Due to the many posts accusing newbies of being possible freepers . . .
the newbies are planning a coup.

Why are we that have the 1000+ so quick to accuse a newbie? We were a newbie at one time.

I "think" I was accused at one time or another. However, over time, I do not remember being accused so much.

I think others, including myself, that may find a newbie suspicious, may research their posts. You can get a feel or not if that person is a freeper or a newbie wanting to contribute.

Don't tell me to get a life because I know I don't have one when I can sit and research previous posts of a suspicious newbie.

Any other "seasoned" members remember their newbie days? Were you ever accused of being a freeper?

I was thinking that maybe if the newbies saw that it is a "right of passage" for lack of a better term, that most of us have gotten accused at one time or another of being a freeper, it would help them to just ignore the posts that accuse them and move on.

One day when you make the 1000+, and you may even start contributing, you may find a newbie's post suspicious yourself!!! Will you ignore it or call them on it? Think about it?

1. It is kind of a hazing process. We have to toughen
them up in order to prepare them!! J/K! I've never accused anyone although I have been suspicious.

20. Do you have a hamster as a pet or have you had a hamster as
a pet? Just wondering because my friend had one (I don't like them because they have paws that are only 3 claws and that creeps me out). Anything with only 3 digits (birds too), I cannot handle them touching me. Maybe I need to go on Fear Factor :sarcasm:

25. No I just thought it was cute.
I used to have one when I was in high school and it got out of its cage. I was never able to find it. I left for college the next year and I had long forgotten about my little hampster. Well my dad heard some scratching in the attic so he assumed we had some very large mice (b/c the scratching was so loud and we don't generally get rats here) so he left out some rat poison. Well a week later he found my very very large dead hampster. That hampster lived a year in my house. I figured he probably had a good last year eating whatever he could get his little hands on!!!!

31. OMG! That is so sad and surprising as well because the average
lifespan of a hamster is only two years. That is why I asked if you had one because if you did, I wasn't going to tell you the lifespan. She called hers Oscar. I bet your Hamster was the size of a guinea pig and to think of it, that is what my friend had, she had a Guinea pig not a hamster. I'm brain dead by I'm not a newbie or a freeper.

39. Yeah my dad said it was about the size of a guinea pig.
They weren't going to tell me, but it slipped one day. Looking back, it is a funny story b/c even if my hampster was murdered (ha!), he lived his last year eating candy, bread, and whatever else was in our pantry. He looked like that hampster on the Nutty Professor!!!! :P

49. So his last year was complete freedom for him and he lived it
to the hilt. Good for him. Sad he got poisoned.

I had a rabbit named, Pinky, when I was a kid. I bought it for one dollar and it cost my dad $30 to build it a cage. We kept moving the cage all over the backyard because it would eat all the grass and leave all those little pellets everywhere.

One morning I got up and pinky was gone. My dad said he must have gotten out but I found no evidence of that. I think it was a planned hit.

Also (this makes me feel terrible when I think about it now). I have always had cats. One time my cat had gotten a baby rabbit and brought it to the porch. It was scared but not dead. It was wounded from bites. I got it away from the cat and tried to clean it up some. My dad had a workshop shed so after that I put it in the shed, gave it water and food, and thought my mother was checking on it but she wasn't. I wasn't either. I guess it suffocated from the heat because it was such a hot summer. I felt so terrible and still do. I hate when I remember this stuff. (bummer).

52. Yeah I know. I used to have a bunny to named Bugsy.
He "supposedly" ran away. I don't know how, but he did. I also had a gliding squirrel that was in a large cage in the back yard. He froze to death. I was too little to know better and my dad should've provided some type of covering for the cage. I also had 6 chicks when I was in high school and when they started getting too big, my dad took them out to this pond on the golf course (he was the Park Commsioner and over the golf course)with the other ducks out there. Well a fox came and ate my ducks. So my dad was never ever able to be in charge of one of my pets again. He never intentionally hurt them, but bad luck always seemed to ensue.

19. A long time ago, on a bulletin board far, far away . . .
known as DU, every newbie (less than 100 or 1000 posts) were constantly being accused of such.

Some of the people who accused too much were told by our leader of this here board, Skinner, the guy that owns this place, that he would figure out who was or was not a freeper, and that by some of the accussations that were being posted, new members would leave and never come play with us anymore because we hurt their feelings.

As some are really scared of this board leader/owner, Skinner, many people just clammed up and no longer accuse ANYBODY of being a freeper. Then there are those that want this board leader/owner, Skinner, to ban them forever for breaking his rules.

This is not a Democracy . . . this is a bulletin board and voting doesn't mean anything. Just like when we vote for president.

The End.

30. I only remember a few times
During elections this place gets swamped with trolls. They come and go now, but obviously not as many as when something "big" is going on.
I still get a kick out of seeing trolls that come here and spend hours/days/months/years on DU and build up thousands of posts so they can come out one day and say "Ha, I fooled all of you idiots". I always ask myself..."Who is the idiot?".
Then there are the ones that come here from other forums who call themselves "moles". What a bunch of whack-jobs. Yeah, they are going to get some heavy duty inside information. They are just another bunch of morons that need to get off their asses and do something more important than spending hours trying to get the "inside scoop" of a place that the whole world can check out if they are hooked up to the internet.
To be honest, I have no idea what your reply was supposed to mean. All I can say is, you are right..this is a bulletin board and if people don't like the way the owners run things, they can split. If people want to come here and play "secret spy" then who gives a shit? Let them have their mindless fun and when they are banned..fuck 'em.

41. I guess I should have put the little sarcasm sign dripping after
my post. Most of it was tongue and cheek; however, some of it was fact. The rules pretty much say this is a board but it doesn't mean it's a Democracy or something. What is it that the freepers like to say . . . oh yeah . . . Love it or leave it. That's their answer to everything.

