I am deeply and horribly addicted to
craigslist.

It's getting really bad. I am jonesing for everything that is a a good deal. I don't need a couch, but I found an awesome one, i mean, really fucking awesome one, for 600.00. I don't have 600 dollars, I have a couch. But this couch must be worth about 2500 and it is in fantastic condition.

I
WANT
IT.

I
WANT
THE
DEAL.

what the hell is wrong with me? I check the free listings every single day now, and get irritated if new stuff isn't posted.

I have gotten some good stuff, really cheap, and needed those things...but it's getting out of hand. I need rehab.

3. just to see how the other half live!
i do though, you are correct. I find the really curt ones hilarious. I found a guy for a friend of mine, but she was too chicken shit to email him.

also on my list of CL regular visits is 'best of', I hit that once a month.

I hit free EVERY DAY, MULTIPLE TIMES A DAY.
it would help if the SF bay area free section wasn't so damn active. same with sacramento's.

and some of it is hilarious

why is it so hard for guys to understand that women don't answer to things like "looking for a slut"? do they think that actually works?

I have to, since I don't have the money or the room for it, but I am in deep love with it. oh, and they are asking 900 for it! OMG. I love it. hope the link works, use bugmenot if it doesn't.

4. Oh, man, don't ever start going to estate sales.
They're like garage sales on steroids, and they are dangerous. I'm going out, like, every weekend, and I come home with some of the weirdest (but incredibly cheap!) stuff. I cannot resist interesting old stuff, and good deals. I got the coolest four folding chairs for twenty five bucks. Get this, they look like real dining room chairs when they are unfolded. Very retro.

13. I saw a cool radio last weekend and I really wanted to get it,
but the last thing I need is something else to drag home. I'm really bad with books, and -- get this -- typewriters. I don't know why, I just like them.

14. Oh yeah!
When I was a writer, vintage typer were my thing, too. I had an old Smith-Corona a reporter for UPI used in the 40's; I wrote my first 2 books on it. It's an addiction, but a harmless one.

17. I've only got five
One with hungarian diacritical marks! They get unwieldy so I try to restrain myself. And only buy them when they are cheap; sometimes you see the really old ones for upwards of $100.

I have a Victrola too. I was out looking for actual furniture for my house and bought the Victrola instead. I still don't have a proper bed.

I have a rule; nothing over 50 bucks for my radios, unless it's a Zenith Trans-oceanic, which is my Holy Grail:

I lust after one of these; maybe this weekend..

I've got a half-dozen tube radios I've restored; there's a vintage radio place a half-block from where I live that sells tubes and a bunch of parts for (mostly) a good price. It's a great store; it's pure luck I live so close to it..

8. oh dear, I was breastfed on estate sales!
I do a garage sale/estate sale day once a month, and thrifting on a different weekend, and CL all the time. It's an addiction, seriously.

Your chairs sound really cool. I'll give you thirty for them!

It's all about the DEAL, baby! one of my favorite finds thrifting was a stereoscope viewer. I got it for 60.00, and it's value is now up to 95.00. (mint condition and marked by manufacturer, limited run) then I found a bunch of stereoscope cards at a flea market for a dollar. it's really cool to look at them they way they were meant to be looked at.

I also got a teak two seater porch bench, a red wooden coatrack, and a wood quaker chair with leather woven seat for 70.00 at my last garage sale binge. that day my haul was so amazing I actually wrote it all down in my journal, I gushed to anyone who would listen for three days. I got so much shit, it would kill you.

I am sick.

11. Exactly. It's the deal!
I picked up a cool lamp, a toolbox, an old rotary dial phone and a spice rack for ten bucks once. I found a place online where I can buy the adapter kit so I can change out the phone line so it'll work with modern phone lines. Working phones of that style, with the adapter kit, go for like $70!

15. bad ass!
you realize you are just enabling my addiction, right?

I got about 20 sets of knitting needles, a buttload of yarn, and assorted knitting accessories for five bucks at a garage sale once. One set of needles goes for 7-30 bucks these days, depending on the type. and yarn goes from 3-? per ounce usually! If anyone ever wants to send me knitting needles, pm me for my address! (if you find them at a garage sale and they are not bent.) I will pay you back, no lie.

I'm really hoping to score a whole bunch of pots for the garden one of these days. You can never have too many pots.

Get this, my local newspaper has online classifies so you can browse them and only pick out the ones you want. I print out my "hit list" on Friday with the help of google maps. Ha!

30. I'll have to check out CL's "stuff" listings
I've looked by there several times but mostly on rants and raves to see what people are saying. The R&R section's pretty dull, mostly, "Dallas sucks," and "If it sucks so bad leave," level of discourse. If I run across any knitting needles I'll certainly keep you in mind! :)

33. thanks!
hit the 'free' listing in the for sale/wanted section. I'd peruse other areas as well, Austin is pretty active and I have seen some great deals there (best friend lives there, I look for her too, lol)

rants and raves gets really clique-ish, anyone who thinks the lounge does hasn't read the SF bay area CL R&R. nuts i tell you!

the trick on CL free listings is to check often, as stuff goes really fast. - eh. I went and looked, dallas free listings suck. mostly animals (great if you are looking for a pet!) get the word out on your garage sale-ing and maybe it will pick up? ;-)

the interesting thing about these chairs is that I didn't even know such a thing existed. that's always cool, to find something new.

Well, as a platonic friend:)

My wife and I are the same way; we've got the coolest thrift stores here I've ever been to. Most of our clothes and furniture we got from garage sales, estate sales, and thrift stores, and my vintage radio collection (I've got about 50 or so dating from the 30's to the 70's) has all come from one of them.

We're going to a bunch this weekend; I can't wait..

18. right back atcha brother!
I wish my dh liked it as much as I do. he is so not interested. He is the type that just wants to get rid of everything and live a simple life. I want to accumulate and sell, accumulate and sell, and so on and so on...

this is so sad: I counted my pieces in my wardrobe recently and figured out the percentage of used clothes from thrift/garage/estate/etc...

95% used
5% new

(not counting underwears and bathing suits, of course, LOL!)

I have even started buying high end sheets and pillow cases, and cleaning the hell out of them. I have some really high thread count stuff that cost me five bucks or less. I found two down comforters, and a red silk duvet for thirty bucks- TOTAL. (Queen size)

we must stop sharing, I am getting high just reliving all my deals.

I'm checking it 2-3 times a day looking for things I don't need, just because the deals are so cool.

Someone was actually giving away a georgeous antique piano with real ivory keys. They were moving to a smaller place and couldn't take it with them. Unfortunately, someone got there before me. :-(

I keep searching though.
