Denny's Cashier Slams Robbery Suspect's Thumb In Drawer
<snip>

AUSTIN, Texas -- A quick-thinking Denny's cashier thwarted a robbery by slamming the man's thumb in the cash drawer, trapping him while she yelled for help, police said.

According to a police affidavit, Duane Eric Roper ate at the restaurant on Thursday and then asked the cashier for change for a dollar. When she opened the drawer, he allegedly pulled out a box cutter and demanded all the money.

As the suspect reached into the drawer, the cashier slammed it shut and yelled for help. A customer called 911 while a manager freed the man and told him to leave.

The suspect left the restaurant empty handed, and the manager and customer who called 911 followed him on foot, relaying his description and whereabouts to emergency dispatchers.

Roper was arrested a short time later.

Roper, 42, was arrested on a charge of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, a first-degree felony. He also allegedly admitted to robbing a store at an Austin mall.

1. Stupid
It wasn't her money. She could have died to save her employers some money.

2. I don't think it was stupid. You never know how
you will react in those situations until you are in it. I probably would have given him the money, but I can't say for sure. He had a freakin' box cutter. What an idiot!

5. To be fair
Stupid may have been a bit harsh of me. Foolish may be a better word.

Of course, we don't know how we should react but most places do tell their employees to not fight.

My daughter works in fast food and she has been trained to 100% cooperate. Yeah, I know, there are the one in a thousand or so times the asshole robbers kill everyone, but you can;t assume that is what will happen.

Me on the other hand, I own my own business so it would be my choice to make to fight or not. But considering how business is lately I don't think I would fight over what I have in my cash register.

6. Foolish is a better word. Like I said, I think I would have
given him the money. Even if it were my money, I would rather be alive than have the money (b/c what good is it if I am dead), but sometimes your adrenaline is pumping and you just react without thinking. I hope I never have to find out what I would do.

4. Reminds me of the story (supposedly true) about a McD's robber
I got this one on email a couple of years ago.

So this robber walks into a McDonald's and puts a gun in the cashiers face and says, "Give me all the money"

The cashier says, "I'm sorry sir I can't open the register unless you order something"

"Okay, give me a Big MAc"

"I'm sorry sir we are currently serving breakfast. We don't serve lunch until 10"

The robber supposedly was so frustrated he just walked out.
