That is just wrong. On the other hand, fuel conservation seems as good an excuse to ignore chores as any other....

3. Wow! How big is your yard?
In the early 80's I charged $10 for a half acre. I also only charged $1.00/hr for babysitting, although I probably would have done that for free. Talk about an easy job!

$50 is outrageous unless you have a giant yard.

11. We thought that it was bad last year
When the neighbor boy charged us $15 to mow our lawn. It takes about a half hour with a gas self propelled mower which he was using. If we let our grass grow to long, our landlord cuts it and sends us a bill for $30 or we could pay $30 per month extra whether or not any grass is mowed.

4. I used to have one of those old-fashioned mowers
Remember the ones with the spiraling, rotating blades that you had to push around the yard, and then rake up all the clippings? I used to use one of those as a kid, and then for God only knows what reason my mom had to buy a riding mower from Sears, for a yard that was less than an acre. To this day I still don't know what she was thinking.

10. We have one still in our garage
At our first duplex, mowing the lawn with that was not too difficult. The resistance that I experienced in pushing it was not much greater than pushing a shopping cart in most grocery stores.
When we moved to our current duplex, I mowed the lawn a few times with it (we moved in the early fall), but bought a gas powered mower in the spring. Even though the lawn was only a little bigger, the grass was much different, much thicker at the individual blade level and clumped much thicker. I was still running at the time and mowing with that mower for 30 minutes was like running a 5 or 6 mile race. In some areas of the lawn, if I stopped and put all my weight on the mower, it would not move. My husband, being much stronger and twice my weight, could mow with it a little easier, but had wanted a gas mower to begin with. We got the rotating blade mower on the condition that I mow the lawn.
It has been hot and dry here for the past couple weeks. That has significantly slowed the lawn growth and we haven't had to mow much. Are we sick and wrong for being glad that our grass is browning so that we don't have to mow?

8. $2.73? That's insane!
Where are you located?

It's still "cheap" here in MO at $2.30/gallon.
