue was swollen to the size of an adult cats tongue. before we buried her, we named her Nalah, after the female lion in "Lion King".

To you, CatWoman, and to Male, Female, Streak, and Trinity::cry:

I love your cat stories, sometimes they make me wish I had cats of my own (only sometimes! i'm not admitting to full fledged catdom yet). Trinity was a really lucky cat to have such a proud owner, and one who treated her very well! :)

Here's a  for you :bounce:

Love,
Maggie

142. Don't worry- she'll be back.
She still has eight more lives ahead of her. You'll meet up with her again.

144. Oh, CatWoman!
No, how horrible! I'm so deeply, deeply sorry for this - I can only imagine how you must be feeling.

I'd recommend that the autopsy is completely your choice, but I'd also suggest you might consider perhaps skipping the autopsy and making a donation of equal or lesser amount it would have cost to your local SPCA or Humane League or kitty rescue in Trinity's honor. I did this when we had one of our babies pass on last year and it really makes you feel good, and memorializes your baby. Just a thought :) Thank goodness it doesn't seem like Trinity suffered since she was so healthy so recently. Most likely it was something that came quickly and she did not suffer. No doubt she knows how much you love her and miss her, and she will be waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge!

You poor thing. Please know you're in my thoughts and prayers - PM me if you need anything at all or just to talk...or need a shoulder to lean on :)

148. Death - It's either mean or it's arbitrary. And either way
I am freaked out. :hide:
Why is it always night when we talk about this?

One of my dogs was whining in the basement this morning, instead of coming up the stairs. It took me a while to figure out that one of her toenails was caught in her collar. A couple of nervous moments but not nearly as traumatic as your day. I feel for you.

150. I'm so very sorry that you lost your beloved Trinity...
It's so hard to say goodbye to our cross-species friends. Thanks so much for giving Trinity a loving home.

I know that you're grieving, but make sure to give your other cats plenty of extra love, because they're grieving too.

Give yourself time, and always hold Trinity close to your heart.

It'll be rough -- all good thoughts to you --

152. I'm very sorry to hear about your kitty, it's very sad.
I lost one of mine last winter.

Now, as to the vet...

do you *want* an autopsy, or is it the vet that wants it? If it's the latter, tell him to do it on his own dime. My vet had suggested it to me when Tia died, she had diabetes, but I'm pretty damn sure that is not why she died. She was having these funky seizures, and 12 hours later, no one had figured it out, and they were happening every few minutes or so. I had her put down. She had been through so much the past year, I couldn't keep doing it to her. I miss her so. But the vet already wanted $120.00 to put her to sleep plus cremation costs, and to add another $200 for an autopsy, when it was the vet that really wanted to know, I just couldn't do it. I said, she's gone, there's nothing else I can do at this point. Yeah, it would have been nice to know, but...I just couldn't afford it at that point.

153. I'm so sorry for your loss
but if you can possibly afford it, have the necropsy done. If you don't, you will always wonder if you should have seen something, should have known it was coming, could have prevented it.

That sudden, it is unlikely it was anything you could control, but you aren't going to really believe that until you know for sure.

in case whatever it was is communicable and the other cats haven't had it.

What a shock! Wow! Take comfort in knowing that you gave her a good life, full of love, and that she loved you right back. Give Streak some extra love; you can help each other cope with Trinity's loss. BTW, I love the picture of her sticking out her tongue.
