This little lady is what's left of the litter that was born under my house. She stayed behind because she won't let people touch her, and had no chance of adoption as long as she acted like that. I'm sort of foster-momming her now. We've gotten her to come inside a couple of times, then she lets us pet her.

5. Take heart about the shyness

We wound up keeping a kitten out of a litter born stray in the neighborhood under the same conditions, except we had to practically starve her out of the woods, she was so dispositionally skittish (it took about a week! all the others would readily interactive with people and hence adoptable). Well, that kitten is now about 15 pounds, named Fiona, in the room as I type this, and a real purr-bag around family. It took her a couple of months, but boy am I glad it worked out as it did.

6. Oh believe me, I know

I have three others that basically got here the same way. Not really the shy part, but all of the rest. The problem is, the other girls don't like the little visitor. Bear thinks she's cool, he's made a friend.

7. I've got a mama and three kittens living in our back yard.

They're about 8 weeks old. I don't hold out much hope for socializing mama, but the babies will play with my hand and let me pet them while they're eating.

If you have any tricks to get them more human friendly I'd love to hear them.

8. Well, lucky for us,

Mom is friendly. We put food just inside the door, Mom comes in, baby follows. Once she gets inside she lets us pet her. Outside, she runs.

9. I wish I could do that.

I spend about forty five minutes every day wiggling my fingers under the car to attract the kittens and hoping that mama doesn't try to disembowel my hand.

She's pure bred Chicago Alley cat, and tough as nails.

10. The first day that we saw them

Mom wasn't real happy with us. The babies all had goopy eyes, and we were trying to get them from under the trailer when she came up. We got our pet carrier, put some food in it, she went in, we shut the door. shWe took care of five sets of eyes, released the babes, released Mom, and all was well after that. Mom was skin and bones, trying to nurse. She's finally getting some meat on her now.

11. Our mama was right at the brink too.

The kids were a bit dodgy as well. We started feeding them about two weeks ago, and they've made amazing progress.

Mama's given me a couple of good smacks, but I think she's starting to trust me with her babies. She'll wander off and leave me alone with them now.

I'm trying to get to a point where I can load all three of the kittens into a box and hand them out to the people I've got lined up to take them. I don't think mama would be adoptable, so I hesitate to attempt to grab her. I'll just keep feeding her after I get the kids and hope that, eventually, she'll stop fantasizing about ripping my innards out.

12. It just takes time

I'm looking at this little one passed out on my living room floor now. Scribbles hisses at her if she gets anywhere near, Dora does the same. Bear digs having a little one around, he remembers the two litters he fathered and the fun they had.
