How did DUers come up with their author names?
I find myself amused of some of the names we have come up with. There are some that are easily understood and some that make me wonder what motivated the choice. Mine, im10ashus, is actually just a way of saying "I am tenacious" and I use that as my email address as well. I use it because I was told by a person that was directing me in a play a number of years ago that I was a very tenacious person and it would serve me well in my life - both on stage and off - and they were right. I know it can be both a good and bad thing to be so tenacious but it's certainly been more good than bad. So, how did my fellow DUers come up with their names and what was the reason behind it? Just curious. :-)

22. One of my so called "animal totems" is a mouse

I know, it's pagan weird shit. :-)

I don't really buy into the whole spirit animals thing at all, but I *am* small, furry and cute, so my friends liked it when I decided I was a mouse. The name kinda stuck!

Also, on a more reflective note, I think I just like the idea of small, nice things that just *WORK*. Most of the world's really stupid problems seem to me to have occurred from people trying to instigate big monolithic plans, great dreams and ideals, without thinking about gritty annoying things like consequences. Small, perhaps sometimes slightly lopsided ideas that fit nice with what's already there are, to my view, the best way forward for making the world a better place. Big Ideas sometimes work, sometimes fall RIGHT through the floor taking a lot of valuable stuff with them. This is, of course, an emormous generalisation and easily shot down, but it FEELS right to me, so I stick with it.

In summary - small is beautiful... And I walk the path of mouseness.

xxx

77. Well, actually, I don't know much about it

And most of the stuff I know comes from knowing other pagans/wicca/chaos magic types.

But these are sometimes worth a browse or two...

http://www.paganlibrary.com/

Lots of stuff here

http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/08590a.htm

Very interesting, mostly about Jewish Cabala, which is a sort of "mental mapping" of the world and the human soul, if you buy that. It's an interesting model to me, nothing much more, but then interesting models can be very useful...

http://www.lysator.liu.se/occult/

Not too bad

Be aware, a LOT of this stuff is complete rubbish... :-)

Mostly I cherry pick what I like. It's mind-scaping, really, primarily I'm an atheist. I think of the occult as a hobby for me rather than a belief system.

119. actually Buddhism is based on the 'Four Noble Truths' which are the way
out of Samsara. the goal is to reach Nirvana... A state of endless bliss..reguardless of what happens and if you choose.. an end to cyclical rebirth.

The Four Noble Truths are the first teachings of the Buddha after enlightenment, which means "Awakened One". the goal is to become 'Awake'.

"The Four Noble Truths, Diagnose the human condition and prescribe a treatment: the path tword to Nirvana. it is all very logical

1/ that all all life entailssuffering...Unsatisfactoriness, unhappiness, sadness, anger, physical and mental pain disease problems.. and that even the positive elements are transitory. Nothing enherently exists.

2/ simply that the cause of suffering is 'desire', the sanskrit word is actually "Thrist"

3/ the 3rd truth is that if there is a cause there is a cure. If you remove the cause of the effect....

4/the formula to remove desire is the Noble Eight fold Path..which is a goal oriented process. Buddhism is an individual process, you are resopnsible for

if you are interested in the details you can check out a great site http://www.buddhanet.net there is lots of info there. or PM me.

the Noble Eight fold path is someshat like the 10 comandmants, except it was brought by a man and is more like the 8 suggestions.
it is up to the individual.

To really get a Great perspective on this, go to the local video store and check out the movie..."The Little Buddha", with Keanu Reeves, Chris Isaak and Bridget Fonda. A Bernardo Bertolucci film, by MIRAMAX..a really sweet little film, a story within a story within a story

140. actually it isnt depressing, it just says things arent as they seem, they
provide a method based on meditatio that clears the mind and in my opinion opens up other mental process the expand the consciousness beyond regular conventional thought..

I feel Buddhism is like an A.A. program for people addicted to conventional thought. there is a Loud mind without the ability to actually solve the problems it sees... because the real source of the problems is beyond the comprehension of that mind... which i call the O'Riely mind or the Limbaugh mind.. the mind that actually works in this world waits patiently for you to become calm and quiet enough for you to hear it speak... or allow it to work. it takes practace and meditation

Edited on Sun Jul-10-05 09:16 AM by aka-chmeee
For Larry Niven fans, it's easy.
When I first started "discussing" politics via email with my conservative "friends" I took aka-chmeee as an insult that I knew would never be recognized. Chmeee was the name earned by a Kzin after doing a great service to his kind. Before that, he was styled by his profession...a diplomat to earth; that is, a "speaker to animals".

Edit. Does not apply to present company. HiHi.

48. It's a very long story.
For the record, I loathe the name now, it's just stupid. I wish I had changed it in the '04 amnesty.

At university some friends of mine and I used to play games over JANET, which was then possibly the finest open intranet in the UK. (And we used it to play "Descent". Hey ho.) The first time I was invited to play I needed to come up with a login nickname. I was very into indie at the time (I still like it, but I'm no longer a freak about it) and I was playing the Mansun song "Taxloss" at the time - which is a pretty catchy song. I used Taxloss as my login.

From there, Taxloss migrated into being my nick for dozens of different forums and groups - my online alter ego as it were. When I had a blog, I called it Taxloss. It's not a bad word but after 8 years of use I'm tired of it, so I'm phasing it out.

65. I picked mine because it asks a question
that can be taken at least two completely different ways depending upon how you read it.

It can either be Do you ever wonder, marvel, look at something in awe?

Or it can be read Do you ever wonder what the fuck is going on around here?

