My Daddy died yesterday......

13. My parents are pretty old. They're doing OK so far, but I know that

some day soon, I'll get that phone call... either to come right away or maybe it'll be too late already which I can hardly conceive.

I think about it a lot.

15. My dad was only 64....Leukemia...the bone marrow transplan killed him....

....he'd done well until last week and his kidney's quit functioning and he just couldn't fight it anymore...I pushed for the transplant and the last thing he said to me before they left was...next time you see me I'll be well...won't get to ever see him again as he'll be cremated in Dallas and brought back home. Sure, you miss them and what they meant to you in your life. And in no way do I minimze that contribution. I miss one or both my parents, for instance, every day of my life.... and they've been gone for 10 and nine years.

I think the great gift that we get on that end is, we get to realize that just as parents sometimes realize that children are on loan to us for a little while when they are young and need us so dearly, our parents are on loan to us for a little while too.

We get to realize what a precious gift sharing this life with them was. In the best of circumstances, we get to realize this soon enough for us to realize it and share it with them before they leave this life.

My father went through a very similar thing last year right around this time. The doctor recommended surgery, and we all encouraged him to have it. Afterwards, people second guessed the decision, but it really was the best decision that could be made given the information that we had. Bottom line: it was just time for my father to go. We miss him terribly, and the first year anniversary (which is the 5th) is going to be very hard, but is does get easier. It doesn't mean that we don't love him as much, but time takes the edge off, and we are able to enjoy our memories of him more without our hearts feeling as though they're going to burst.

Right now, it's most important that you be really gentle with yourself. Treat yourself the way you'd treat a friend who's going through this. Don't have any expectations as to how you should or shouldn't be reacting, and let people know (including us) when you need a shoulder to cry on. We'll be here for you! :hug:

My heart goes out to you. Losing a parent at any age is devistating. My Daddy died 7 years ago, and I will always miss him.

Take a little time to learn about the 7 (I think it's 7) stages of grief. You'll go through all of them, not necessarily in order, the duration and severity of each will be different for you then anyone else, and you may go through one or more without even recognizing it. It helped me a lot to know about the stages of grief so I knew what was happening to me and that it was all perfectly normal.

Don't be afraid to ask for help. Many people need short-term medication to help deal with the depression and anxiety that goes along with losing a loved one. If it helps you, eat the pills you may be prescribed... don't be a hero by trying to do without if they will help you.

Great big hugs to you, Amber, and two dry shoulders to cry on if you need to. :hug: PM me any time... sometimes it's a lot easier to really open up and moan, cry, rant and complain to strangers you can't see then it is with your own friends and family. "Internet people" really saved me when I was going through what you are now.

My mom passed away in March. I had no energy that entire week. It took everything I had just to pick the casket.

It's hard at first, but trust yourself to get through it. Only you know how to grieve. For some, thinking about their loved one and crying works. For others, like me, it's easier to just busy oneself.

Either way, surround yourself with your other loved ones, friends and family alike. That's one thing that does help.
