Well, it looks like the Waldorf Cat Haven has a new pet cat.
Not just another stray to care for. Last night, Buddy became a pet, a member of the household -- although he will have to remain an outdoor cat. He came to the porch for dinner for the first time in a couple of weeks, and he was so skinny! This cat has a huge head, and it looked weird to see him so thin. Made me sad.

But he was so starved for affection, too, he would take a few bites, then come over to me to get petted and scratched, then he'd go back and eat more . . . . While he was eating, I treated him with Revolution. After a few minutes he stopped eating then curled up around my feet and purred and made biscuits. Then he got up to eat more.

After a little while I took a chance and picked him up. Stupid, because I've been attacked by strays when I've done that before. But something in me couldn't resist. He fell into my arms so naturally, and I melted. It's clear this was someone's house cat. I sat down with him and he curled up in my lap and purred for all he was worth. After a while he jumped down and ate more.

This morning when I opened the door to take food out, he ran right into the house. AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH! He's not neutered yet, and we have two female kittens who haven't been spayed yet. But when he realized I had food, he followed me out. Phew! But this is the first time I have seen him both at night and waiting for me the next morning. He knows he's found a home.

Buddy

1. Congrats to Buddy and to you. It is a match made in pet lovers heaven.
He knows animal lovers when he sees them.
His name should be Lucky since he is so lucky to have found such wonderful people like you to take such good care of him.
And of course, you have yet another sweet soul to love you forever.

7. You know, Brooklyn, sometimes I wonder
Edited on Fri Jun-10-05 08:32 AM by bertha katzenengel
if DUers think I post such threads for the kudos. (Sorry to hijack your post for this purpose.)

It's easy for me to say, but trust me, folks, I don't post about my cat community to get pats on the back.

The only thing I love more than writing is these critters, and naturally the two loves come together. Now I don't do that much writing here but I really enjoy expressing myself in this community -- DUers rock. And the old adage says, "write what you know." Well, dammit, I know cats, and baseball, and music, and California, and my family, so that's what I write about.

Anyway, BL, thank you for your kind remarks. (BTW, I am going to visit Brooklyn one day. One of my favorite authors called it the greatest city in the world. I believe it because no one I know loves their home town like Brooklynites (except maybe me... ;))).

I feed the strays around here but none of them will let me get close. I also feed a stray dog, and I've been trying to get him to let me put a collar and leash on him so I can get him neutered (he impregnates all the female strays and some of the female non-strays whose owners are too irresponsible to get them spayed  )

9. What about animal control?
It sounds harsh, but maybe you can find a no-kill dog shelter?

Do they make humane traps for dogs?

13. The Baltimore City animal shelter
has a lot of problems. They're getting better, but they are very short staffed, they can't take private donations (though I think that has changed recently), and they euthanize 40,000+ animals a year.

I'd certianly take him to a no kill shelter if he'd let me, and if they had room. He'll take treats from me but he won't let me touch him. I'm not sure if they have humane traps for dogs, I'll have to look into that. I feel really bad for him, but he looks a lot better since I started leaving food out for him. He's not so skinny anymore, and his coat looks a lot better.

18. It's very difficult to find a no-kill shelter that is not already full.

Maybe you can find a rescue group in your area. I am fostering a dog for a local rescue group.

21. Lynne, does Buddy look anything like Abbie, or am I misremembering
your boy's face?

And how long has it been since you adopted Abbie? I remember that like it was yesterday.

His little face in your previous posts sort of "spoke to me" - I'm glad you're keeping him around the house!

Are you talking about that thing they do with their front paws? That's such a cute way of describing it :)

25. that's so cute. i had a friend that
used that phrase as well. Wish I could show pics of our little precocious kitties. They are at that really, really cute stage, starting to dart about and pounce on each other. We have Mama and Grandma nursing them and caring for them which is just so cool. My cats are so loving toward one another, it's weird.

Anyhoo, congrats on your new friend and I love the name! ;)

24. I hate that people throw their pets away like garbage
Abbott was a dumpster cat that I rescued. He is the most amazing, adoring and loving pet that anyone could own - how someone could toss him out with the garbage is beyond me!
