I said:

I then resumed walking home.

He calls out some things that are not appropriate for posting on the internets, including the assertion that I need a good, lets say, lay, whether I like it or not.

I turn. I walk up to him. And I upend my whole super-large coke on his head.

I walk home.

I am a mean, awful person.

But it felt good.

I actually got started as a bartender years ago because I almost beat the crap out of a customer when I was cocktail waitressing one night. I had a tray full of drinks and some yahoo reached up and grabbed a handful of my left boob. I let out a scream and dumped the entire tray on his head.

They moved me to bar tending and told me they thought the patrons might be safer with me behind a bar. I think they were probably right, because by the time they got out there to stop me I was backing off and dropping into a combat stance so I could kick the shit out of him if he stood up.

But I used to work as a newspaper police reporter and it's not uncommon for men to physically assault women when they feel they've been rebuffed.

We're not talking about a guy who smiles at you on the street or just tries to pick you up. This is a guy who has already shown he is unable to physically restrain himself (regardless of what the "studies" say).

I wrote a story once where a man grabbed a woman's ass in a San Bernardino nightclub and she threw a drink in his face and then slapped him. He knocked her out and slashed her face. She survived and he got arrested. She will never look the same.

Another time, when I worked in Phoenix, I wrote a story about a 15 year old girl who was sitting in the passenger seat of a car at a traffic light. Four men pulled up next to her. The driver started saying things. She rolled her eyes and looked away. He shot and killed her. They were never caught.

I come from a totally different culture. While thats not to say that it 'never' happens, the instances are so rare that I've heard of maybe one. In every situation I've ever been in where I've had unwanted attention of this sort, I've done SOMETHING about it. Now, it doesn't tend to happen on the street often, at least to me. With this guy, what he said was so vulgar and offensive I just kind of went off. But in every other situation, the person has been forcing attention on me, and I got loud and violent (elbowing, kicking, etc) so that people saw what was going on. The guys always backed off. Same with my friends. I think a lot of it has to do with the society I live in.

Also, to be fair, the studies I'm referring to are generally about situations a lot more dangerous than the one I was describing, or than the ones you are. And by dangerous I mean the people were being attacked physically and felt very unsafe. In those situations, drawing attention and fighting back is always a better option IMO, because one way or another the person is being violent and very abusive, and it's better to try and escape and get help than pacify them.

But the problem is that there are too many officers in relationship with the amount of crime in the city. The crime in the city hasn't risen in proportion with the growing populace. So what happens is that the cops start acting like fascists, because they don't have as much crime to fight compared to other cities of similar size. I once had a middle age man press right up against me (from behind) while we were part of a crowd watching a game at a festival - keep in mind that I was probably 12 years old at the time. I kept moving forward, away from him, because I felt uncomfortable but he kept moving forward up against me as well. I didn't know what to do - I was a young, naive little girl and didn't realize that something like that could happen. I eventually walked away from the game I was watching to permanently get away from him (which did work).

I often think about that situation and wish I had had the smarts to yell "get the fuck away from me you pervert" and getting the police but girls are raised to be polite and friendly and that can really come back to haunt us at times like that.
