I bought The Aviator yesterday, and was charged two dollars more for the widescreen version.

Is that the norm?

1. No
Both versions are always the same price around here.

Then again, I guess fullscreen versions should be cheaper, since you're getting less of the movie.

5. I never so much as glance at full-screen movies
So I don't know what the prices for those are usually like.

I wasn't as much into the movie as I liked the story, which is true. I spent today at work googling up this dude, he was definitely a piece of work.

14. The History Channel did a special on him
"piece of work" is an understatement :D

He actually crashed a couple planes, and walked away. He definitely lived on the edge.

8. Sometimes but not very often
It can even happen later in the release cycle that a widescreen version will be more money than the fullscreen. It depends on what the studio charges the outlet for the different versions as well as the number that the outlet purchases of each. Some releases are just more money than others. Was it anamorphic widescreen? That could be a reason for the higher price.

11. Look at the back of the dvd.
If it says anamorphic widescreen then it has a smaller ratio of letter box and will appear to fill more of the screen on a regular tv than a regular widescreen movie will.

It's a way for the studios to cater to all the different sizes and shapes of tv screens currently on the market. It is the newest technology for dvds. Should allow the picture quality to be consistant whether viewed on a portable dvd player or a 50 in projection screen.

15. You're welcome
Then you will LOVE this new technology. It will feel more like the real theater experience even on a smaller tv. Enjoy! :)
