Welcome to Casa d'Amok (pics)...
Edited on Sun Jun-05-05 07:25 PM by CanuckAmok
I just picked up a cheapie digital camera for work ($25!)... it doesn't take very good photos, but what does one expect for $25?

One caveat is that the viewfinder and the lens seem to have differing views on what fills the frame. I think they really ned to get together on this.

But, technical limitations aside, it's not a terrible little camera. And, when this one get's stolen, I'll only be a fraction of the upset I was when my good one was.

Anyway, I thought I'd try it out around the ol' (new) homestead, and take you lucky DUers on a virtual tour!

So here is the vantage point from the entrance. Note the obligatory Haida artwork over the fireplace. Apparently, there's some sort of bylaw that I either have to own one of these, or a fleece vest. I think I did the right thing.

You'll also notice the RCA dog, "Nipper". I won him in a contest, and he's somewhat of an albatros everytime I move, but I've become quite accustomed to his protective presence.

Millie, who most of you know from my avatar, is sitting on the ottoman, she doesn't move much, because, as you can see, her little legs have been filed to stumps.

And on the wall over the entertainment unit, are four framed LP covers from the 1980s, utilising the Constructivist technique. They are, clockwise from top left:

Deutche Amerikande Freunschafte's first LP

Test Dept. and the Striking Miner's Choir's "Shoulder to Shoulder" LP

Kraftwerk's "The Man Machine" (English cover)

And, lastly, The Pressure Company (aka Cabatet Voltaire)'s Solidarnosc Live in Sheffield 19 Jan 82 EP

Here we have the first view from the mezzanine. That's Millie, again, of course. Apparently with prosthetic legs. And her friend Holly seated on the fold-down sofa on the right. You'll also see my other albatross, aka a whole assload of industrial, new wave, and punk vinyl from dating from 1975 or so through 1990. My collection is mostly comprised of music which frightens even myself. But I can't bring myself to get rid of it, even though I have copied most of the rare LPs onto MP3. The other shelf is full of books, mostly trash novels, Kurt Vonnegut tracts, and violent pornography thinly disguised as German art books (thanks, Taschen!).

Another view from the mezzanine. I don't know where Millie went. Probably for a bite to eat. Notice the red vinyl sofa and ottoman. It's red vinyl because I am a bachelor. I don't expect you chicks to understand, but I know all the DU guys are 100% with me on this one. What you can't see is the occasional table to the left of the vinyl sofa, which was designed by Douglas Coupland. It's not a great table, but anything that keeps him from writing another mopey tome can't be said to serve no purpose.

Welcome to my kitchen! It is countered in snot-green real formica, which was recycled from a diner which was recently demolished. The stools are from the "Princess Marguerite", which was a steamer based in Victoria in the 60s. They came with the condo! The appliances are black, which makes them go faster, and the whole kitchen, which is rather small to begin with, is only 6.5' wide at the far end, due to the triangular shape of this building. It is really convenient being able to wash two opposing walls at the same time.

PS look at all that fucking booze!!!

And here's where all the action** happens. I designed this bed myself! It was a wedding gift to my dear ex-wife, but I managed to get it back. Mmmmm....sleeping soundly on a king-sized mattress of self-righteousness! It's actually a canopy bed, but I took the optional canopy sections off, because they block the pull-down stairs which lead to the roofdeck. Again, I apologise for the odd angle; the bed was nicely framed in the viewfinder.

**(sleeping)

A reverse of the bedroom/mezzanine. The treadmill is off to the left, piled, as usual, with clothes. The pine chest was my grandmother's, and it is currently used to house linen, my fax machine, and a hard-drive for my PC. I can't stand wires and crap everywhere. And, of course, there's more art-porn on the lid (Eric Kroll's "Beauty Parade", and a rare, signed copy of "Helmut Newton's Illustrated". "Dude, what the fuck is wrong with German people?"

And, now, the roof. Lookig southward, we you can see the Canadian Coast Guard Station, the cruise ship terminal (there's never a cruise ship around when you want one in a photo), and, in the distance, the Olympic Mountains of Washington's Olympic Peninsula (Hi, Courtney! Yeah, right, as if she'd wave back.).

Slightly to the East, Downtown Victoria, including the famous Fairmont Empress Hotel, and the infamous home of the Provincial Legislative Assembly. Oh, i didn't take any photos of the roof-deck, oer se, because it's in a bit of a shambles at the moment; I'll be renovating it and widening it in a few months. Right now there's room for my hammock or myself, but not both.

And here's the neighbourhood methamphetamine lab. Really! It has been busted several times, but it manages to keep on keepin' on, somehow. Damn kids with their meth labs and their grafitto tagging and their music and their big chrome rims!

And, finally, a framed postcard from Socks Clinton, which, swear to God, was dead-centre of the viewfinder.

Well, that's all for now, folks! Thanks for visiting... Later this week, I'll be happy to present my worksite, in all it's gravelpitty glory!

on edit: I was going to fix the spelling mistakes, but then I thought "to hell with that!"...

2. Very nice. I like the furniture and the decor.
Not bad at all :).

I've been considering a similarly colored sofa and loveseat for my living room (and eliminating the beige that's in there now).

3. That is one kick-ass condo!
I love your furnishings, but I'm a sucker for modernism. Great couch for showing off those cats. Did they plan it that way? ;-)

BTW, I am extremely jealous of the kitchen. We only have lowly white appliances that perform at subpar speeds and boring wooden barstools.

6. Neat pictures for a cheap camera. And you are a VERY neat housekeeper!
Edited on Sun Jun-05-05 07:29 PM by BrklynLiberal
You also have a really cool place!

BTW:
par·al·lax (păr'ə-lăks')
n.
An apparent change in the direction of an object, caused by a change in observational position that provides a new line of sight.

The difference between what you see in the viewfinder and what the lens catches. When you have SLR camera they are the same, as you see thru the actual lens.

10. I know about the parallax, but this is Marty Feldman-esque distortion!

Of course, that's till preferable to a Cory Feldman-esque distortion.

9. Ah, yes...the turntable.
Edited on Sun Jun-05-05 07:35 PM by CanuckAmok
I used to have a few of them, but I donated my two Technics 1200s to the local co-op station, and I have this cool-assed Mitsubishi vertical TT, but it's so cool-assed it's on the shop-bench awaiting a replacement belt.

Yes, that's a Snoopy from when I was a kid. My mom bought him for me in London. He's been everywhere I've been including two overseas duty tours. I wish you could see that bedside lamp; it's truly hideous. My friend's grandmother bought it as a craft kit in Arizona in the 50s. It's made from dried Sonoma cactus. It used to have two plastic desert blooms, but they're long-gone.

Your place is fantastic!. You really do have a great condo. And such easy access to primo BC crank. :P

That is the kind of set up I want for my place, including the second cat for my sofa. My one cat sleeps on the ottoman

Good job. I'd love to come back when you pimp out your porch.