5. I was a newbie just over a year ago...I actually posted lots of
"That's right!", Yes! and "ROFLMAO' posts, just because I was so elated to find this site and finally see that there were other rational (and very funny) people out there.

I haven't been accused of being a freeper, however, I must confess, I alerted on someone before researching their posts.

It turns out, this person was a grouchy curmudgeon, but he/she was definitely not a freeper. I actually posted in the "ask the Admin" forum, asking if there was a way to "take back" an alert. (there's not.)

So..newbies, sometimes, if your post is sounding sour or a little mean, it may get alerted. But, unless you openly tout the neocon evil agenda, you shouldn't be "called out" on the thread.

Welcome to all newbies, the more the merrier! MKJ

27. Great post. Couldn't have said it better myself. I just need to add
that researching someone's posts really, in a way, let you see just exactly what type of person they might be. Like that one you alerted was just a hateful ass but not a freeper. I love searching up peoples posts and I start with the first one and work my way up. Yep, I have no life. (I say that because I know someone else will so I just get it out of the way).

57. which software are you using?
in almost everything, you can reduce the size to 1X1 inches, which is good enough.

As a reminder, most images are rectangular and will look squashed when turned into squares, I recommend cutting a square out (paint will do this is nothing else, although I fully recommend Picasa for that and cleaning it up, wbut I don't think you can resize there)

I was accused of being freeper because I agreed that Martha Stewart was guilty of a crime. Dem or not, she still committed a crime.

Man... I was JUMPED all over and told that I shouldn't post controversial posts until I've been around a while.

At first it kinda soured my experience here, but then I was ready to prove that I wasn't a freeper.

I've met wonderful people here, this is really a great group. But I do agree that some folks should be a little more reasonable before accusing someone of being a freeper.

37. It depends on what they are posting in their early posts.
I'm not saying that any new poster has to be 100 percent sucking up to regulars or just agreeing/LOL etc., but if someone with few posts posts exclusively things that are provocative, hotbutton, or highly critical of popular Dems, then naturally most DU regulars would have their spidey sense tingling. Especially if the tone of the posts is borderline hostile or very aggressive.

A very common scenario is for lowpost freeptrolls to post in military or Iraq War related threads, to try and present some kind of half assed history or military strategic thinking to show how the bulk of DU opinion on the Iraq War is all wrong. This doesn't necessarily mean they are a Bushbot, but the odds are high that they are.

One would expect a new member, new poster to be somewhat cautious in the things they post. Not to not speak their mind, but just like anyone new in any social group, to be conscious of how they might be perceived by others especially as a new member.

It's just human nature that suspicions are aroused if new posters behave otherwise.

since that just happened. We're discussing the 60 Minutes segment on the Marines and a low poster checks in with a totally vile post. Sure to be repeated on hate-radio tomorrow as more evidence of our hatred of the military and the troops.

38. I was never once accused of being a freeper...
when I was a newbie or since. Maybe it's because I didn't come in with all guns blazing. As for being suspicious of newbies... only when they site RW sources or exhibit any other freeperish views or qualities. There've been plenty of disruptors here, as you know, and many, many great new members too.

so i hit the lounge in the wee hours for a few days straight and took care of my newbie status, unless one chose to check my posts and saw they were mostly fluff, and had all come very quickly. but it made it easier for me to hit GD without the suspicion and accusations. I understood the reasoning behind it, and also saw donating as a way to get legit in the eyes of many 'oldies'. I put my money where my mouth/fingers were, LOL!

I have some substance in my history now, at least I think so.

If they are really trolling, calling them on it won't do any good. Do people think that calling out a troll for trolling is going to shame them into stopping?

Is it just the need to be right (even at a risk of being wrong) that drives DUers to call others trolls, make remarks about pizza, post *sniff, sniff*, etc.?

Is saying "ha, ha! didn't fool me!" part of the game? Personally, I think it just gives them satisfaction. Ignoring them would be much more effective and much more annoying to the trolls.

But the mods know when it is a clique alert or paranoia. I think even if someone comes here with the intention of disrupting/spying it is obvious in due time--they rarely get out of the 700 club. I personally would never accuse anyone though--or alert--since I think if they are not truly progressive they will be after a few months of reading posts here.

I don't remember it being so distrustful when I first joined though. Even now, it seems like only a few individuals who freak out for the most part.

Some jerk lit in on me because I had a different opinion regarding Dean. This was like late last year. The jerk has since been tombstoned because he was a rude obnoxious ...
So if someone gets accused, remind them there are some obnoxious people on the site and it has nothing to do with them personally. Also, some discussion forums are uglier than others. One I avoid is general discussion - politics.

And/or is a member of this horrible rw message board named 'free republic' or some such nonsense. They like to come over here sometimes and cause trouble. So the ones who have been around a long time get a tab paranoid at times when there is a difference of opinion. But it is very surprising how many folks of the right wing persuasion do come over here, start a nasty little thread or enter sly inflammatory comments on a thread.

that really sounded like something that a freeper would post. However, it turned out that the person was really a 14 year old boy who had just been fed bad information. (I was able to tell that what he was saying was true by his past posts and due to the fact that his mother was an high count poster.) He really was so cute, and I'm really glad that people didn't start jumping down his throat too fast. (They were definitely crouching and ready to go for the jugular though...)

We have great mods, and the admin are more than reasonable. I've reported a couple of pretty damned obvious freepers (not because they were shilling for the RWers- they were doing the opposite), and they didn't even get banned.

Myself, people have accused me just for NAILING the right-wingers so hard that they take notice and publish it. Go figure.
