Was John right?
"I suppose if I had said television was more popular than Jesus, I would have gotten away with it. I'm sorry I opened my mouth. I'm not anti-God, anti-Christ, or anti-religion. I wasn't knocking it or putting it down. I was just saying it as a fact and it's true more for England than here. I'm not saying that we're better or greater, or comparing us with Jesus Christ as a person or God as a thing or whatever it is. I just said what I said and it was wrong. Or it was taken wrong. And now it's all this."

1. He was right in saying that he shouldn't have said that.
Even though he didn't mean any offense.

4. I thought that people should see it as

an indictment of the public's shallowness instead of as an attack on Christianity.

But most chose to shoot the messenger who was only telling them that celebrity had become a ridiulous form of exaltation. In fact, as I remember it, Mark David Chapman said he shot and killed John because of that statement.

5. Yeah, I don't think he meant it as an attack on Christianity
And it may be just as you say.

2. One of the many things I like about John was that he didn't say --
-- things that were easily summarized or capsulized into little bite-sized bits for tv entertainment.

He was certainly a very evolved human being and his original quotation about Jesus was correct.

He wrote some mighty fine songs, too.

3. I think he meant the medium is the message imo
I could be dead wrong but that's my take on it.
The media hype around the Beatles was insane.
