Poll question: if you were forced to give up your accent...
and required to adopt a new one, which would you choose:

-an American regional accent of your choice

or

-a foreign accent chosen for you at random

I've asked this amongst friends, etc, before, and the results were quite interesting

2. I don't have an accent
I speak the Queen's English (and she's jolly well not having it back either).

Voted foreign - whilst I might end up with a gorgeous (to my mind) southern accent, I might also end up with some horrible nasal thing from New Jersey or similar :scared:

5. I'll trade ya
I'll swap your UK accent for my southern one. :D

Truthfully, I don't have much of one on the job anyway. It only comes out when I'm with family and friends.

18. I can feel a Henry Higgins moment coming on now.
Repeat after me "the rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain" - it doesn't matter if you can't sing, we can have an obvious dubbing as in the film.

9. I'm from NJ and sound like any reporter....
according to many Brits/Middle Easterners/etc. I've met/known. So do my friends and family.

I never get this "NJ accent" thing.

The only New Jerseyans who talk strange with the "cawfee" and the Soprano talk are transplants from NY.

4. I had to surrender my New York accent when I lived in California.
I sneak it back when no one's hearing or looking except my wife.

8. Picked Random Foreign accent.
I've got a couple I'd LIKE to have, and know there are some for which I would prefer an American regional instead. But I figure I'll take the roll of the dice.

Sooooo, to see if I'd wind up happy, the first person to reply to this message with a foreign accent gives it to me.

(Closing eyes and wincing in advance.)

12. I'd rather choose my own American accent
That way I could choose something fairly mainstream not much different from what I have now. With foreign accents it's a crap shoot. Some are lovely, some much less so, others difficult to understand.

16. Random foreign. (crossing fingers for Italian or Afrikaan)
I love British accents and Indian accents, but I don't think they'd fit me, LOL!

22. I already pick my accent
I'm from the deep South, but being an Army brat removed any trace of an accent in an effort to fit in.

I am, however, able to turn on the drawl when it suits me and I discovered it was very useful when travelling up north. Apparently northern men will bend over backwards to assist a southern belle, LOL!

23. I've already given up my original Texas accent...
And, I guess I adopted a Northern one. I don't think I would like a randomly chosen one forced on me, no matter if it's foreign or not.
