any other people on dialup? (DU feature idea)
I'm still on dialup. I suppose I could afford the monthly bill for cable internet, but since I live a bit off the main road, the cable company wants $2,000 to run the line. I think that's kind of steep, and so far refuse to pay it.

I think it would be nice if DU had some way to turn off graphics for certain threads. Now, if I'm going to view a "post your picture" thread I would of course want the graphics enabled. But if it's a very hot "normal" conversational thread with 200 posts, I don't really want to wait 15 minutes, or whatever, for it to load all the avatars and stuff.

I realize I can go to "options" to disable graphics, or disable them in the browser. But I think it would be nice if there was a "per-thread" way of easily doing this.

But if there are not many dial-up users left, it probably wouldn't be something Elad would want to spend energy on.

Just something I was thinking about.

1. Yeah, still on dial-up...
... and get a little tired of loading the multiple 80-100K images in some people's sig lines in big threads. The avatars are small potatoes.

2. if there are more than a couple of us...
So you think we should suggest my idea to Elad? Heck, I would help him code it.

3. try using Opera
and disable images. I know you have sussed that trick of disabling images but my experience of graphics-free browsing with Opera has been good speedwise.

To get a little more speed you could also disable any processes that initialise at start-up>>>

START_RUN_MSCONFIG (type the latter command into the RUN field in lower case) then compare the list of processes on the start-up tab with a list of known processes for your setup.

8. I've got Opera installed
But I'm running Linux, so msconfig doesn't apply.

I've tried disabling graphics, but that doesn't really satisfy me. I usually want graphics. It's just the REALLY long threads (which tend to be very interesting) that I wish I could easily get a graphics free version.

6. nope
I live slightly too far from the central switching office. I think that's what they call it.

9. yes
I have both links and lynx installed. But it's a hassle to switch from browser to browser. What I'm suggesting is a "graphics-free" link to a thread.

12. you can disable graphics on DU
And you can disable graphics with your browser. But what I'm suggesting is a separate link (a tiny bit of screen space) for a graphics-free link to a thread. And like I said, this may affect such a tiny percentage of DU'ers that it is pointless or futile, as the case may be. :)

14. yep, I know he could do it
And I would even do it for him, if he's using a language I understand like Python. But there's probably not many of us DU'ers that have this problem these days. Just throwing something out there.

Have fun with all those cool Canadians enigmatic! ;)

18. Understandable
But I was being at least partially facetious anyway, haha. But try PMing Elad with your suggestion, because it is a pretty good suggestion.

17. Accelerator
You always get a accelerator which speeds up the connection by crunching images so they'll load faster
