Mine is El Paso by Marty Robbins. It's a beautiful song.

1. Java by Al Hirt
I hated that song growing up. I still kinda do. I think it's only a couple of steps away from the Bird Dance.

2. Not a song, but an entire album -
The Pearl Fishers, an opera by Bizet. It's the only opera recording I own, and the music is absolutely stunning.

3. Loggins & Messina
"Angry Eyes"

While I don't dislike them on the whole, I definitely feel their hits were badly overexposed-- if I never hear "Your Mama Don't Dance" again it'll be too soon! And Loggins' songwriting persona is pretty wussy. (Messina's considerably more substantial, and if you don't think so, check out his work in the early years of Poco, which he co-founded.)

Anyway, "Angry Eyes" rocks. The basic verse/chorus melody is admirably tense, and lends itself to the harmony singing they did so well, but the real fun for me is the episodic instrumental breaks, with interesting supporting melodies of their own. (Have you noticed my marked preference for instrumental music?)

"Smokey Joe's Cafe", by the Coasters, also "Wango Tango".

There's nothing wrong with Smokey Joe's Cafe, I just don't have a huge interest in doo-wop. But I love the syncopated rhythm, and the sleazy sax solo.

I've loved Wango Tango since I was about 12. Even bought the 7" single (b/w Scream Dream). It's just so unbelievably terrible that it's great.

"What you gotta do is pretent your face is a Maserati"? Take that, Walt Whitman!
