What's your favorite home remedy for bug bites?
I was told four different things by four different people today.
Toothpaste, baking soda, snuff, and Preparation H.

Went googling, found a ton more. Which ones actually work, LOL?

So far, I've tried the toothpaste...while minty, I'm not sure it's working.

4. Hehehe.
I'm looking at that as a last resort...me and the kid were out putting up the pool yesterday, and both of us are bitten up good.

Amputation isn't looking bad. :)

6. Seriously,
we use a prescription cortisone ointment I got from my buddy the dermatologist.

One thing I know is that calamine lotion is worthless. Try Cortaid, or some OTC corticosteroid thing.

And then get out the long knives .................... heh heh heh

8. I rarely get bit
but my husband does. He likes Tiger Balm. I am not certain what it is or what it really does but a friend recommended it and he likes it OK. Says it helps at least a little.

10. a salve called
"sting stop" from the health food store. Contains echinachea and citronella. Two to three applications and they're gone. Works on cold sores, herpes, and chicken pox as well though I've ony used it on the latter.

15. The very best, the cheapest, the safest and the best smelling
thing against mosquitoe bites is 100 % pure lavender oil. Like everything it works best the sooner after the bite you use it. Where we keep the horses there are a lot of mosquitoes. I introduced all our visitors to lavender oil and now most - like me - always have a tiny bottle of it with them at all times. Also excellent with first degree burns and disinfecting little wounds.

19. I've heard meat tenderizer
and clorox...Meat tenderizer for mosquito bites breaks down the protein in what makes it itch and the clorox is for bee stings. It supposedly destroys the venom. Soda paste works, too. Thats what I usually use.

21. I put clean pennies on a bee sting.
You take a penny and tape it on the area of the sting. It does take some of the swelling down.
I also do oatmeal baths on large areas of mosquito and chigger bites. Keeps the itch down.

22. When I was a kid
my dad used to tell me to press an X with my fingernail in the bite and then to put saliva on it. It did seem to work. These days I lightly spray a repellant with deet to my clothing every morning before I go out because I live in the tropics and need to avoid bites.
