Formula that says Federer will win
Roger Dobson

WHEN Roger Federer is asked to name the most important factors in winning Wimbledon, he lists concentration, focus, preparation and total engagement.

Scientists have devised a different formula: fij = ft + (fi - fav) - (gj - gav). It is their equation to explain why they think the Swiss player will become the men’s singles champion for a third successive year.

Mathematicians at Swinburne University in Australia believe they can forecast results by studying the serve and return statistics for each player.

Their research is already being used by bookmakers to prepare spread bet odds.

BUT ALL the smart money in the UK's on RODDICK.

Saw him beat the Italian, and then Andreev yesterday.

UK bookmakers have slashed his openeing odds of 5/1 against to 2/1. Federer opened 8/13 FAV now 10/11.

1. Federer is so far ahead of the other players...
that they should give the second best player in the world a ranking of #3 to demonstrate the gap between them. If he continues to play this way for another 2 or 3 years, he may become the greatest ever.

2. Roddick's upped his game at Wimbledon, playing more like a young
Sampras with the new serve and volley technique that's been lacking in his performance so far.

Brit fans interviewed on TV said that something's changed: not only did he shave off that grizzly beard and start to wear his hat the right way round, he then gave a TV interview showing his full face and saying the new serve/volley routine is giving him the breaks that previously illuded him....

Federer? He's starting to groan and grunt a lot at Wimbledon.....
