I need serious advice here.
Part of an Air Force family, and we're moving down to Georgia. I don't know if I'll be able to stand it. Mother says we should just "lie low", but I really don't like doing that. I know it makes for a quieter life, but...

I dunno, really. It kinda feels like I'm betraying what I believe in when I don't speak my mind and when people say obviously stupid things: "Bush is a guud prezdent" and "the war on Iraq was completely right" and things like that...

It is on the other hand a chance to make a completely fresh start, maybe make some pseudo-friends who won't know enough about me to reject me immediately.

What do you guys think?

just taking things slowly. Keep an open mind and you'll find friends I'm sure.

Welcome to DU! :hi:

4. Georgia is not 100% Republican. You will meet many new friends
that will add to you knowledge of different cultures. Just make a game of observing classmates before you accept new friends. My guess is you'll be pleasantly surprised.

To what base are you going?

excellent communities in the area.

You will have a great time and meet new friends.

Good luck to you! :hi:

5. Don't go in with preconceived notions -- such as
Edited on Wed Jun-22-05 04:46 PM by bertha katzenengel
imagining you will hear anyone say "Bush is a guud prezdent." That is insulting. Southerners are neither stupid nor illiterate, and that quote sounds like that's what you expect to find.

Their politics may be more conservative than where you're moving from, but remember, that's just a generalization. Get to know individuals, and don't project who you've always assumed Southerners to be onto the people you meet. You'll be fine.

Where are you moving from? (edit: never mind, just looked at your profile)

Welcome to DU.

12. "that's what I hear" -- then "I've never been to Georgia" --
Edited on Wed Jun-22-05 04:56 PM by bertha katzenengel
I fell in love w/ someone on line. We corresponded for months. Then came time for that first phone call.

She had a heavy southern accent! I knew she was originally from Tennessee, but -- my God!

Prior to that moment, I had always "thought" that Southerners were backward, ignorant, inbred, stupid, and ultra-conservative across the board.

Ten seconds after I heard that accent, I realized what a non-thinking asshole I had been up to that point.

I repeat: Southerners are nothing like how they are frequently portrayed, any more than African Americans are ghetto-loving crack-addicted million-baby-having welfare-robbing chronically unemployed losers.

PS THINK before you just accept everything you hear as fact. You'll get along swimmingly!

6. From a veterans point of view, you should not change one thing...
Edited on Wed Jun-22-05 04:54 PM by ALiberalSailor
...because more than anything else, everyone on that base has dedicated at least a part of their lives, and in some cases their entire lives to ensuring you have the right and responsibility to speak your mind. Sure, most of those you'll find will lean to the right, but if you look real hard, you'll find people like us. On an Air Force Base, I suspect you would find more than say on an Army Post or a Navy Base.

...I tend to get "emotional" about the military and my service to this country.
