So what would YOU do if your parents were about to move in with you?
Edited on Thu May-26-05 03:59 PM by crispini
Because mine are. Ok, well, they're really not about to move in with me right away.

But they might.

Because my dad is retired from an airline and his pension is about to go the way of the United Airlines pension plan (sent to Pension Benefit Guaranty, i.e. federalized, and then cut in half) unless this act gets passed.

So won't you PLEASE PLEASE sign this petition?

http://www.ipetitions.com/campaigns/Pension_Act/

If you want lots of details about what you are signing, here they are:

First, here is Delta's press release on the subject:
Delta Retirees Support Employee Pension Preservation Act of 2005
http://news.delta.com/print_doc.cfm?article_id=9717
To read the text of the bill you can go to Thomas:
http://thomas.loc.gov /and search on S.861 (can't direct link to text at Thomas site for some reason.)
Here is a PDF "fact sheet summary" by the author of the bill (Johnny Isakson R-GA)http://isakson.senate.gov/press/2005/042005airlinepensionfactsheet.pdf

Anyway, ya'll, I know the bill is sponsored by a Republican but from what I can determine it's a good bill and the retirees and the pilot's union all support it so I am asking ya'll to support it as well.

So help me out! Sign and kick! Kick and sign!

Mom and Dad don't want to live with me either! :P

1. No amount of help will make it any better.
All I can say is that I am sorry. Truly!

2. I'm dreading it, truly I am.
I am sending this petition to everyone I know and I just wish I could get a few more DU'ers to sign. I only got 5 posts in GD.... sigh.... but I MUST.KEEP.TRYING.

It would be truly unbearable. My mom's OK, but my dad's a total pack rat.

4. Try rewording the heading to "What would you do if YOUR parents were
moving in with you?" It might strike home with more people.

6. Yeah, it's not my petition.
It's actually sponsored by some of the stews. Sorry, flight attendants. My dad's years as a pilot rubbed off on me. :P

10. That's OK
when I hear about the pension problems I remember years ago when the dotcom thing was big, business tried to get legislation that would allow them to use that money themselves.
Wonder if some of the pension money was in fact misued!?!?!

11. What would I do? Make room for them.
I have lived with my parents as an adult before; I wouldn't mind them living with me.

They wouldn't WANT to, of course, but it's nothing against me. Like most people, they prefer their own space.

I'm sorry your dad's pension is in jeopardy. That's just so wrong.

13. My family is old school Italian...
I'd consider it status quo. I lived with my parents until I was 27. Even after I was married I lived there for a year. And if I didn't have a great job/school here, I'd still be living there. :)
But, I am sorry to hear about your father. That is terrible!
