Most money you ever spent at a strip club
Last night I went to Deja Vu (I'm pretty sure that almost all college students in Minnesota are very familiar with this place :) ). I thought I was being thrifty because this weekend they had a special where they waived the cover charge from 7-11. Well I actually counted my money going in: $131.

Today I counted the money left in my wallet: $11

ouch.

2. I don't much care for strip clubs
I think my ego is too big to give the girls any money to pretend they like me!

If I do end up in one, I usually tell them how much I charge though when they try to talk their lines at me! haha!

but my other cousin actually manages a strip club (a very nice one here in Chicago) and regularly gets $5,000 tips and often has executives, sports stars, rock stars, etc... who will fly in especially to go to his place and spend tens of thousands in one night. :o

7. I wonder how all the girls I saw there feel then
and no, I don't mean the strippers. About 40% of the customers were female. I actually ran into a guy who was in one of my classes last semester. He was on a date with his girlfriend. They both were having fun.

No harm at all and benefits for both sides. I had a very fun night and a bunch of women are now richer because of me. But hey no, let's just put an end to anything remotely sexual in public. I'm sure the Taliban and Jerry Falwell would love it.

9. Oh please. I seriously doubt 40% of the customers were women.
Most "girlfriends" who go to these places have no self esteem and are trying to prove how cool they are to their boyfriends. Don't give me that shit.
You haven't seen the end result of these women who "are now richer because of" guys like you. It might seem innocent now but talk to these girls in 5, 10, 20 years after you've settled down with the girl next door. It's not so funny then.
And don't ever compare me to the Taliban or Falwell. Your scrawny little butt was still shitting in the bath tub when I was working to get rid of attitudes like yours.

10. A lot of women these days do feel comfortable with showing
their bisexual tendencies....it would not be unusual for women to be in a strip club and genuinely enjoying it. As I said above, I am not into them, but occassionally (once every two years or so) I will end up in one - usually when I am with a lot of friends and we are in Las Vegas and that is what the group wants to do...I'll talk to the girls because they do come to hustle me. I am very respectful and I tell them that if they really need to make money then they should go after other guys because they will not get anything from me...other times I joke around by saying I charge more than they do so they owe me. The net effect of all this is that they want to stay and talk to me (maybe it is because of the challenge factor or because I speak to them like they are people and not strippers  - or a little of both)...but I do remind them that they will not get their rent money from me.

13. Not always.
I'm a lesbian and there's a strip club by me that also has a "rock club." Two seperate clubs in the same building. Anyway, the first time I was there, we saw a band play. The next band sucked so we went to the side with the girls. It was me and my then girlfriend.

We ended up going there fairly regularly, even with straight female friends. We'd have a good time, spend some singles once in a while, and guys left us alone.

25. I think you are wrong
I've seen numerous documentaries about strippers and their personal lives. Generally speaking, they are not only NOT enlightened, they are often victims of abuse as children, and/or suffering from drug habits now, supporting a boyfriend, have out-of-wedlock children, etc.

Most are quite hard-bitten and cynical, and are in it for the money, and the money only. They try to manipulate as much money out of the customer as they can. There is nothing sexual about what they do for themselves; it is strictly an act designed to separate the money from the customer.

28. In other words... a business.
It's fair to speak generally about any sub-group of people, but I think the OP, at least as I read it stated that all strippers were degraded. I think one's degredation is a matter for one's own opinion.

I'm sure there are more sad endings in the sex trade than in other fields, but on the other hand, a smart, sensible woman ho has a plan and sticks to it can make more money than you or I ever could.

I use my HS girlfriend as an example: She went to business college, ended up working as a mid-level exec for a major fast food outlet. She began stripping weekends on the side, and started making more money in a night than she would make in two weeks in her "day job". She quit her day job, and became a "touring feature". Retired from the proceeds at age 30, and bought a horse farm, which is what she wanted to do since she was a kid.

So I suppose one could argue that she was still degrading herself, but if you ask her, she would say she was not, and now she has the rest of her life to do whatever she wants.

If one is in the workforce, on is a prostitute. One is selling a piece of one's self for cash or whatever. I tend to think the people who are truly being degraded are the ones working for minimum wage or worse, having to smile for rude customers, and being abused by 20 year old assistant managers with axes to grind.

32. I think it is possible to be degraded and still make good money
I think these are completely two different questions altogether.

Obviously she makes big money off being a sex object. Many women who do this really have no other financial alternatives, unlike your girlfriend. There are clearly other forms of work that are degrading, as well, on a human level.

I don't agree that anyone in the workforce is a prostitute, because you are not selling your body to others in different occupations. That is an important distinction. You are also not dealing in a profession that attracts petty criminals and other exploiters, generally speaking.

40. But, makking the distinction between stripping and prostitution...
...because they are arguably different....

you are selling your body to others, in any occupation. Maybe not your genitalia, but your body, to one degree or another.

If you're an iron-worker, or a miner, or a cop, you are risking your body and your life on an almost daily basis, and that's a professional decision you have made, with consequences you accept.

If you'd rather fuck ugly strangers than inhale coal dust, that's your right. It's not fair for a third party to come along and, without knowing you, determine that your choice is wrong, or that (and this is what pushes my buttons), that you have made the "wrong" decision because you're being duped into believing it's right by some masonic patriarchal mind-control conspiracy, while making the "right" decision is a result of being secure in yourself and your own sense of morality.

