4. Because they didn't know how to handle them, especailly in bad weather.
With today's technology, rigid airships could be much safer than their predecessors of the 20s and 30s.

7. I have no doubt you are correct!
But I wonder if "much safer" would ever be "safe enough"?

Still for some things like express cargo, they could be viable now. And in fact the Zeppelin company is back in the airship biz!

3. Actually her sister ship was the USS Macon.


Shenandoah was a different class, with no fighter capabilities

6. I often drive by the spot
where the Shenandoah went down. Not too many people remember the history of airships in America anymore.
