Do You Dislike Hippies?
As A Liberal - I don't know why - I disdain 'Hippies' of most sorts. I don't know why. I'm sure it probably says more about me than them, but I can't help it. They just annoy the hell out of me. They have to be the most unattractive humans to ever walk the face of the earth.

And they are ridiculously self righteous on top of everything else.

BTW - I am 100% liberal but for some reason don't like hippies and know I am not alone in this.

When i was younger, anyway. I thought hippies were into sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll, plus kicking the shit out of people. A girlfriend informed me, however, that hippies are into peace and love and not kicking the shit out of people. Thankfully, I have grown up quite a bit since those days.

Who, exactly, is "ridiculously self righteous?"

If you want to say something, back it up with reasons.

Hippie is more of an attitude as far as I'm concerned, but what turns most people off, I believe, is the fashion aspect of it.

42. I like that...
to me, unattractive humans can only be judged when they open their mouths. You know what's really sad? My mom could be called physically beautiful, but over the years, she's become one of the 'pub women who starve themselves and think they look good rather than anorexic, pile on the make-up and wear skirts too short and heels too high for women their age. Inside, she's nothing but hollow--there is absolutely nothing there and it's sad. On the other hand, a lady I've 'adopted' as my mom lost her leg, couldn't pass for attractive like my birth mother could and has many health problems, but she's one of the kindest, sweetest, most beautiful women I've ever known. Frankly, I prefer genuine, real people with as little artifice as possible--THAT'S what attracts me most to others. Along that vein, yes, I like people who remind me of the hippies from the '60's and early '70's very much. :)

ever since I was very young, I've had an aversion to clean-cut men in business suits carrying briefcases. They give me the creeps. I haven't seen a real hippie since the 70's. Maybe you're mistaking today's redneck with the hippie? You know, the people who still listen to '80's metal, drink beer, smoke weed, don't vote, and sit on the couch watching tv all day until a gunshow comes to town?

Believe me - I did the tour of duty as the son of hippies - I was right smack in the middle of it.

I am not even saying it is a rational dislike - but I find "modern" hippies to be much more annoying than the 'originals' were.

And if any of you people think that there are no more 'hippies' than - umm, well, you should hang out in the bay area sometime.

The way I guess I see it - is, at least the originals were part of a sort of counterculture the current ones are just ALL about getting high meeeuhn and voting for Nader meeeuhn..

Really and truly, what on earth is wrong with some of the folks in this thread? I don't even know where to start, except maybe with the tried-and-true cliche to live and let live.

Anyone on this planet we share should be able to look like a hippie if they want. Or a businessman, or a square, or a cowboy, or a nerd, or Ward Freakin' Cleaver. It just doesn't matter, and it doesn't define who you are (or at least it shouldn't).

I just keep shaking my head and telling myself, incredulously, that this is coming from Democrats. Astounding and pitiful.

48. Hippies? My Gosh, Are There Any Real Ones Left?
I have ambiguous feelings about hippies. Many of hippies were hypocrites insofar as they were supported off their "old ladies" labor, and many of them retained ties to the corporate world or got money from relatives.

The ones I still respect were the ones who made genuine efforts to drop out and make their own way, either through organic farming, handicrafts, their art, or their labor.

Those folks still keeping up the old appearance of being hippy males as often as not seem to be younger males with severe drug and alcohol problems or with genuine mental health problems.

Obviously, hippies have by and large mostly been overwhelmed by the larger, consumption- and status-driven society. Still, it was a marvelous dream that foundered in part because of the larger society, and in part because of the less-appealing parts of human nature.

52. I try not to judge people in that way
I suppose that it is common for people to make judgements about certain types of people. This is not a very liberal thing to do. Many people are not a stereotype so you shouldn't treat them as though they are. I suppose you could be referring to people who are trying to be a stereotype. I find those people funny especially when they are trying for a look or attitude that is suppose to be individualistic and counter culture. I try to avoid judging people until I've talked to them for enough time to get a feel for them. There are wonderful people of every "type". Don't discount someone just because they have long hair or dress differently.

had a love/hate relationship with hippies. Looking back on what most of the former hippies became in the 80's, it makes me think a lot of them (not all) were hypocrites. They had some pretty cool music though.

As far as the modern pseudo-hippies, I don't really think all that much of them. That new age stuff about "life energy" and all that other crap is as ridiculous as any other kooky-ass weird religious belief. They're on the good side of most political beliefs, but that's about all I'm with them on.

I've always related to the punks more than the hippies, although I wouldn't call myself a punk either.

55. Essay: The Way of the Hippie
Here are a couple of quotes. I'd recommend reading the rest of the page, as it has some really good stuff.

