Bauhaus Are they the fathers of Goth?
Edited on Tue Oct-28-03 09:33 PM by corarose
I know these guys from England from when they first started out. Mind you I haven't seen them in years and I wouldn't want them to see me right now.

A free Netflix subscription came with this computer and I rented the Bauhaus Concert CD.

Damn they are looking so much older.

What I want to know are they the fathers of Goth?

They were out before the Cure so please don't say that the Cure created the look.

Peter Murphy has the deepest voice that I have ever heard.

1. Bauhaus and The Smiths popularized it
but it could be argued that Lou Reed/VU and the Warhol gang actually "created" the look.
Pale, thin, dressed in black early heroin chic.

3. Bauhaus was out before the Smiths
I went through the original punk rock era and Bauhaus was dressing Goth years ago.

Pete & Danny were into vampires and the look.

2. The look?
Edited on Tue Oct-28-03 09:49 PM by Caution
The look goes to Johnny Cash plain and simple. The original man in black. As for the music, well Siouxsie, Bauhaus, The Sisters of Mercy and the Fields of the Nephilim pretty much cover the entire genre (though if you want to get really esoteric you could throw in Dean Can Dance, The Damned and Christian Death)

Edit to throw in a few other seminal Goth bands:

Alien Sex Fiend
Danielle Dax
Death in June
Mephisto Waltz
Joy Division
The Cure
Sex Gang Children
This Mortal Coil
Southern Death Cult (later The Cult)

5. Siouxsie Sue was out at the same time as Bauhaus
They lived about 1/2 hour from each other and played the same clubs.

Could be a tie between both of them.

Rozz Williams (frontman of the original Christian Death) killed himself not that long ago.

Too great Christian Death albums:

I'm still digging the Sisters of Mercy...F'n A! Check out their new website!

http://www.the-sisters-of-mercy.com/

"This is the official site of The Sisters Of Mercy.

We are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine.
And intellectual love gods in our spare time.

We make records, sometimes.
We play concerts, sometimes.

You're here anyway.

This website contains ninety-seven million words,
which are personal oil and ignorant zealots and the USA is a rogue state.
This website contains five pictures of Isabelle Adjani.

You're welcome."

Roooock ON!

Sure I was drunk at Maxi's in downtown WPD, in 1987(or 1988, 0r 1989...), listening to the Smiths, or Smithereens?, no the Smiths and after dancing with this chick, that looked like Courtney Love, no that "Friends" chick, what's her name, in that Springsteen video, a couple of spinning tracks Ultravox came on I like, you know, I was home next, where's the car man?

I've seen the sisters about 5 times now and have pretty much every single piece of recoding material they have ever released, many in first pressings. Great band and a phenomenal live show. They hit the states every few years but tour yearly in Europe.

If you liek the sisters check out Rosetta Stone and pick up a copy of The Sisterhood's Gift (the Sisterhood is a side project of SOM).

Also some of the original members of SOM went on to form The Mission UK.

I lived in England in the early 80's and the punk rock scene was going strong.

Thanks so much for that link.

The last I heard about my old boyfriend was that he was serving time in Prison in England.

29. I stopped a Punk Rock show one time from laughing so loud
I believe it was X and the guy came out with the top of his pants cut off and they weren't made that way he had literally cut them off and it wasn't a pretty site.

His schlong was falling out and most of his butt crack showed.
He started shoving the microphone in and out of his mouth that he was well you know what I mean. He was very sexual and his outfit made us laugh.
He stopped the show and bent down and said BITCH SHUT THE FUCK UP and by that time I was crying because I was laughing so hard and I was not the only person laughing. When you hear a couple of people laugh your gonna laugh and we had most of the audience keeling over.
The guy walked off the stage and was pissed off. The owner of the club had to bring them back on.

33. A friend of mine owned the club
He was laughing also.

I was standing right next to the stage in my a red polished cotton skin tight jumpsuit and I was drinking champaign so I felt good.
Several of my friends and I were kind of drunk and he couldn't stop us from laughing at him and it broke the whole audience up.
I remember trying to get that jumpsuit off because I had to pee after laughing so hard at him and I had trouble but I got it off in time.
He was putting the mike down his throat so far our eyes came out of our head and then we busted out laughing at his getup and what he was doing.

34. When I was touring with my old boyfriend on the Blizzard Of Oz tour
Steve's band backed Ozzy up.

Well, one night they were playing in PA and Stevie (Malcolm & Angus from AC/DC nephew)had a cold and he couldn't stop his nose from running.

When he went on stage he ran out of Kleenex and there was a security guard messing with the crowd that was by the stage and Stevie sneezed and shot snot all over the guards head.
The guy was a biker with a bald head and a biker jacket on. He was a big and tough bouncer and he waited for Stevie and he was looking for him back stage and everything.
I had to borrow him one of my dresses in order to get him out of that Theater and I am not kidding.

I think Leeds was more instrumental in the rise of Goth.

Arguing about who created what and who did what first and who's more "Goth" is an argument for posers.

Skinny Puppy
The Mission(UK)

39. The Cure's early stuff was far from Goth, I think...
The Cure didn't really get Goth until Pornography. Their 3 Imaginary Boys album was much more of a post-punk affair. By the time Cure got all dark and gothy Bauhaus had been around for a while.

Now in a race between Bauhaus and Joy Division......you may have a case.

47. Joy Division
JD actually started in 77, Bauhaus played their first show on New Years Eve, 1978.

Joy Division really didn't really get Gothish until about 79 with Unknown Pleasures. They were much more punk before that. IIRC, I think Martin Hannett had a lot to do with it.
