1. Depends on your taste.
I love a lot of Cure songs. My favorite, though, is One Hundred Years.

2. You must tell us why.
I stopped listening after Disintegration, but it's all good when you're in the mood.

Charlotte Sometimes, I find, is their most moving of songs.

15. I'm with ya Sun ...
The Cure created some memorable music ...

Is it 'bad' music ? .... chuckles .... How can THAT music be bad ? ...

It is energetic, sometimes frenetic, always wistful and wry ....

I am amazed at the 'hatred' expressed at such simple and benign subject areas like art and music ... The Tom Cruise hatred threads really disgust me; its as if running someone into the ground simply because they arent your personal cup of tea has become vogue here ...

I can assure EVERYONE that those on this thread who gratuitously spit upon a decent artist like Robert Smith, simply for the pleasure of ramming someone into the mud, has never created a single artwork of value .... not a one ...

There is something ugly about character assassination like this ...

32. No .. not at all ...
Someone who doesnt attack others for selfish reasons ...

Cruise acting is sometimes blah, sometimes incredible ... but the viciousness of the diatribes against him here seem animalistic ....

If one of my friend participated in such gratuitous meanness: I would chastise them as well ... why shouldnt I ? ...

What of civility ? ... Does it NOT exist ? .. only for a moment ? ... sometimes, except when we 'hate' someone ? ...

Hatred, even in jest, isnt a pretty thing ...

This shit is ugly ...... Disliking an artist is fine and dandy, but the self righteous smears and pandering to the lowest rank is low brow ....

35. Ok, are you reading whats being said?
Saying "The only good Cure song is blah, discuss" isn't an attack, or a smear, it's a comment about which cure song I think is good, and a reference to how I feel about the cure. I didn't say Robert Smith is a loser, I hate him, he's a talentless hack. You need to get some perspective if you think THAT is a smear. Am I attacking people for saying "I like the cure" or "I like this cure song?" No. Get over it. You are way off base here.

10. I occasionally love a well written pop song ....
And 'Friday, I'm In Love' is an ideal pop rock song ....

I don't care if Monday's blue
Tuesday's grey and Wednesday too
Thursday I don't care about you
It's Friday, I'm in love

Monday you can fall apart
Tuesday, Wednesday break my heart
Thursday doesn't even start
It's Friday I'm in love

Saturday, wait
And Sunday always comes too late
But Friday, never hesitate...

I don't care if Mondays black
Tuesday, Wednesday - heart attack
Thursday, never looking back
It's Friday, I'm in love

Monday, you can hold your head
Tuesday, Wednesday stay in bed
Or Thursday - watch the walls instead
It's Friday, I'm in love

Saturday, wait
And Sunday always comes too late
But Friday, never hesitate...

Dressed up to the eyes
It's a wonderful surprise
To see your shoes and your spirits rise
Throwing out your frown
And just smiling at the sound
And as sleek as a shriek
Spinning round and round
Always take a big bite
It's such a gorgeous sight
To see you eat in the middle of the night
You can never get enough
Enough of this stuff
It's Friday, I'm in love

I don't care if Monday's blue
Tuesday's grey and Wednesday too
Thursday I don't care about you
It's Friday, I'm in love

Monday you can fall apart
Tuesday, Wednesday break my heart
Thursday doesn't even start
It's Friday I'm in love

Its tiring to see such negativity ...

So we should all like every musician in the world now just because they make music? That's ludicrous and you know it. Not a single person bashed The Cure in this thread. They expressed that they weren't fans, but they DID NOT bash them. So where is this ugliness? Does not liking a band make one a bad person now?

As for Tom Cruise, I try to avoid the Tom Cruise threads at all costs, but frankly, there are legitimate reasons to express a dislike for Tom. It has nothing to do with him dating Katie Holmes, nor is it relevant at all who he is dating. It doesn't even have to do with his movies (some of which I quite enjoy). But I think it's fair to call him on some of his recent bullshit.

Sorry if that upsets you.

I actually responded to the thread because my daughter wanted to create a smile face on the computer, but the Cure is one of my all time favorite bands. I enjoy most of their music.

Seems pointless to create a long list of songs. I could name the more common songs like:

Lullaby
Just Like Heaven
Pictures Of You
Close To Me
Lovesong

Blah, blah, blah.

Love em all! ;)

Frankly, I was thinking of a new group of youth that is NOW discovering the Cure ... including my 14 year old niece. I don't think many realize that the band was a "first" in many ways musically speaking.

I actually own "A Forest" so I'm aware it's an earlier song.

45. The Cure is nowhere near one of my favorite bands,
but they had a ton of great songs. My favorite is 'Boys Don't Cry'.

