Tech Question About An .avi File
I downloaded an .avi file, and when I go to play it, my media player throws an error and shuts down. Even when I open the directory where the file is, my Windows shuts down.

Any thoughts?

1. Yes, delete it, probably corrupted

like, if it hurts when you bang your head against the wall, stop banging your head against the wall

2. right, right... Probably corrupted.
Try another download after deleting. You COULD try another player, but if WMP is up to date, it's corrupted.

6. You need to install what is called a video codec.
Try install the Xvid codec or Divx codec. Both of these are popular.
Your windows explorer is trying to preview the file and it can't without the proper video codec. Hope this helps.

7. Have played .AVI files before without problems?
If so, then this one is corrupted, if not, what elvisbear said

8. Get BSPlayer
http://www.bsplayer.org/

It can often deal with corrupted files that other players will choke on.

It's worth a try.
