My dog ate 2 Valiums this morning.
Will he be okay? He must have grabbed the bottle out of my purse. But I found a chewed up prescription bottle with 1/2 a Valium on the floor. I had 2 1/2 left before he got a hold of it. He seemed fine. They were only 5 milligrams each.

2. Call the vet!
I would imagine it would all depend on how big the dog is and whether valium is something they can tolerate.

3. Some vets give Valium to dogs to alleviate thunderstorm phobias
He'll probably just sleep it off, but do call the vet. Valium doesn't work on all dogs, and you may have to watch him for a day or two.

dose of the Valiums, he should be okay.

10. Call the vet for your peace of mind.
Edited on Mon Jun-13-05 08:46 AM by MercutioATC
...at 40-50 pounds, 7-8mg of Valium should just mellow the dog out a little (if that).

(no, I'm not a vet nor do I play one on TV)

13. I called and they said he'd be fine.
Well maybe he won't be chewing up anymore crap today anyway, he will be in la-la land. He loves to tear up stuff.

15. I knew a kid in high school who was eating 30-50mg of Valium a day.
(stealing his mother's meds)

He was hyperactive before that...the pills actually made him "normal". Valium's not a big deal usually...

Glad to hear your dog's going to be fine

18. I only had it because
I had to fly this past week and I have a fear of flying. I didn't even notice its effects on me. It really didn't help. So I got drunk instead. It worked better!

19. Being drunk on a flight can be bad if you have bad turbulence
Ask me how I know.

21. We did have bad turbulence
flying in Saturday. I landed in Jackson and we had to come in with the tropical storm on the coast. It was very bad. There weren't many people on the flight, so one flight attendant talked me through everything. They had to buckle up too b/c of the bumpiness, but she made sure I was comfortable. She even gave me free beer (and at four bucks a pop, that was awesome) and would not accept a tip from me. I walked up to her and thanked her when we finally landed. She was awesome!

20. As long as your stomach doesn't mind the alcohol, that's a great solution.
That, or a sleep aid like Ambien (for longer flights).

5. Call your vet, but he's probably okay.
My cat who weighed 14 pounds took 2 mg. of Valium everyday for 12 years. It kept him calm and using his litter box. Without the Valium he'd pee in the house.

I gave our dog, at 26 pounds, 2 mg. of Valium once and it did absolutely nothing.

Let us know what your vet says.

11. The vet said he'd be okay.
He is close to 50 lbs., so they said that he'd be fine.

6. Call vet ASAP! what's normal human dosage and how big is he?
5 mg does seem like a very small dose but i am not familiar with valium dosing.... even if he is a big dog and it is a small dose STILL CALL THE VET.

12. I called the vet; they said that he would be fine.
Whew! I don't even know how he got it. He loves to tear stuff up (he's still a puppy). I had it put up in my purse, he must have been nosing around in my purse.

14. I am so glad.... thanks for telling us of this... I was just thinking of
how I need to be more vigilant about keeping my meds away from anywhere my cats may mistake the bottle for a toy to be utterly destroyed in order to get the "treats" inside.

16. Yeah! From now on it will be put up in the medicine
cabinet where it belongs. They can be very determined when they want to get into something.

7. Call the vet now, they will be able to tell you if the dog OD'd
based on the strenght of the valium and size of the dog.
