11. Scallop turnips and fry them in bacon grease with onions...
when the turnips are brown smother them until tender. Add crumbled bacon and sour cream. :)

5. You're so going to hell for that one
What's wrong with parsnip? Potatoes aren't good enough for you? Huh? Huh? You know, when I was your age, we walked six miles in the snow, uphill and against the wind both ways, with only baked potatoes in our pockets to keep us warm. And we liked it that way! We didn't need any of your fancy tubers!

once you run out of turnips and all the other good root vegetables.

7. Oh Boy
Growing up dirt poor my favorite meal consisited of pinto beans -we called them soup beans - mashed potatoes and TURNIP greens. And if we were lucky enough to find some we seasoned those greens with apple cider vinegar and tabasco sauce. Of course with corn bread, 'maters, onions and whatever else the good earth provided.

18. I can stand turnip roots
diced in little chunks, as a "seasoning" for the greens. I'm inclined to agree with you on this one.

16. You must be thinking of potatoes
Edited on Tue Jul-19-05 10:51 AM by Modem Butterfly
Potatoes save lives. Most people, on the other hand, are deathly allergic to turnips. They even try to warn you off with their taste and color! Nature's way of saying "Stay away!"

;)

23. No, they're correct. It happened in WWI, too...
By the winter of 1917, the supply of potatoes had run out and the only real alternative was turnips. This is why the winter of 1916 to 1917 is known as the "Turnip Winter".
