My first baby, Robby, was born September 23, 2004.

I officially became an over-the-hill "old fart" on May 2, 2005. 60!!!

Call me irresponsible. Call me unreliable. Call me reprehensible toooooooo. I don't care!

Robby will celebrate his first birthday next September 23!

This will be my first ever Father's Day and I am jumping for joy!

I thought at 59 I knew it all.

I didn't know shit.

My baby has taught me more in less than a year than life had in 59 years!

what a ride it has been! I wouldn't have missed it for the world...

There's are some great advantages to being an "older dad".

You have more patience
You appreciate the child (son) much more than a teenage Dad.
You can impart much more wisdom to the child than when you were younger.
You understand the great cycle of life and appreciate it.

I definitely have more patience than ever before.

I can't say I appreciate my child more than any teenage dad, but can say I appreciate him more than I would have if he were born when I was a teenager.

I sincerely believe I have much more wisdom to depart to my child than I did last year or the year before or the years, many of them before that...

I do understand the cycle of life and appreciate it - and I got to see "Lion King" performed live at the old Pantages Theater in L.A.!!!

and I think I'm starting to develop a Grandpa urge. Not that I don't want my daughter to finish college, and make her own choices in life.

But I miss having a little one around. My wife and I tried for several years, but it just isn't gonna happen.

I married late in life - to someone much younger who'd never had children either.

We tried for years, with no luck. We began thinking "it just isn't going to happen. Maybe we should look into adoption." Which we did.

But then, last September, Robby was born.

You just never know.

Miracles happen.

wonderful fish and plaques. In La Jolla, California.

One plaque was "Dedicated to Papa. Who told me 'Tread gently on Mother Earth. She's pregnant.' I will pass your love of the earth and sea and your wisdom to your grandchildren (a, b, and c)."

Especially when their childrens' fathers don't contribute time, energy or, most horrendously, financial support.

Sadly, there are far too many single moms out there living this reality.

Today I go help dad with the house. Talk some politics. Grill some cow and some veggies.
1,720 no longer have the "option" to go chill with dad today. So many more are so far away that a phone call is all they (may) get. Can't we just bring 'em all home? Why do we die for a lie?
I know this was about dad's day but this late night thought hit hard.

My first was just after my oldest son was born in 1994.

I've got two boys--they live some 300 miles away. I talk to them once a week, though--unless their phone's temporarily disconnected.

Tomorrow's another father's day I'll celebrate by going to visit my Dad again...after our Midsummer Ritual, that is.

48. My son and I celebrated my 27th fathers day yesterday and went

fishing together. I caught a real nice Black Crappie and released it into my pond. Then we had weiner roast last night, drank beer and watched family member trying to catch some of my catfish. I say trying because I have huge catfish and they were having one hell of a time landing them.. It was funny..

He celebrated his first Father's Day as a stepfather in 1998. Our first child together, a daughter, was born in December of 1999, and our son was born in January of 2002.