'Standing on a Beach/ Staring at the Sea' which is a sort of greatest hits from their early years is fantastic from start to finish. 'Disintegration' is also great when you are in the mood.

This band wouldn't even make my top 100, but they still did some great stuff.

48. Sorry.. I just have a hard time
seeing how a band (The Smiths) who've sold just enough records to get them booted off any self-respecting label can be considered "seminal". Did they have good songs? Yeah.. we're they nearly as influential as Rolling Stone or Spin would have us believe? Of course not...

ALL of Disintegration & Pornography, most of Wish & Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss me, and a lot from Head on the Door and Faith.

I'd go as far as to say Disintegration is one of the top ten best albums in rock history.

Man, the stink that was raised when this girl I know gave some old classic rock band a bad review, funniest thing ever. Even local radio hosts were trashing her on air for daring to say AC DC/Van Halen/Motley Crue/some other band (I can't remember) didn't put on a fantastic show. How dare you criticize someone who's sold millions of albums. Have YOU sold millions of albums? :eyes:

86. Some of my favorite music was 80's "underground" stuff.
Not the phony mid-level no-PR budget major label loss leaders like the Cure and Depeche Commode or the Smiffs, though. I liked the actual stuff.

I liked most of the SST material (almost all of it, in fact; I even liked it when SST got off the post-punk kick and got into avant-composition like Elliot Sharp and Henry Kaiser) and most of Homestead's stuff...

Shit, I'll just make you a list off the top of my head of the shit I dug from that era:

Squirrel Bait
Glass Eye
Mission of Burma
Volcano Suns
Great Plains
Gibson Brothers
Fire in the Kitchen
Dustdevils
Husker Du
Minutemen
Men and Volts
Stains
Naked Raygun
Lydia Lunch
Bad Brains
Christmas
The dB's
Eyeless in Gaza
Head of David
The Scientists
Chris Knox/Tall Dwarfs
The Clean
The Bats
76% Uncertain
Swiz
Jawbox

etc. etc. I tended to stay away from anything on major labels.

There's pictures of her with green spiky Robert Smith hair and too much make up and striped leggings, and a "Cocteau Twins" logo on her leather jacket. She still has all her old goth-wear.

She stopped being a goth around 1989. I'm not sure what made her change, though.

I'm just kidding.

Actually, she still likes all the old 80's goth MUSIC, but she dresses rather conservatively now (as do I) for whatever reason. I think it's because it's easier to find a job when you don't have an entire blacksmith's shop dangling from every orifice and gallons of product forcing your every follicle skyward.

And both she and I agree that there's far more interesting colors than basic black. Flourescent orange, for instance.

107. Please - ANY song from "Disintegration..."
'Fascination Street' is my all-time favorite Cure Song:

Oh it's opening time
Down on fascination street
So let's cut the conversation
And get out for a bit
Because i feel it all fading and paling
And i'm begging to drag you down with me
To kick the last nail in
Yeah i like you in that like i like you to scream
But if you open your mouth then i cant be responsible for
Quite what goes in or to care what comes out
So just pull on your hair
Just pull on your pout
And let's move to the beat
Like we know that it's over
If you slip going under
Slip over my shoulder
So just pull on your face
Just pull on your feet
And let's hit opening time
Down on fascination street
So pull on your hair
Pull on your pout
Cut the conversation just open your mouth
Pull on your face pull on your feet
And let's hit opening time
Down on fascination street

116. Let's all repeat the non-conformist's oath...
South Park Goth Kid: "To be a non-conformist, you have to dress in black, and listen to the same music we do."

Personally, I don't get all the band bashing going on around here... U2, now the Cure, and a few others that I'm spacing. Lots of great Cure songs, and U2 songs... some stinkers, too, but that's going to happen over a 20+ year career in music. It's happened to any band you can name that's been around even half that long...

Anyway, my point is why bother talking about bands you DON'T like? If you think the Cure has 1.5 good songs out of the dozens they've released, why even bring it up? Tell us what's GOOD in your opinion... and if folks are going to strike the pose of "I only listen to a Ukrainian death metal band called 'Urd' that's only available on 78-RPM vinyl," at least be positive about it.

118. What is WRONG with all of you?
I didn't say the cure sucks. I didn't say I hate the cure. I said I think those are the only two good cure songs. I didn't attack people who like the cure. I asked people to discuss. I was curious what songs they like.
OK, sure, I knew I'd get some people who freaked out about it. Thats where the humour comes in. Because it's hilarious to see people get so defensive about a band. I don't really care WHAT you listen to.
I happened to hear a Cure song on a mixed CD I had and realized they only had a couple of songs I liked.
Get. Over. It.