Link: http://www.hippy.com/hippyway.htm

Hippy is an establishment label for a profound, invisible, underground, evolutionary process. For every visible hippy, barefoot, beflowered, beaded, there are a thousand invisible members of the turned-on underground. Persons whose lives are tuned in to their inner vision, who are dropping out of the TV comedy of American Life.
-Timothy Leary (The Politics of Ecstasy) 1967

So being a hippie is not a matter of dress, behavior, economic status, or social milieu. It is a philosophical approach to life that emphasizes freedom, peace, love and a respect for others and the earth. The way of the hippie never died. There have always been hippies from the first time society laid down rules, to Jesus, to Henry David Thoreau, to John Lennon, to you and me. I believe there’s a little hippy in all of us. It’s just been repressed by our socialization process. We need to find it and cultivate our hippie within. Only then can we reach our true potential.
Skip Stone (author of The Way of the Hippie)

60. Hypothesis: Hippies were a media invention -
granted, there was a cultural change going on in the (late) 60's and into the 70's, but "hippies" were a way the concervative media came up with to demonize the movement. And actual people claiming to be hippies were more costume-wearers than anything else.

66. No, not really....
I don't mean punk the fashion template or even a strict musical style. I mean it as believing that music and art and the systems created around that art needs to be confrontational and in a constant state of upheaval. I believe in the "punk" ideal of art provoking extreme reactions. And the fact is that in general Hippies and their music tend to be about happiness and celebration.

69. "Happiness and celebration" -
Can't have any of that, now, can we?

What's so funny about peace, love, and understanding?

74. We can have it, I just think it generates horrible art....
I think all good art comes from turmoil, pain, suffering, and misery. Or at least MOST good art. Or at least any art that I personally enjoy. Even the best music of the hippie period of the late 60's early 70's was the angrier stuff that was the result of all the horrible stuff going on at the time.

77. I agree totally
the best art comes from the worst emotions. I always noticed the best songs from the hippie era came from the angriest people (MC5 anyone?).

Not to say that I don't like happy songs, but even Hendrix's best stuff was his boldest. Who could deny the bold "black power" statement of Voodoo Child (Slight Return)?

Compare something like The Clash's London Calling with it's terrifying warning of nuclear holocaust with a weak hippie cop-out song like The Beatles' Revolution. That song with it's warning about being too extreme makes me sick.

"You say you'll change the constitution
Well you know
We all want to change your head
You tell me it's the institution
Well you know
You better free your mind instead"

Sounds about right for the hippies. The answer isn't to change the oppressive system, but to change yourself instead. Wow maaaaaaan that's deeeeeeeeep. :puke:

As a general rule, Hippies will always be behind Punks in terms of saying what REALLY needs to be said.

flame away hippies!!!!!!!

70. Who taught you to hate how you are supposed to look?
Estetics are a learned trait. That is we learn what is acceptable appearance and what is distasteful. We have been taught by the corporations to hate our natural apperance so they can sell us every manner of product to change ourselves. We are taught to contort, twist, slice, and chop our bodies until we conform to a standard set that is unatainable. Its a constant barrage from all points. Its a wonder there are as many hippies around as there are.

which easily-generalized group do YOU identify yourself with?

Maybe someone can start another "I hate (fill-in-the-blank)" thread. That'll add to the intelligent discourse, won't it?

Add on edit:

As a liberal - I don't know why - I disdain judgmental dickheads of most sorts. I don't know why. I'm sure it probably says more about me than them, but I can't help it. They just annoy the hell out of me. They have to be the most unattractive humans to ever walk the face of the earth.

And they are ridiculously self righteous on top of everything else.

BTW - I am 100% liberal but for some reason don't like judgmental dickheads and know I am not alone in this.

84. Who said you had to like Patchouli
The stuff gives me a headache. None the less this thread was started on the premise that a certain subset of society was somehow distasteful due to appearance. I contend that it is those adhearing to the corporate sense of what we should be struggling to look like that are the problem. Look how you want to look. Be who you want to be. Perhaps even learn to love how you actually look without all the intervention foisted on you by those that would define you.

So what if they are unattractive?(I disagree btw) I didn't know being attractive was a requirement to be accepted actually, wait a minute.. I did, because of the media and society basically tells people they should look a certain way, etc. Oh and they smell bad too! :eyes: I don't like labels but one thing I hate more is when people "hate" a certain group which by his/her defination falls under a label. I don't hate all jews, I don't hate all blacks, I don't hate all "hippies", I don't hate all "metal heads", etc.

is the smell. What is that, incense? It physically gags me, so I can't be around them for too long.

Other than that, hippies are friends and a good source of C sativa.

80. Hippies....
Side notes here....not to be a mean but more of a median...

But of my friends the "hippie" type, who wears birks, tie dies, toured with the Dead, wears patchouli, etc, is one of the most Conervative Ayn Rand Lawyers I know.

And of my Lefty buddies, one of my freinds who is a staunch Socialist with strong Marxist tendencies is about as clean cut as they get. He doesn't wear the name brand stuff - he shops at J. C. Penneys and TJ Maxx for cheap, but conservaitve clothes.

87. And hippies worry you because?
Don't worry about the hippies. We aren't like this for your sake. We simply are living life as we wish to. Know what? We wish nothing more than the same for you.

We don't think we are better than you. We may believe we see influences on your life that you may be unaware of and give voice to that. But trust me we have no interest in trying to enforce our views. Its simply concern for a fellow human being. When you see someone bashing their head against a wall there is just something inside us that makes us want to see if there is anything we can do to help. Maybe they don't know they don't have to bash their head against the wall. If we find out they really like bashing their head against the wall so be it. Everyone gets to pursue happiness how they see fit (as long as they don't hurt someone else (unless of course they ask first)).