I work with an organisation which retrains streetwalkers and escorts for the 'legitimate' workforce. While I have quite a few sad cases in my file, I also have a few women who were university students, professionals, etc. What I have learned from the more articulate women I work with is that they would much rather have sex with strangers than wear a blue apron and greet walmart customers (personally I think combining the two would be an empire in the making!). It's a conscious decision they've made. It all boils down to what one's personal comfort levels are, and how well one can compartmentalise work/home life.

And I don't want to blur this discussion with arguments about 14 year olds being pressed into prostitution, etc. What this post is about is strippers, who are, by law, adults, and working of their own volition.

47. I think it is reasonable to make generalized observations about stripping
Stripping is part of the use of women as sexual entertainment. It does further the patriarchal exploitation of women as sex objects. Is that now balanced out in other ways by more opportunities in other professional areas, where women are treated as equals? Maybe yes, and maybe no. Male strippers also earn big money, though I bet it is far less.

I still think the argument for the sexist nature of it all can still be securely made.

49. Yes, nobody says it's not sexist.
But ultimately, who has the power? Strip clubs will cease to exist when people stop taking their clothes off for money. Only two things will cause such a paradigm shift: a fundamentalist revolution (extremist feminism, religious fundamentalism, whatever), or the end of the free market capitalist economy.

Don't hold your breath.

Plus, that whole "women have no other option" excuse it, sorry to be so blunt, crap.

It reinforces learned helplessness. The former hookers I'm working with now believe they have other options, not because people stopped telling them they have no other options, but because they, themselves, have decided they have other options.

And, I'm sorry, but most of them who were taught they had no other options got some of that opinion from other women.

Oppression takes two: the oppressor and the oppressed.

50. But wouldn't you rather make an informed decision than a generalised one?
I with the handful of strippers and sex workers who are DU members would chime in on these subjects sometimes. Without the input of someone who actually takes his/her clothes off for money, this is all just rather academic and kind of hypocritical.

30. An interesting article....
http://www.vanmag.com/0204/dance_queen.html

"...What Sarionder is aiming for is "something artistic rather than pornographic." Her equal-opportunity body-beautiful policy is, short of featuring anything remotely Rubenesque, pretty much all-inclusive. The "VIP dancers" that troll the crowds in white lingerie selling private shows range in weight, age and cup size, as do the feature performers. "What they have in common," says Sarionder, "is their talent." Their acts range from tongue-in-cheek-wringing out a G-string in someone's gin and tonic-to gravity-defying pole and trapeze acrobatics. For Sarionder, who draws and paints in her spare time, it is all about art and expression.

The irony that she-a woman from a conservative Muslim background-should find herself defender of a woman's right to dance naked, and be handsomely paid for it, is not something that escapes her..."

65. Lucky you didn't order two "136-Ups"...
You'd be out $272 bucks.

57. Over $300.
I know $120 is a lot to a college student though.

68. $8,000
i was in New Orleans for a conference in 1999, scored some good weed and was settled back in a blues bar happy a opossum in a gum tree when our company's national sales manager saw me and grabbed me to help him and two of our sales reps with a half dozen customers who wanted to go to a "tittie bar"

i was just getting my buzz and groove all worked out at the blues bar and had no desire to accompany to a strip joint 9 married guys who were as lecherous as pigs. but they were big customers, so i helped out.

well, after an hour in the vip lounge, then another in the "extra special vip lounge" where i lost my considerable buzz, i got bored of looking at naked women who i could not touch and went out to smoke a joint with two of the girls. when we came back inside, bam! everyone was being hustled out by the cops because some of our customers got too randy with the strippers. as i returned, a huge bouncer grabbed me and was about to toss me to the cops. thankfully the girls i has smoked a joint with told the bouncer that i was okay, and the bouncer let go of me, but told me someone had to pay the bill or my sales manager and our customers were going to jail. he hit me with the night's bill, $8,000.

it was funny as hell because the two strippers i had shared a joint with asked me to breakfast at an all night dinner and when we were done they gave me a ride back to my hotel, where as i got out of their car, we saw the men from the strip joint sitting in the hotel bar looking at us.

i filled out my expense report for that trip and the attached the receipt. when the president of the company saw the bill he came into my office and started screaming at me. i told him what happened and informed him that if i was left holding the bag i was ready to call each and every wife of the men who were in that strip joint with me that night and tell them exactly what their husbands had done that night.

the president calmed down, but i quit a few months later.

$8,000 just to see naked women?

69. haha...it is even worse in Korea/Japan at the hostess bars
My friend over there (Seoul) took me to one of those with a few other friends. The way it works is that each guy gets a girl to hang with him for the evening. We all drank and sang karaoke together and flirted a lot. My friend was particularly choosy with his girl and he sent the first two girls the bar had chosen for him back until he was satisfied.

There is no stripping of any kind..just friendly flirting and maybe a little innuendo. One of the girls (who was quite hot :)), gave me her number afterwards, but that is strictly their prerogative...it was funny too because I barely spoke any Korean and they barely spoke English.

Bill Comes: $2,000
Tip: $500

for four girls to entertain four guys and have a few drinks with them! That is such a waste!