It's also from an album and a song by Shawn Phillips but unfortunately I didn't remember the title correctly when I started using it. It really should have been Do You Wonder. Oh well.

i picked mine (as most know) after a book character from one of my favorite american writers, Kurt Vonnegut, as a reminder of how bad 'civilized' war can get (Slaughterhouse-Five) and because i see myself as confused and rambling as any Vonnegut character, in these 'interesting' times we all find ourselves living in :scared:

102. Long Story LOL
I'm a 7 year veteran of the DALnet (what channels you ask? never you mind :P) and I've been a regular in the same channel since '99. It became a minor sport to come up with odd nicknames just to get people either giggling or groaning, depending on how grevious the pun was. (A few PG examples: Dan^Druph, Al^Terigo, Bill^Melaytur, Art^Kryttyk)

One night I used Salmon, and the owner of the channel couldn't stop laughing. She's one of the best and the brightest tech minds I've ever known and a truly great lady. So I chose it as a thank you and a tribute to her and all the wonderful people I've known on the DAL.

I think 1-800-I-H8-Z-GOP would be a good number for the Democratic Party." So I thought about it, changed it to its present form, and have used it on a number of websites.

get another. You start over again at zero posts, but you don't have so many that that would make a tremendous difference. If you have donated by that time, you can also ask them to transfer the donor star to the new account, but obviously in your case it makes more sense just to wait to donate until after you make the change. (Of course if you have more than one email account, you can just register the new name using that address without bothering admins, but that's a little frowned upon.)

Got worried about all of his Texas beef rancher buddies.

Stood before reporters at the Crawford Pig Farm and told everyone to eat beef, saying "I had beef for lunch today."

SO...within a day or two of that I also stumbled across DU, signed up, and became Bush_Eats_Beef.

188. "TaleWgnDg" or "Tale Wagging the Dog" . . .
Edited on Sun Jul-10-05 06:57 PM by TaleWgnDg
.

TaleWgnDg or Tale Wagging the Dog: the phrase "the tail that wags the dog" dates to the turn of the (1800s-to-1900s) century. In 1907, it appeared in Von Arnum's Fraulein Schmidt. And, F. Scott Fitzgerald used it in 1935.

The meaning is quite obvious, the subsidiary part (tail) is controlling the major part (entire dog).

In its most current usage, the case is of the "news media" creating the crisis instead of the crisis generating "news media" interest, as well as, most people's ability to swallow this fallacy all too readily.

I, then, used word play replacing "tail" with "tale" as the frosting on the cake, if you will, to complete the meaning of the phrase.

Yes, my screen-name/nickname/user-name (or as you say "author name") predates the movie, "Wag the Dog." I've had this name for more than 12 years which is why it was condensed to only nine letters because that was the limit back 12 or so years ago. Having been known as "TaleWgnDg" for all those years, I hesitate to update it to it's more understandable "Tale Wagging the Dog," although at times I do use the longer more understandable version.

.

218. Hi im10ashus!
Edited on Sun Jul-10-05 09:10 PM by TOhioLiberal
...Love that name, BTW.

My name is simple:
T stands for my home city, Toledo. Home of Tony Packo's and the Mud Hens (both made famous by actor Jamie Farr (M*A*S*H)).

Ohio should be evident ;) as my home state.

Liberal is what I am. As in, 'dye-in-the-wool' and 'bleeding heart' :)

226. I identify with the values, customs and culture of the Blue Nation
Blue parts of the country. Places like Austin, San Francisco, the Florida Gold Coast, Boston, NYC, and the many college towns in this country: that's my America.

I have no use for places like Neshoba County, Mississppi or rural Kansas. Useless flyover country as far as I'm concerned.

233. Sage3D was the very first screenname I ever had on AOL
I was trying to come up with something mystical that wasn't being over-utilized. Sage morphed into StormSage...then WindSage and OakSage and so on.

I pretty much used up all the "Sage" possibilities and then cycled a few through with a 'aje' instead of 'age'... And then I decided to use Saje as my pen name. My stuff puts a twist on mythology, plus I like to try to penetrate the myths of politics and religion, therefore I joined DU as Mythsaje.

One thing that's been stable throughout my on-line tenure...99% of my names and e-mail addresses have contained some variation of the word sage/saje.

234. Fundies cheese me off, with their constant attempts to
turn the US into a theocracy. They have a massive governmental, television, Internet, print and public presence and exert significant influence in all realms. At the same time they make the preposterous claim that they are suffering from "Anti-Christian bigotry" and trying to turn themselves into a protected class.

I also like Buffy the Vampire Slayer

I've missed a bunch of the episodes, so I'm renting the whole series in order. I'm on the beginning of Season Five, when Dawn shows up.

I got into Angel first, then Buffy. They're both great shows. I love Joss Whedon's commentary on the DVDs. You can tell he really knows his stuff and puts a lot of thought into each episode. I can't wait to finish watching the whole series. :)

"All around the world, everywhere I go
No one understands me, no one knows
What I'm trying to say.
Everywhere I go, no one understands me,
They look at me when I talk to them
And they scratch their heads
They go "What's he trying to say?"
But you...you speak my language!"

"All around the world, everywhere I go
No one understands me, no one knows
What I'm trying to say.
Even in my home town,
My friends make me write it down.
They look at me when I talk to them
And they shrug their shoulders,
They go what's he talking about?
But you...you speak my language!
Yes!

260. Well...........
One day a gal-pal and myself were lamenting the fact that we wanted to run away and do a road-trip - sort of a 'Harley Route 66' thing but knew we never would. The conversation then turned to Thelma & Louise and we decided that we weren't sophisticated enough to be them so eventually we decided that we were more like Rocky & Bullwinkle - so you know which one of us became stuck with the moose name. And my birthday is 9/25.
