Dog Survives Hit By Police Cruiser, Taser, Gun Shots
<snip>

MANCHESTER, Conn. --A very tough dog remains on the loose despite police efforts to shoot it, strike it with a police cruiser and zap it with a stun gun.

Police said the dog and a second pit bull, which was injured and captured, posed a risk to people in a public park Wednesday.

The man versus canine confrontations began Wednesday morning when two police officers went to help an animal control officer after receiving a report that the dogs were charging her at Center Springs Park.

The dogs again charged, and one of the officers fired his gun in self-defense, police said. The gunfire didn't stop the dogs, which turned and ran toward a town recreation building at 100 Lodge Drive, where the summer camp was going on inside, police said. Several more officers were sent to the park.

An officer pulling into the parking lot then saw both animals running near a young child and an adult who were walking.

The officer struck the dogs with his police car. One dog was knocked down, while the second one ran into a wooded section of the park. The dog that was incapacitated was in stable condition.

Police found the second dog in a yard near the park. Officers used a Taser gun, which fires electrically charged probes. The guns can typically transmit 50,000 volts of electricity.

Still, the animal was able to run at the officers before fleeing again.

1. Why are Pit Bulls still legal?
I have a good friend who was mauled by a pit bull while he and his girlfriend were out walking their dog.

4. Because banning them is an idiotic reaction to the acts of the few
Sorry about your friend, but it's not the fault of the entire breed. It's like saying more criminals use Glocks to rob/murder, so we should ban Glock firearms. Many guns can be used in crime, it's all a matter of who's hands it's in. Same with the pit bull. My Great Dane can do more damage than my pit bull can. They're raised right, so the liklihood that either will turn or attack unprovoked is very slim.

12. That's what's funny about "pit bulls"
Lots of folks lump any mid to large sized, wide statured, deep chested, wide jawed dog with an ounce of bully breed in him/her into the pit bull category.

Here, play "find the pit bull"

Now she has a Pitt Bull/English Mastiff mix. I know the breed very well. They are shorter dogs who are very stocky and stout! The stouter they are, the more money they can get for the dog.

18. And I can show you a boxer mixed with beagle
that has been called a pit bull by animal control and vets. So?

Short, stocky and stout describes, what...a dozen breeds of dog?

19. Sure. I am not saying it doesn't. But that
is what the breed is. I was describing the breed. And I was not the one who said the breed should be demolished.

20. I realize that, and I wasn't attacking you/your post
My point is that the general description you gave is one that many people kneejerk into believing a dog is a pit/pit mix and needs to be destroyed/banned/demolished.

21. Well I know that the breed that is reported with
the most bites yearly isn't the pit. It is the Cocker Spaniel. But I guess if you have had a bad experience with any breed, it can alter your opinion on that breed.

25. What "breed"? The AKC has no "pit bull" defined.
And they are the largest canine organization in the world.

Who gets to decide what a "pit bull" is?

10. you never see these stories about Golden Retrievers.
The pit bull is an intrinsically vicious dog. Of course any dog can be trained to be vicious or not. But the difference is most dogs have to be taught to be vicious; pit bulls have to be taught not to be.

17. That's not true.
Pit bulls don't have to be taught not to be vicious. Matter of fact, sitting in my rescue, right now, are 4 pits that were all terribly abused. Not a damn one of them has ever shown any viciousness towards me, my visitors, other dogs, cats nor each other. They're all mature, and they've been with me for anywhere from 18 mos to 4 mos.

If you can show me a few scientific research projects, done over time, that prove your point, I sure would appreciate it.

Edited on Thu Jul-14-05 10:59 AM by Shell Beau
but he probably knows what is awaiting him if he is caught. Which is sad b/c he didn't ask to be born a vicious dog. Humans bred them down to be that way (at least from what I understand).

6. Right, and that is a breed that needs to go away
Animal control departments all accross the country should start programs to get rid of them. Or there should be such tough requirements for owning one that no-one will.

charge a whole lot extra for people who have high risk dog breeds such as Chows, German Shepherds, Dobermans, and some will not insure homes that have pits.

Then we can just eliminate each breed in succession as it gains a bad rep. I've had blood drawn on me by more toy breeds than I care to think about - never once been bitten by a pit, or a chow, or a rottie, or...
